Ian who sells that bearing press?
About to take mine to a shop for new tires. Afraid what the techs are going to do to my Fuchs. Maybe I should just bring them the wheels and not the whole car.
Ian, I have enjoyed all your videos. I was curious if you were going to be posting a driving video with your thoughts on the performance of the car. I am in the process of tearing down my 2.0L and will be split the case tomorrow. I am considering the same modifications with an increase to 2257 and a mild WebCam 00472. I have not ordered those components yet until I have seen the condition of my internal components. Thank you again for all the great information. Steve
Hi steve. Glad you’re enjoying the videos. I’m actually working on a “final” bumblebee episode discussing how the car turned out. Stay tuned!
@@IanKarr thank you
Any recommendations for installing the sealing rings for the control box flaps? Looks like cracking the box open is the easiest way to install these or am I missing something?
I’ve actually not attempted that. But your observation seems correct.
@@IanKarr For the record: I've removed the 6 circular clips that seemed to hold the thing together. Then the part where the motor sits in just splits in halve. After that it's easy to take both valves/flaps including the connecting rod out and back in again. Good moment to attack the flaps with some rustoleum and paint as well!
Awesome job! thanks for explaining this.
Glad you found it helpful!
I dont think much people know how to use the round gap tester. Dont use the the ascending ramp to gap, only to measure, to gap the plug use the hole in the tool that is what it is for.
True. but the nature of that scale means at least some wedging is happening. I find the hole creates way too much torque and it's difficult to get things to open up by just a few thou.
No wide body 914's
I think there were a few. Eric's yellow one, definitely. And Larry's Gulf blue one.
@@IanKarr wide body uses a 10 " wheel on the front and either a 12 o 15" on the rear
Did you rebuild the handbrake on this car?? If so is there a video... I am having trouble with mine
I just painted the metal and lubed the parts. Also new pins. The retaining pins are often rusted into the bracket and require drilling or a lot of force to get out.
Why can’t you use “Hydraulic Lifters “ ? Adjusting the lifters every 6K miles gets old and messy !
These engines were designed for solid lifters. Hydraulics require less maintenance, yes. But they’re out of spec.
Very useful. Thank you
Glad you found the video helpful!
Svp, how windshiell go out?
Carefully :). If it’s an old windshield held in with butyl, leave the car in the sun for a while then use a piano wire or guitar pushed in the butyl between the glass and the frame to work your way arouns
So this air conditioner can even be installed on a 65 ford mustang that doesn't already have an ac unit? I wasn't sure if you were replacing one of its an add on! Thanks so much! Kendra

I don’t have jack stands or anything g that allows me to elevate the care evenly. Are you sure ramps aren’t sufficient?
If the bottom of the crankcase is tilted, there will be oil left on the low side. Can you use ramps? Yes, but probably about 25% of the oil will be left in there.
Thanks for the tips! Usually after I fight with these things and great really frustrated, I will scream, "NO WONDER YOU LOST THAT WAR!" Then I ponder "How did they do this at the factory?"

june 2024
Yes it is :)
White Spirit / Mineral Spirit is a solvent and one of the things that chemically damages rubber so should never be used (unless you can immediately clean it off with something else, and it's not easy to clean off; and which in turn can be even more damaging to rubber); it will both expand rubber and leach polymers, from any rubber it comes in contact with.
The quick exposure and immediate rinse I used shouldn’t have done any damage. If concerned, don’t do it. Or at least use a clean paper towel to wipe it down after. If the towel is clean white, highly doubtful any rubber has been compromised.

Hi Ian, I have a 1973 914 - 2.0 and wanted to replace the fuel pump, but do not know where it located. - Could you please tell me where the fuel pump is located? Thank You! ~ New Subscriber ~
Hey there. If your car is still stock, the fuel pump is on the engine side of the firewall on the lower right. Many people have moved the fuel pump to the front of the car. If this has been done, it could be accessible from the front trunk bulkhead, or it's behind the belly pan under the car. Hope this helps! Why are you looking to replace the pump?
@@IanKarr Hi Ian, Thank You so much for replying to my message! The 914 appeared to be stock and has been sitting for over 5 years, and I don't think the fuel pump is in working order...
I'll send mine over to ya Ian
ha!
:47 dOh!!!! Now you tell me. Too late. Anyways, gapped my Iridium plug with the puck, didn't break it, though. I always gently slide them into the plug gap, because that's just common sense to not manhandle the gap tools??? Maybe I'm alone in that category?? The car runs fine. No weird things happening with the ignition. heh, c' est la vie!
Lots of right ways to do things!

