To put the ransom money amount in perspective, $500,000 in 1971 is now in 2022 worth approximately $5,800,000.00.
Imagine if it was Alan Joyce back then....he'd have let plane blow up...he hates his staff and his customers
my old man used to own the 67 camaro that was purchased with bomb hoax money
The crime was inspired by the plot of a 1966 American made-for-TV movie called "Doomsday Flight", written by Twilight Zone creator,Rod Serling and starring Jack Lord. Peter Macari had watched the film on ABC-TV whilst on holiday in Townsville, QLD in early 1971.
He'd have nowhere to keep the money? What's wrong with a hole in the garden? Id have it hidden all over the place!
So ... in July, 2020, how much, if any, of the money is still missing ... ?
The '86 movie Call Me Mr Brown is about this, seems quite accurate.
He wasn't shy about it either as he was also spotted driving around Kings Cross in a brand new E Type
I remember Pete Macari, he was my friend
He wore dark rimmed specs , that's narrowing it down a bit then .
12:39 Is that Mal Leyland at the auction?
I thought that too, it really looks like him.
Every other reporter has dark rimed glasses, lol
$337,211.16!? on $500,000?? thats 67% tax!!
16:40 Cops sitting around counting money , they were good at that back in the 70's
Yep especially this Sydney coppers
Yep and I bet they were stoked counting the other $224k for themselves.
LOL! I couldn't get over the dummy which was dressed up to look like 'Mr. Brown' (based on three eye-witness accounts - that ended up looking very little like Macari - the offender), bore a strange resemblance, to me, to the Seekers' singer, Athol Guy! I THOUGHT he (it) reminded me of somebody and I only just twigged right now :-O .
.
PS - DEFINITELY no insinuations, Athol - just coincidentally sayin' ...
Macari used an accomplice in the crime. This man collected the suitcases with the money from Qantas Headquarters in the rental van. He wore a false beard. This was the man in the witness descriptions. He was first to be arrested after the owner of his local petrol garage in Bondi reported him to Police. The man, whom the garage guy knew was a Barman had turned up at the garage driving his THIRD brand-new car. The garage guy though spmething a bit suss and did not believe his story of being left the money by a rich Aunt.
15:28 Mike Carlton?
dark rimmed spectacles? hmmm...
almost sounds like the original Thomas Crown affair
G'day "Mr. Brown". How's the shop? ;-)
Great Story!, "I'm Livin' in the 70's" hahaha
I guess im asking randomly but does someone know a method to log back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot the login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Bishop Karson instablaster =)
@09:08 minutes, To me it appears Bruce Lyall, the Foreign Exchange Officer, seems to fit the description of the hoax bomber. :)
So was he ever caught?
@Rehan Zainul Abdeen figures
It said in the video that he served a 15 year sentence
No never
yeah 2 months with Mr Brown in the late 80's (2out). To my grave
What a couple of handsome studs.
