Montreal's Expo 67 Was A Landmark Moment in Canadian History
Completed in a record four years on artificially-built islands in the middle of the Saint Lawrence River, Expo 67 was a Category One World's Fair and the main celebration of the centenary of Canadian confederation in 1967. The scale and ambition of the project forever changed Canada, as well as the perception of Canada by foreign countries. With over 50 million visitors, the fair broke all previous attendance records and would prove to be the most successful World’s Fair of the 20th century. Still considered to this day the largest cultural event ever held in North America, Expo 67 firmly established Montreal as an international world-class city and remains etched in the memory of all those who visited.

The question still remains "where are they gonna play?" PEEL BASSIN - This was supposed to be the proposed site for a possible downtown stadium had the Montreal - Tampa Bay shared project occured. However after that project fell through the land for the proposed stadium is NO LONGER AVAILABLE. The City of Montreal has approved the project that will turn Peel Bassin into a residential, commercial and industrial site. Construction is set to begin within the next few months. Also the train station (REM) that was supposed to be constructed had the baseball stadium seen the light of day has been scrapped. OLYMPIC STADIUM - Well you can forget Olympic Stadium for the two following reasons : 1. MLB Commissionner Rob Manfred has stated on many occasions that if ever MLB was to return to Montreal it would be via a downtown stadium and NOT Olympic Stadium. 2. The Olympic Stadium is OFFICIALLY closed until at least 2028 as the stadium is undergoing renovations where a new roof (not retractable) and technical ring to support the new roof will be installed at a cost of $750 million (CAN). No other major changes are set for those renovations such as seating, sound, lighting, etc. The Olympic Stadium will just stay as it is. So this still leaves the question...WHERE ARE THEY GONNA PLAY? The suburbs (North and South) ? Many baseball fans in Montreal wanted ONLY a downtown stadium...PERIOD! Any stadium at the East of West End of the city is a no go. And besides there is no land available on the city itself. So this leaves the suburbs. There too (suburbs) there is NO land available because the land is PROTECTED by the Quebec Government Agriculture and Wetlands Protection Act of 1978. And the Government has NO plans to change the Law (Act).

Montrealer here, born way after 1967. It's wild, but Expo 1967 lives on. I've been hearing about it my whole life, and its remnants are everywhere, notably the artificial islands created for it and the Montreal Metro completed in time for the expo. Today, the metro is one of the crown jewels of the city. The city has been a huge cultural hub ever since, despite all the fiascos around language laws and corruption and bad planning (looking at you Big O).