Thanks, Chris! I have only 3 brain cells left myself...
Hi Ian, Great Playlist. I'm making notes! I'm in the market for a 914 (I wish, I wish...) I'm newer than a newbie. My dad was a mechanic and taught us kids to work on our cars. I hope I have the patience needed to take this on but my skills are limited. I'm not a welder, or painter, or mechanic by trade so this will all be new. I'm hoping to find one that drives and clean enough to get my wife to cruise with me! LOL.. On this episode you talked about the hell hole and the need to see the outside with the rocker covers off. If I ask an owner to do this how hard is it to get them off? Thanks for the videos!
Hi, Workin. It depends. If the car is highly original (or faithfully cared for), the rocker covers may be held on by several rivets on top and a few screws below. Many cars have had the rockers off over their lifetime, in which case screws are often used in place of rivets. An unsophisticated owner may be grumbly about drilling the rivets and removing the panels. Knowledgeable owners know that removing the rocker covers is a part of any due diligence and will probably have pics of the longs behind the rockers already. IF you find an amazing car and the owner flatly won't allow the rockers to come off, and you feel like taking a gamble, poke the area around the right jack donut with a screwdriver or awl and see if the metal is solid. Ideally you'll do both before handing over money for a 914.
Beautiful car. Glad to see teeners getting quality attention. But, I wonder about putting the oil thermostat in front like that. Most engine cooling takes place on the engine itself, so what harm would there be in not having a thermostat at all? Maybe more importantly, until the engine is hot, the engine is having to pump thick oil 10 feet up to the front only to find a closed thermostat, then having to push that oil 10 feet to the back again. Porsche put the thermostat near the engine on 911 for a reason.
Maybe @pmb_performance can respond...
Thanks again Ian. Really helpful video. I need to call914 Rubber for some new fuzzies, that one at the bottom in particular!
Glad to help!

what solution do you use with the ultrasonic machine? sorry if i asked this before
hot water and dawn or simple green.
Cool car, awful music.
Maybe one day youtube will make better royalty free tracks available ;)
It just doesn’t need music throughout. Or mix it waaaaay down. It’s hard to follow the dialog at times.
Ask some f'n questions. Help us lay people understand the terminology and intent behind some of these changes. What does back pressure look like in the engine, what does it sound like, how could you tell, etc....
thanks
No lmao. Do not tap your spark plugs to gap them. Use the proper tool to pull or push the ground strap.
Please post a link to the tool tou use
There is NO need to use power tools to remove engine cover since it's just a cover. Power tools can strip those bolts and you'll eventually need to replace those bolts. I was able to take off the engine cover with a Torx screwdriver.
You right. Lots of ways to approach the task. I just prefer using my power driver. Using low speed and caution I have never stripped a bolt
While you had the chance you should have moved the fuel pump to the front trunk or under the fuel tank or in the steering gear wheel / master cylinder well area underneath the body between the front wheels. As need to prevent future fuel vapor locking. Which my car did from the day it was new. 1973 2.0 I still have the car. Cost: $5050.
Thanks, Perry. I moved the pump to the front on my bumblebee build, but left it in the original location on my green car. I've never experienced vapor lock, but that's maybe because the previous owner removed the bell from the heat exchanger valve and ducted it down.
I’ve just started to dive into your videos. Thank you for making these- huge head start. I have an odd sump a “weltmiester oil trap” apparently it runs with out a screen. Any input on if I should keep that or swap for something simple?
I'm generally a believer that if it ain't broke... I'm not familiar with that sump. Is there some reason you're running an external unit?

Thanks, Chris. When you say “fix” the washers, what’s wrong with yours?
@@IanKarr The water just dribbles out of the spray nozzels! Ive replaced the 4mm water tubes, the actual spray nozzels that squart the water, plus the line that goes to the spare tire and the water bottle seams to presurize ok. If i leave the system presurized over nght the tire looses a lot of air. I cant even see where the valve unit sits near the stearing column to take a look at that!!
@@chrisphillips2358 Clearly seems to be a pressure loss somewhere. Might be in the steering column switch...
@@IanKarr Indeed... Do you know/have any pictures as to where the switch is or what it looks like? Cant find anything on the interweb!
The washer trigger is integrated with the wiper switch. Personally, I think it’s better to install an electric pump rather than topping off the spare tire
