This is behind the counter of a local family owned Japanese Teishoku " Set Meal" restaurant called Shokudo Morikawa. Nestled within walking distance from Tokyo University, the oldest university in Japan, it’s been a staple nourishment for students for more than 120 years. The shop originally started selling bento boxes on the University campus distributing them with a carrying pole aka milkmaid’s yoke, and later grew into a Teishoku restaurant meaning it serves Japanese set meals, where all of the dishes in the course are served together often consisting of a main dish, rice, soup and sides. Today, the shop serves not only Japanese school students food, but also locals and salarymen alike all lining up to enjoy their delectable and affordable set meals. If you are search where to eat in Tokyo or what to do in Tokyo, this hidden gem would be a great place to eat lunch.

Paolo that hot sauce is hot 🥵!!! Finally got my bottle a few weeks ago just tried it for the first time yesterday 👍👍👍
Is your sauce is sold at the fish market in Tokyo?
Paolo - Hoping that you are planning to make a lighter version for us wimps who can't handle the heat ! Would love to try a hot sauce with your umami flavor. Thanks for the great vids, you make me feel like I am in the restaurant/shop/location with you. All the best!
Love your hot sauce. Finished one bottle and got 2 more!
Im excited to try. My boss is coming back from paternerty leave and he LOOOOOVEES hot sauce so i cant wait for him to try it
I am the man interviewed in the video. Sushi and tempura are great, but I hope you also enjoy the local "Teishoku" culture when you come to Japan!
Wow , It's actually you, kudos for getting featured in this video.
just want to say you're handsome lol
Fantastic service and food ~ thank you for sharing your story
Kudos on your food and craft 😊
The food looks great, I'd love to be able to try it!
I still wanna see a day in Paolo's life and how he makes these videos. Always wondered how he does some of these clips we see
This is "A daily life of Filipino Vlogger living in Japan" video
correct me if im wrong
And how all these people put up with him being in their bedrooms filming when they wake up
@@shysenpai4730Im not sure if he’s already made a video about it but his content and the way he does the videos have definitely changed and I want to see a video about that, if its not too much to ask for.
@@chrisgironde6669 I always wondered about the shots where we see the topic person riding the subway, and in the next shot Paolo is on the station saying "he/she should be arriving here soon"
That would be very interesting
Oh Paolo, I went to this restaurant frequently when I was university student, it was almost 30 years ago! This was called "Mori-shoku" among students and was VERY popular at that time also. I'm living in Kobe now so your video brings back memories of my good old days. Thank you so much!
I just moved to Kobe recently! are there any restaurants you recommend checking out?
Welcome to Kobe. I don't eat out now so my information is limited unfortunately. But I know "Yo-shoku Asahi" is popular Mori-shoku-like restaurant. Yakiniku (Japanese style beef grill) restaurant "Mangetsu" is also popular. I know these because I use to live in Hanakuma area. I hope you enjoy your life in kobe. @henby_
I love seeing comments like this! Thank you for sharing your personal experiences 😊

