- start to finish removal of the Volkswagen golf mk 2 golf heater box. 1982 - 1992 replacement of the heater matrix core. covering of the blend door flaps with new foam and refitting of the heating system. no more cold air now blowing hot with full control of temperature
making and replacement of the blower vent sponge foam as mine was blowing out of the unit.
minimal loss of coolant
no more foam blowing out of the car vents
making new gaskets from self adhesive strip sponge
i have tried to cover the whole process where i was able to film it.
this is for the golf but may be similar to passat or sirocco and some older Audi models - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Now I understand why my heat was so marginal in the cars blowing bits of foam out the vents. Only one of my MK2s has a decent heater, all the others would barely warm the air.
Thanks again for the very detailed and helpful upload.
Great how to. Just followed it. One thing - to get the last air chamber in (one that goes to centre two vents) you can remove a small bracket under dash just to the left of steering wheel. 4 x 8mm bolts, with that out the way the chamber goes in easily. You'll need a long extension for 8mm as one is quite far into dash
@@zxcvbniuy perfect, thank you
I have a few MK2s that need the foam replaced and a couple that need the new heater matrix as well. Even though mine are all left-hand drive cars, your video was very helpful to give me a better idea of what needs to be done.
Many of the other heater videos I watched did not show as much detail as yours does.
Thanks again for the upload. Greetings from Los Angeles.
Thank you for taking time to give feedback. It's a longish job but I don't regret doing it, the cars heating system is great now.
Thanks for this, I’m about to start the job myself and this is the most detailed video I’ve found.
Good luck. It's quite straightforward just time consuming
All done, 10 hours in total. Now I’ve just got to chase the air out of the coolant system as I’ve got intermittent hot and cold air coming out the vents. What a pain! Any tips?
@@zacharywright153 I didn't have that issue, however I did vigorously squeeze the coolant pipes whilst the engine was running, this may have had the desired effect.
I’ve concluded that it’s the bypass valve not letting enough coolant through to the matrix. Going to replace the hoses, hope it works.
@@zacharywright153 good luck, let me know how you get on.
great video and really helpful, thx for taking the time to make this video
Thank you for taking the time to watch it 😊
Thank you so much for this video, i have Jetta MK2 from 1986. My matrix heater started to leak and i bought new to replace it cost 21 USD with sponges. Tommorow i need to complete assembly process i love this MK2 cars i Mode my Jetta to use only LPG because it is cheap fuel.😊
This video help me to safely do the job i hope everything will works good.
Good luck and enjoy it
Me encantó su vídeo, además traducido a Español. Gracias 😊
A friend and I did the heater matrix on my '89 Passat GT and it took us two days and we had to pretty much remove the dash. Not an easy job, but at least we didn't have to repair the heater box! Well done for sticking with it, you've done a good job.
Thank you for the kind comment. It was a long job but mostly enjoyable ( except the frond vent plastic 😂)
@@richardjweeks Having owned a car with no heat (blocked heater matrix), I know how unpleasant it can be with no heat in winter. Sounds like it's nice and toasty now. :)
@@_zzpza I was thinking how odd it is to be excited by something so everyday as in car heating. I'm sure the novelty will ware off but for now it's a real pleasure 🙂
lovely job mate. i'm looking forward to recieve my stuff and do the job myself. i have a left hand steering car so it all should be mirrored but your video is a real help. thx a lot. and cheers from Belgium
Take your time and enjoy it. It's pretty straight forward. 👍
You are really enjoyable to watch. Just discovered your channel. Your Golf mark 2 videos are really nice. Thumbs up 👍🏻
@@Na_Ranjo thank you for the kind feedback. It's really appreciated. 👍
Bravo!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Cut a clean square with dermal in side of the console plastic to access the heater core. Then you can access the parts in 15 minutes and cleanly plastic weld the hatch back. If it’s not a show car nobody will see the plastic welding. I’ve done about 20 cores that way in. Total jobs 30 mins. Or take the 8 hour route . I’ve done that as well lol. You had more parts out then I did so that may not work beyond just replacing the core.
ages ago i fixed it in my old mk2 with duct tape and it actually held op quite nice, i never took it all the way out though. In the one i have now it has just started to blow out the vents so i may need to fix it on that one as well soon. Just to make sure, are the windscreen heat a separate flap? i do have an issue with not being able to fully move the control to the windscreen. Edit you had the same problem maybe it's also just my cable being fitted wrong as well a honestly can't remember if it has always been like that :P
You have more patience than me I just put some big socks on a pair of gloves
that was me last winter, getting too old for that now :-)
Thanks a lot for the great video! Did you drain the coolant before taking off the heater box?
No, it isn't necessary, the coolant pipes are quite high, just plug them up and tuck out the way. You will still need to top up the system afterwards though.
