    The LT is no joke, it's a hard trail ankle twister. I made the smith's knob climb in the dark Tuesday night. I camped up top in a thunderstorm, loved it ! The Black forest trail is second to the LT in hard.

    Having grown up north of Boston, this kind of terrain is quite familiar. Now out west, we don't see a lot of this (Seattle/VancouverBC/Montana) - grateful that you got some sun and drier weather. The rain lends a certain mystique...until it doesn't. Enjoy the rest of the hike Brian - hope the better weather continues. Good choice with the MSR.

    Wow, one year ago and I’m the first commenter. This is one of my favorite places and I’ve camped there many times. In the back pond you might feel like you were alone in the world. I never canoed there but have seen it from the mountains on both sides. I tried to get to the top of the Traveler once but had to turn back because of mid 90s humid weather. Back down we cooled off in the pools of Howe brook. The rhyolite cliffs on north Traveler show the volcanic origins of the mountain.

    Looks like a fun loop. Attempted to do something similar from Putnam Pond in April of last year. Spent a night at Clear Pond, went up Treadway, and then a huge snowstorm kept us at Clear for the next few nights huddling around the fire lol.

    I’m new to this, looking to do my first solo hike and camp at DS. Do you know if you can camp anywhere in the park or only at designated sites?

    • @bdshultis
      @bdshultis Před rokem

      I believe there no “official” designated camp sites but there are plenty of unofficial established sites to use (you’ll usually see a fire ring and it’ll look like people have camped there). Just to be safe I’d check the Monongahela National Forest website for specific guidelines on backcountry camping

    That’s an awesome hike. I and a friend attempted to get to the peak before the loop trail was opened but it was in 90+ weather and when we got to the second flat buttress we decided to go back. One of 3 times I abandoned a hike in 40 some odd years of hiking in the White Mountains and BSP. When we descended to Howe brook we walked a little ways up to a nice pool and stripped down to skivvies and cooled off.

    Nice video and commentary. I've hiked that area many times. Stayed at about every spot in the vicinity of the Forks. On one trip in the (1980's) while sitting on the rocks at the falls a Navy jet flew up Red Creek just above the treetops. Trees bending over and was it loud! Really something to experience. We could read the numbers on the jet...wish I had written them down. The excitement of the plane along with a beer made for a great first night of the trip experience.
