- In this video: A few people have requested a demo of the adjustable bending fork and jig setup I created back in March if this year... What prompted this video now was probably the rudest comment I have ever gotten on CZcams. Stick around, I want to show you my method for dealing with less than friendly people who comment on your channel... Its gonna be fun and gratifying

Sir, I take exception with your primus that you can't screw this up, and this is why. I am a retired Marine Chief Warrant officer. I sent 15 Marines to set up tents. I provided stakes, sledgehammers, safety caps for the stakes, tape measures, and of course tents and ropes. About 2 hours into the job a Corporal returned two of the sledgehammers. The Marines broke the hammers, not the handles, the hammer heads! How does one brake a sledgehammer? You give them to Marines and then let them get bored, then they make a game out of trying to hit the hammer heads together while swinging them like bats. I can only imagine what the Afghan soldiers were thinking watching this. I am impressed with you jig, I have been thinking about how to build a jig and your concept is perfect. I really like that it is very flexible. Thank you for sharing your design.

Yes you are right. I am over 70 but when I was doing my apprendiship, one of the many warnings given by the instructors NEVER EVER HIT A HAMMER WITH ANOTHER HAMMER. Or anything hardened for that matter. They will fracture. Never had a problem in my working life, listened to the old timers and stuck to it. regards and MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR
Abby Babby totally agree. 25 yrs Irish D.F. Only thing soldier proof is a length of railway track, too heavy to lift, they can't bend them, and no good for anything unless you have a couple of hundred of them. Having said all that they still might f##k it up

Man!! that's a bloody brilliant idea to use sockets!! I was thinking the other day "wish I had a lathe, so I can turn different size mandrils", and blow me down, I saw your video on sockets that are just perfect. Works for cold wire bending too.
dav snow I am not a blacksmith or even a welder but I do a lot of woodworking soon as I saw the dirtysmith design jig I said I could use a socket
Jeffrey, The response to the critic was well done and displayed the roots of your character...in this community you're a good neighbor. Though I've never served in the armed forces, I am often been heard to say, 'improvise, overcome, adapt' which in this video you provided more than one example. Its not always about doing, sometimes its about doing - without. Seeing the center punch used to find the center-line on the round stock is an example of why I enjoy watching CZcams.

No matter what you say or do, there always will be those back-chair nit picking individual who's best efforts are spent knocking down others so they can feel good in their own mind. Mr P. probably never step in a workshop much less lifting a hammer so I recommend what my youtube acquaintance does. He totally ignores those comments and blocks the persons. End of story.
As I said before, you're the best and most concise, right to the point person I follow on youtube. Your work is fantastic, it relates to the common person not the expert and it is explained in layman's terms not scientific mumbo jumbo. Keep up what you're doing and soon you will cross that 10k barrier and from then on the sky is the limit.
Thanks for the great jig! I made one the day after I saw your first video and used it on next project. Ended up making another for to allow two simultaneous setups. I made a third for a friend, only used three 1/2" squares. I ground two to round above the drilled holes, so ends up the same function as rounds, but have perfect alignment in a vice. I also leave all in place, just flip the unused one over so it is out of the way, but helps to provide more even pressure across the vice jaws. Great tool and eliminates a bunch of non-adjustable ones of various fixed sizes. THANK YOU!

Your life, live the way you grew up wanting to, Certain (major events) will change your path in life, and bad comments on CZcams is not even remotely going to touch the surface ,they are meaningless,
Most people who make bad comments usually would not bother if they seen you face to face, not because they are scared its because its not worth there time and effort ,
but when sitting at home they feel they have the time to have a go. just think of road rage, most of us would never get that angry if we were shopping in a busy crowded shopping area where were all pushing through to get where we need to get, most of us would apologise we don`t shout obscenities at each other ,But in a car you usually say something in anger and drive on,
My point is when humans have to much time on there hands they like to moan about others ,
And youtubers like your self put your selves out there as a target. for people to criticize or to be praise.
Don`t be a youtuber if bad comments get to you personally its not worth the headache