It would be such a shame if a place like this, with such a long history, would have to shut down...
I hope he does find someone who would take it over!
The younger daughter’s husband
@@aznantboi correct, traditionally this is the only way. Because in Japan traditionally only men can inherit the family business, if you have only daughters then you do what's called mukuyoshi (adopting a son in law).
@@loulou3676typical bigoted Japan
I think if they want to save the place, tradition is the last thing they'll consider when choosing a candidate.
@@unoriginalname3442 stop watching japanese videos if you hate them so much loser
What a great family establishment! Such a shame to think it might close one day. Such a humble loving man the owner is.
That was hard to hear, the owner is 4th generation and they’ve kept the business going for 120 years. I hope someone will keep it going for the next generation.
@@ajclements4627 completely agree!!
It's obviously incredibly hard work.
@@RenegadeRanga exactly! And the younger generation is afraid of hard work.
@@RamblingVlogger not rly, but we do believe in a fair compensation. so why do u think that we are scared of work, when in fact u bommers are just to afraid to speak up against your bosses whilst being used as modern day slaves
Can we just stop and appreciate Paolo and Maiko for getting up so early to film this especially with them having young Wolfie to look after
Zero dss
40 years of dedication. Impressive. May he have many more years of success.
Paolo casually dropping words like "No cap" and "aight bet" just catches me off-guard every time, I love it!
It also stands out for me, but I think it sounds out of place and contrived. Maybe he's trying to appeal to a younger audience? I don't think Paolo is much younger than me if at all, so it seems weird because my peers don't use gen Z slang but their kids might.
@@arthursciencehonestly this is like 2018-2019 slabs I know when I was in high school this one guy always said “no cap”, “aight bet is like middle school honestly
@@arthurscience it doesn't sound contrived. You're just not used to it
Paolo, I have greatly enjoyed, not only this story, but the way you blend documentary style with casual interview. I'm sure you put your guest at ease; and the comfortable vibe serves to draw us into the narrative. Thanks for this video, I enjoyed it. Would love to drop in for a meal the next time I'm in Japan.
i love how the young student, who works there, seemed shy at first and then lit up when Paolo asked her what her favorite dish was.
I love that they sit down and eat together at the end 🥹 one of the few jobs where "we're one big family" isn't a lie or a red flag!
Paolo, love your videos.
Im a landscaper here in the US, and I admire the Japanese clean landscaping and tree work. Would love to see a day in the life of either a Japanese landscaper or arborist.
I second this idea!! An architect/landscape architect (which in Japan seems to be combined often) would be great!!
Oooh yes! Great jdea!
The power failure literally gave me a heart-attack. I could feel his tension and worry.
I've been cooking for years, and as a bit of a hermit who still values socialization, I would gladly take over a business like this. Sad that it has to go but what it ride it must have been.
If given the chance to stay in japan, why not?
College kids in Japan are lucky! That food looks so delicious and nutritious unlike the fast food on offer around the university I went to in the states. Thanks for the fun video!
One thing that I learnt from your video and the people on the video is that YOU SHOULD LOVE YOUR JOB. Every job is tiring but if you love it, you enjoy it, the job will be not that hard, the job will be fun. The appreciation comes from others but if we are grateful for that appreciation, we will work even more to maintain our legacy. Thank you for this video, Paolo. I will register myself not to give up and enjoy every moment.
I was a chef for 14 years. I think i sat with my chef and co workers maybe once or twice in all those years for a meal. Its so crazy to see kitchen culture in Japan and how different it is from here. Breaks my heart to see his business not being taken over by the next generation as it has propspered for so long. If i knew the language id drop everything to help that man. Great video as always Paolo
Paolo. Can I just say how much I appreciate the ‘day in the life’ series - must take so much time to get permissions and plan - but always so incredibly interesting and inspiring
Also this is just round the corner from my in-laws home, am in Japan next month so who knows maybe I’ll stop by here
One of my friends lives in Japan and her daughter is a university student at Tokyo University. She always talks about the food being good so I told her about your video. She quite enjoyed seeing behind the counter with her daughter since she went to school here back in the early 2000s. 😊
And 44 years is so long. A congrats to both on a successful marriage.
Brings back memories. I remember visiting this university and this rerstaurant.
Aw yeah, going behind the counter is always a great time; seeing the behind the scenes is surprisingly always cozy, even in spite of how busy it gets 🥰
Honestly, I think I say this on most of these videos. The work ethic is on another level! Just impressive. Thanks for sharing...
The sudden urge to move countries and learn a whole new language and cooking style. 😂 I would love love love this place. The simple joy of providing beautiful nutritional meals. ❤🎉

