Good luck not many people actually can do open source. Here is a tip. For example I am trying to apply to Airbnb. I can go find their open source repo and contribute to them. During application I can point to them and say I did this and this. Good luck!

I think my goal currently is to try and just become a more skilled developer whilst in college (Game Design & Development); so that if I do figure out that game design might not be the field for me, I won't be stuck trying to learn completely different things. That, and I also just love software development and tech as a whole, not solely for the lucrative job offers.

I’m pretty concerned because I won’t graduate with a bachelor for 3-4 years, I agree tech will be a lot more irrelevant further down the line thanks to AI but there must be certain fields that will always need human touch to operate or oversee in tech right?
yes. Not all tech roles will become irrelevant. A lot of new roles will be created because of AI first before it create a lot of damage. I do see a lot of copilot like feature being created internally at a lot of companies

IT was never a real career/job and thinking of it as such was just a joke. Better switch to another real career path like a doctor or real engineer.
Right now we give a 15% tax break to hire a foreign student STEM worker over any local student. Which is insane. We need to extend the OPT Tax break to all students and the unemployed. We further should create an apprenticeship program for all tech workers, the penalty for leaving early, could be that 15% tax break. Because every tech job, requires some training. And our tech companies are refusing to take a risk on locals, who can leave anytime after getting that training. This would really help our economy develop local talent. Instead, we give companies a huge incentive to disregard our own students, in favor of foreign students. That is why you are having issues finding a STEM job out of college, and you should be talking loudly in every forum about this.
There are 2 problems with CompTIA, it doesn't take into account new grads, and it doesn't take into account the long term unemployed. This Tech Recession is unusual, there are a lot of people who are long-term unemployed from tech. After 6 months, you drop off the DOL radar, because your unemployment runs out. If you visit a state job board, you won't find many software engineer jobs, most of us know this, so states have no way to track your progress. More importantly, we will admit 85,000 engineers from other countries, most of them will be software engineers.

ML research + implementation is growing fast. Lots of people are going that direction though, so may be competitive. - I am more interested in implementation, but wonder if research will pay better and be least saturated? Data infrastructure seems promising. May have less competition... - I am most interested in this field, but concerned it will be automated. Frontend seems most saturated... There are definitely more subfields, just don't know as much about them.
I would actually say back-end is the most saturated subfield. Also there's no set field where the competition is so much higher or so much lower, what matter the most is experience. And I can't confidently tell you that seniors or highly experienced engineers are not saturated at all

You know a lot of other content making it seem so easy to find a remote job in US while working in Thailand but what we need to know is that most of them are US citizens. During my application for a bunch of remote jobs. They have something now called Remote US so they only want to hire remote within the states making it harder to work abroad. I know contracting jobs are a possibility but I will need to do more research. This could be a video topic!
I am currently on route to get my Bachelors in software engineer but this job market does scare me a bit. I’m not really looking to aim for a big tech company. I don’t mind going for a small company as long as I make at least 70k a year. Is the job market bad with small companies?
I think small companies are facing different type of issue. For example the bar at certain startup may be higher work load might be higher and all of these may not be so attractive to people. I know certain mid to small sized companies are struggling to replace certain tech roles. I do think given bigger tech aren’t hiring as aggressively right now. Smaller companies are getting more visibilities. Hope this helps

Learning Ml and AI is a huge commitment and for many may not be worth it. Learning Python is a great first step and def keep grinding and applying. The market isn’t the best right now and no way to sugar coat this. When things do begin pick up hopefully you will be ready

Yes for sure a lot of layoffs and the job market is very tough. I personally think a master doesn’t hurt but it also doesn’t offer too much in comparison to phd. It could be a good option to get more exposure and find out what you enjoying working in. I would say the pro would be a lot of people in the program and the professors may have opportunities and def take advantage of that

Data engineering is an interesting one. Since is also a wide range of different role. I think it comes down to the closer you are to code and tech the safer you are. The more relevant the project you are on the safer you are. Are you making money for the companies or what you are doing is nice to have. A lot of companies opens more data roles during good markets because they want to snowball and make more money. I know different companies also label data engineers very differently so def be aware of that
AI based tools like chatgpt will be a great way to supplement your web development learning and make development process easier but what's more important than ever is improving your soft skills
99% of the developers on this planet are not going to join the big tech companies, nor are they inside your country. You are talking to the world atm, not to a exclusive US audience
This is true thank you for sharing. The US market only account for 35% of the global market and I mostly research the US market this time around. Many US tech companies have locations globally and I do think they have a strong influence on their local market.

Improve your prompt engineering skills to be 2x more productive. Usually managers don't care how smart you are as long as you get the things done.