Hello, this is the first time i come across your channel. The youtube community is a wealth of good info, and some not so good. I have created videos on youtube for many years now, and i have read thousands of comments toward my vids, 90% good. There are always people that need a hug and have nothing good to say, i have deleted the comments and moved on, but it does annoy a person. I know exactly what you mean, i delete the comment and move on, since my channel is about helping the outdoor folks, enjoy the outdoors and stay safe doing so. :) I have used two bolts in a vice to use as a jig. I like the idea of the square stock for accepting a socket to get the size of bend you wish. I will be making one of these up for sure. Thanks for the info and video. ATB.

just be fore you presented you version of this jig, i made one similar but less adjustable. i found the one I made the sockets were too loose. my fix for this was to drill and tap the square side on the end, with a 1/4-20 bolt and a washer to hold the socket in place. this made it work better for me.. thank you for your ideas i hope i helped anyone that had my issue. keep having fun !

Nice demonstration Jeff. Especially the advice on the uneven vice jaws. As for Mr. P, don't let someone like that get you down. Some people couldn't pour water out of a boot if the instructions were on the sole. Just keep the videos coming. We really enjoy them. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

I watched the other video the other day today I went to buy the 1/2 stock but could not find it So I got 1/2 key stock,, I am 72 and trying to keep busy, I can see how helpful the jig will be , I am learning So I say A hugh thanks keep up the good work it1s very helpful to those of us who are just trying to learn and keep busy and out of the rocking chair,,

Jeffrey that jig is diabolical in its simplicity, and the tips on how to deal with a set of jaws that are slightly out are brilliant.
Thanks Jeffrey, I search for some time now a simple ideea that doesn`t involve welding and this is by far the easiest and budget friendly. I've just spared 110euros so now I can buy my drill press!

Hi Jeffrey, I've been blacksmithing for 5 minutes only got my anvil yesterday I needed to figure out how to bend/ curve metal, so as you do, I searched you tube and came upon your genius jig, I'm a barber not an engineer with no experience of metal craft and I instantly understood how your jig works and am going to make one next week. Great video great advice. Ignore the Mr P's of this world unfortunately there is plenty of them around, moaners and wingers are not worth expanding energy on. Hi Jeff, great tutorial and projects. You are on of the best “teachers” on CZcams (I’ve made similar comments on your channel in the past. As hard as it is, ignore the over the top nasty comments- they are neither a part of the human civility that should be present between any two people, but are completely non helpful and ignorant. There are certainly negative comments that we all can learn from- and in this light , we should remember that some are less able to express themselves in the spoken or written word in general and also that there are inherent problems in expressing things by email that are not present when interacting directly. Sorry for the rambling but know that you are a valued mentor to the vast vast majority of folks that look at this channel. Your jig is awesome - I can't wait to try it out. And thank you for the vise advice - I have that problem with one of my vises and it drives me crazy.
That's a neat jig. I've seen something like that...too many videos, too many sources...but not on a rod to make it adjustable. Nicely done. The vise-jaw "problem" is pretty minor, the jig has value. The square peg to accommodate sockets of various sizes looks super handy. Anybody hating on that is out of touch. You don't have a slimy, sales-y, schmucky presentation; this came across as genuine so I'm baffled why anyone would try to "take you to task" over not having shown it working at some time in the past. Anyway, haters are going to hate. Let's not feed the trolls any more than we have already.

I know this video is over a year old. I just wanted to say great idea my grandad had a 1/4 inch hand made safety pin with all sizes of pins on it, both round and square. He used them in his post vise in a similar manner as you. He never took them off the pin he just let them hang off the end outside the vise also with all three pins between the jaws of the vise it kept even pressure on the vise jaws. He would turn the third pin not in use upside down and moved it to the far side of the vise to keep even pressure on the vise jaws. Keep on keeping on!