Did you use brake cleaner to clean off all the old foam/ residue off the plastic ducts where you applied the weather strip to also? About to start this job myself and just amassing all the bits I need beforehand; cheers!
Yes, I decreased everything first to aid adhesion. I think I used is the for this job.
@@richardjweeksperfect, thank you! Has been a messy and annoying task to get sticky residue off of plastics in the past, so it’s good to know brake cleaner will work well for this task! :)
Brilliant job Richard. Being a work shy fop, I’m wondering if there is any reason why the holes in the flap could not be blocked off by a bit of plastic bonded to the flap rather than foam. Looks to me you could get access to most of the flaps without taking the box apart, but it’s hard to tell. I’m not bothered if it’s not what Vw did if it works cause no one will ever see it. What do you reckon?
Many people do this, they access the main flaps through the front cover and use eithe silver foil tape or duct tape. It works well enough and is less invasive. Check out a channel called "endfloat" he's an Irish fellow who does just this oñ his mk 2

I was wondering why VW didn't just have solid flaps with foam strips on the sealing surfaces. Now I understand where all of that foam in the vents was coming from.
The HVAC quality mastic-backed foil tape would adhere well to the steel flaps to seal off the holes.
Using open-cell foam on the sealing surfaces will conform and give more than closed-cell foam. I have found closed cell foam to be less reliable and more troublesome when it comes to adhesion and longevity.
In your opinion if I don’t need to replace the heater core would it be possible to spilt the box in the car to just remove and recoat the flaps?
It is not possible to remove the flaps with the box in site, however, people do recoat the flaps through the front of the box.

@@richardjweeks thanks for the reply, well now I know what’s going to be taking up my weekend.
@@quintonlennox4636 🤣
Vucum control value where does it connect to
Can you be more specific?
At 45:02 did you manage to fix that noise ? Because i have the exact same problem in my seat ibiza mk2.
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I changed the seals in the vent and it cured it permanently
@@richardjweeks OK thank you !
any link to the material tha you use in this video
It's been a while, eBay for the foam sheet and Screwfix for the seals. Spray fix is available from Amazon
How much do you charge for this service? My mk2 golf need a heater matrix replacement
I'm a hobbyist not a professional but I'm flattered you asked. Try it yourself, you will be surprised how easy it is. Regards Richard
@@richardjweeks you did a good job, my workshops based in Berkshire if it’s something you would consider. Thanks
I had mice get in my car during storage and they ate holes through the blend door. I used sheathing tape to cover the holes, without taking everything apart. (I already replaced the matrix a couple years ago)
Much easier if just repairing the blend doors, I hae seen it done in situ like that before.
Its much easier to remove the dash. i can do a heater matrix (removing the dash) in 3-4 hrs.
I didn't know that was an option. Would that Include reforming the blend doors too ?
@@richardjweeks Its the easiest way to get the heater box out. ( Its how we did it when i worked as a VW tech) While your there you can clean all the ducts and replace the felt between the duct joints so they don't leak.
@@vintagespeedshop Were the heater recall repairs on all the MK2s or was it just for the cars with coolant leaking into the cabin and vents?
Where on the matrix would they typically fail and leak?
I have a couple heater cores to replace, I am curious if they are the original ones of if they had been replaced under the recall campaign.
@@davidparker9676 It wasn't a recall on the matrix, it was a recall to fit thermostatic bypass valves in the heater pipes between the engine and bulkhead. They were fitter to reduce the temperature and pressure going to the matrix. If there was any signs of leaking they would include changing matrix but if no leak was detected they only fitted the valves.
The problem was on a few cars the pressure was causing the matrix to split open where the end plastic tanks were crimped to the sides.
They never actually changed the design or uprated the matrix it self.
@@vintagespeedshop What country are you in?
In the USA, we didn't get the thermostatic bypass on our MK2 cars as far as I know, I've never seen one installed on any of the many MK2s I've owned or worked on.
I have done the bypass retrofit on BMW E30 3-series because of insufficient heat from the heater. On the E30, the coolant flow was too fast for the heat to transfer into the matrix. Once the bypass kit is installed, the heat is dramatically hotter.
Certain years of the MK2 have a recall on the matrix itself here in the US, due to the heater matrix rupturing and burning the driver's legs.
Did you have to drain the engine coolant before you disconnected the heater coolant hoses in the engine bay 🤔👍
No, you will loose some coolant when you disconnect the heater matrix, but if you keep the hoses lifted high, you will retain the majority.
@@richardjweeks thanks Richard, when you had to remove the stainless steel staples to get the vent section back in, did you reseal it or just place them in
@@steviescott5379 just pushed them back into place, the staples aren't necessary as the vents hold them in place.
