  • Built over three stages between 1914 and 1931, Montreal's Sun Life Building was the Commonwealth's largest building for nearly three decades (by square footage). During World War II, the building was part of a secret operation when Winston Churchill devised a plan to ship British wealth to the safety of Canada. $5 billion in gold reserves and negotiable foreign securities were shipped to its vaults, making it the largest movement of wealth in history. The building remains an icon in downtown Montreal and brilliant example of neo-classical architecture.

As a Montrealer, i’m very proud to say that the Sun Life Building is one of my all time favorites, along with Place Ville Marie, as well. Thank you. Johnny, Montréal, Canada 🇨🇦

Some of the narration was lifted from a documentary that featured background music that was impossible to completely silence, my apologies. I've added subtitles during the most difficult part to understand, just make sure to click CC!

Love the video but it was hard to pay attention over the two music tracks

Really lovely video and needs some sound editing. Lots of scenes where multiple music tracks overlap.
Such an incredible location inside and out. I consider myself very fortunate to have worked in this building.

Music over shadows the dialogue. The dialogue is the reason we view this interesting channel

Montreal is full of beautiful buildings with so many different styles and was mainly built during the commonwealth golden era (spared no expense). It's unique in the world in my view. This building is still incredibly prestigious even almost 100 years later. I worked there and nothing has ever compared in prestige and luxury since then.

Many years ago growing up in New York I got to be familiar with the Sun Life Building in Montreal. Why? Because I was a hockey fan and that’s where the head offices of the NHL were located and every year, before the start of the NHL season, I would send a postcard to the NHL at the Sun Life Building in Montreal to ask for an official schedule of games. The league used to put out a nice booklet with the schedule and a summary of the previous season’s stats and they’d send it to you-Free of charge!

    Not bad.
You failed to mention that it offered its clients and pedestrians the first paved (granite slabs) sidewalks in the city.
The original setting for the Regional Service Centre, now used by Banque National, was a masterpiece that
presented c. 28 types/hues of marble and many brass features; surely historical pictures from 35 yrs ago can be located
and presented. The restauration (cleaning) of the exterior of the building in the 1970s took years, and, introduced electric wires
as a means of keeping pigeons (et al) at bay by preventing them from perching/nesting on the building, as a nesting pair
of peregrine falcons famously did (check issues Natl Geo. from the 1940s-50s) feeding on the then too numerous pigeons.
This contributed in no small measure to the reduction in the pigeon population in the sector (as older Montrealer's will attest to).
These preservation measures were followed by major renovations during the late 1980s into the 90s; to the interior common areas as well
as some important tech upgrades, and I would be remiss for omitting mentioning the construction of interior parking (quite a challenge).
Historically, the building was host to most of the major banners (ergo: NHL) for many decades whilst Montreal was the Metropolis of Canada
(prior to the rise of separatism in Quebec). The election of the Parti Québécois Govt. in Nov. of 1976, prompted the company to request its
policy holders allow it to relocate its World HQ, from Montreal to Toronto. The experience of having its business/assets nationalized
in the past (i.e.: South America, South Africa), was enough of a concern to announce the move in 1978.
It used to display (in the main lobby) the largest, most stupendous natural Christmas tree in the city for decades, until a short-circuit caused a flash fire
(? late1960s or early 70s ?) doing considerable damage to the area. Pictures of the building with the R-100 above it, G-Britain's largest dirigible/zeplin, dating from
the 1930s was widely circulated throughout the Empire for propaganda purposes. So much history is tied to this building, the wonderful carillon that livens
up many a picknick in Dorchester/Dominion Squares at lunch time (several times a day actually), a gift to Expo-67, was re-installed atop the building at its close, etc.

My mother worked here, this was the last place she ever worked a job until my parents married in 1953. She never worked anywhere else, since women back then were expected to stay home and take care of the family, which she dutifully did.

Constructive feedback, the music volume is too loud and confusing, seems like there's 2 song playing at the same time.

The Royal York opened in 1929 at 120m, while Sun Life Montreal opened in 1931 at 122m, and Bank of Commerce building in Toronto opened in 1931 at 145m. Sun Life is pretty bulky though, so it's bigger in that way.

Actually, it used to be Dominion Square, the name was changed when they renamed Dorchester blvd. to René Lévesque.
Mayor Jean Doré did that following Lévesque passing.

Tartarian Empire ruins. Early Canadians was barely able to build log cabins and out-houses... No way this was build by early folks with horses, priests and indians! Roll my eyes