I don't mean to bring this back. Nice job standing up for yourself. a huge part of this craft is trouble shooting. "Can't blame others for your inabilities." I tried this jig idea before seeing your vid. It was wobbly. The trick is your bar going trough. I to can't believe how simple and effective it is. In fact I'm going to share it with our blacksmith club tomorrow. nice work.
I can apreciate your desire to stay positive. It is a practice I try to employ myself. One thing I try to keep in mind is most of the people that leave derogatory comments dont do squat. They dont do, know and havent ever done squat other than leave negative comments due to their own short comings in life. Most of the time if you go to their channel they have no content or its a bunch of likes on vids for gaming, burn outs or fails. Emphasis on fail because they are failures and it makes them feel better by slandering others. Stay positive bud, oh and I subbed you prob wont see it as Im set on private.

Anyone who has a channel is going to run into this one way or another. I'm in the design/advertising field and man, do I need a thick skin. I don't mind criticism as long as its creative. Crappy comments do affect me and it's hard not to take it personally. I either kill them with kindness or ignore. Good job on staying positive. Dig the jig and I think I even posted that on the video when it first came out.

I like the demonstration. I saw the first video a couple of days ago and wondered about how you had oriented the sockets (I haven't had time to make and try one yet). The way you did it in this video was the same way I thought it should sit in the jig.

Jeff, there are so many negative people on CZcams it is amazing. I love your videos, and trust you implicitly. If you had not already tried it and KNEW it worked, you would say "I have not tried this yet..." Brother, you are a solid citizen. DO NOT let any jerked chase you off CZcams. I don't even have a forge (yet) but I have a ton of remodel experience and tools. This is a hobby I might take up when I retire. All men love knives, guns, FIRE, big booms and half dressed females, LOL. Thanks again for you experience, straight up comments, and proving that thinking before acting is a GOOD thing.

I have been making hooks for my powder coating business since 1991 and have amassed variety of quickly lashed up jigs.....and then you showed this BRILLIANT. I'm off to make one but I can see myself over complicating it by threading the cross drilled holes and adding maybe a thread on the square drive to take the wobble out of the socket !
While this jig is awesome and really simple to make, I think you may have a great improvement.
First, when the "unstable" was mentioned my first thought was the vise. I had a cheap vise and it simply did not hold much of anything, even with a cheater bar. I replaced it with a Wilton, need I say more. I believe there are some who just post negative comments for no reason, except to annoy others.
When I post a comment I do it because I want more information about what is being shown, I like the video, or maybe I have another method of doing the same thing. My purpose is to learn more or perhaps help others with a different way to look at something. I don't leave negative comments, except for one where every other word was a swear word.

I think it's brilliant! I've been wanting to make a set of cowboy cook sets for several people in my Family because I have a set my Wife bought me for a Birthday present years ago, And whenever we have a cookout They all Love it. It has a crossbar with 2 side poles that sit over the fire and has 5 hooks each 2" longer than the next so that you can hang pots over the campfire and you start out with the longest s hook and as the pot gets hotter you go to the next shortest hook until you dial it in perfect. And now I can make them thanks to you Sir.

This video couldn't have come at a better time: I was trying to figure out how to create something like this (with angle iron, drilling holes for the two bending fork tines, with some uncertain way to maybe make them like rivets through drilled holes in the angle iron pieces, etc.--very unstable plan on my part). This is way easier and involves nothing more complicated than drilling some holes. Thanks!

Personal opinion my friend, you are way better and smarter than to compare yourself to some brainless person out there who has nothing better to do. Mi opinion is “if somebody believes he can fix the whole world by in tangling yourself with such people, nah, it isn’t worth it” you are a smart person who’s offering for free a nice idea out there. I used to feel upset after doing something that was good just for someone to tell me its not but now i know its just "trolls" and all i do now is just reply " Thank you for your comment" and i do nothing else.However i do like your way and good vid by the way. just dropping in to tell you happy thanksgiving sir.. from your brother in washington state..
i used this method to make a axle bush for my oxy acetylene cart i custom made, i also had the metal dies in your previous vid.
then i had an idea, for the sizes i needed in between or over the large one i made a 5mm flat bar ring to go around it and welded that up as a ring to slip over the die, i then made a few more rings to go over the previous one so now i have several rings up to 20cm in diameter
not trying to criticize but it would be nice for noob like me to see your jig in action in your first video. this is a very good idea I can't wait to try making one.