Just got back from a week in Tokyo and Kyoto. It's amazing how easy it is to eat delicious and healthy meals so inexpensively there! No matter where we went we'd find fantastic meals and it rarely cost more than 5-10k Yen to feed the 4 of us, even with drinks
I really felt their passion and love. What a great episode.
Wow! A student studying medicine and a future doctor, working as a server. I love it!
This is one thing I envy about Japan, I wish the USA had healthy and delicious food options available to us made by hand from someone who puts love into their food!
When a new video drops, I instantly smile because I know I'm about to enjoy my next 15-20 min guaranteed! 😊
I would also like to see a day in the life of Paolo. I do really appreciate everything you make and create, you have shown me a side of Japanese living and culture I've always been interested in! ❤❤
Me too!
I love this restaurant and the video for its originality and care of heart. Also the owner is realy what every people could look up to, As there are very less people like him. love him and wish for his great life. May my god bless him a grand son as his heir 🙏.
Paolo, I LOVE every video you release but the "Behind the Counter" episodes, just hit something in me that gets me excited and anxious to watch!
Long live that restaurant owner & very best to his family and the business ❤

Saturday? Are you from the future? Jk, jk.
I'm from the UK and I LOVE watching all the hard work and the amazing food these family restaurants create. Really amazing... I hope to visit Japan one day soon :)
I'm almost 1/3 of the way thru my hot sauce. This week, I mixed it with mayo for epic fish tacos. I hope Paulo does an episode on all the ways to use the hot sauce... Japanese dishes and others!
Paid actor right here. Nice try, Paolo.
@janetjin4164 I wish! Paolo, if you want to pay me, I am open to it, lol. I just want to know what Paolo actually puts this death sauce on since I can only use a few drops on anything without giving myself hiccups.
I love this video!!! That restaurant owner was so cool!! Man you can just feel his energy through the video!! The food looked so delicious!! It was wonderful to see everyone work so well together.
I m very fond of this series. Everytime i watch these people working i get motivated and charged up. How humble & enthusiast these people are!! They all love their job to their bones.
Just got back from my first trip to Japan and it is amazing how many local food shops are everywhere. It is crazy how much easier and more affordable it is to eat healthy in Japan compared to North America.
Also, was pretty excited when I went to Tsukiji Fish Market to get myself a bottle of Paolos Premium Kaminari Hot Sauce. Tastes really good and has a good amount of heat. Kind of funny that the hot sauce was the one thing I wanted to really take home from the trip.
Weekly reminder that Paulo’s hot sauce is amazing. It’s hot AF, but extremely savoury and delicious. 1-2 drops goes a long way.
It’s a daily item for me
Paid actor here. Nice try, Paolo.

I live far from Japan (I'm in Central Europe) but in a sense, this place reminds me of the cafeteria at my late mother's workplace where I'd sometimes go eat lunch with the vouches she gave me.
I love how they are using Korean Gotchjung
I LOVE how well they treat their employees in Japan's restaurants ! The fact that they feed them daily for FREE is incredibly generous !! MOST restaurants in North America will charge a fee for meals with a slight discount and place multiple conditions in what you can and can't order. This is especially true in chain restaurants.
The restaurants should feed its own peopleat while at work. It doesn't make sense to be in food business with hungry people running eat.
Another brilliant video in this fantastic series of ‘Behind The Counter’. I love how the pride of the owner and all the workers shows throughout and the food looks so delicious. Thank you for sharing this excellent insight Paolo, best wishes to you, Maiko and Wolfy
I know this is a business / food content but I love it when he tell story about his marriage life 😁 Agree , having a common hobby is a secret for a happy and long marriage 👍
The energy in this video is wonderful and contagious. Thanks for this video Paolo! Looking forward to my return trip to Japan thanks to binge watching all the older videos from two years ago and beyond!
Thank you Paolo and Maiko for giving us a weekly upload of your videos. Seeing how Japanese people works very hard , it made me realize how I should work best in my work. I'm fond of Seiyuus, and hope there is a day in their life.
