'Sailing to active VOLCANOES & a broken engine' - Ch.22
We had a lava-ly time in this episode (sorry). Yes, we couldn't resist sailing to the beautiful Aeolian Islands, just North of Sicily. A group of seven volcanic islands, with a stinky elderly volcano on Vulcano island, to a younger more obviously active lava spewing volcano Stromboli! Join us as we explore these mesmerising cracks in the Earth's crust by day... and by night!
Time starts ticking though... as we have a deadline to make it to Corsica before flying to Latvia for Kath's brother's wedding (she's officiating don’t forget!!). So, in this episode we also have a quick stop in Palermo, before sailing from Sicily to Sardinia. We also tackle a leak in our fuel pipe!
So pour yourself a drink, sit back, relax and set sail on another adventure with us.

‘Navigating SWORDFISH FISHING boats in the Messina Strait’ - Ch.21

In this episode we tackle the legendary Messina Strait, dodging multiple swordfish fishing (Passerelle) boats, whirlpools, currents and traffic. The Scendente and Bastardi currents made their presence known, but soon enough we were spat out the top in one piece! Despite losing our orientation ever so slightly whilst behind the wheel(!), we soon set our sights on the beautiful Aeolian Islands ju...

We’re back, back, back again! YES! Ok firstly, we’re sorry it’s taken so long to edit these videos. Life ran away with us, Covid happened, work, sailing, weddings... it’s been hectic. BUT here we are (not in real time), re-joining Caladh post-Covid. Catch-up with us, as we set sail once again... this time for France! This was quite an emotional chapter for us. Not only because we are missing Caladh terribly (and wonder if she misses us too!), but also because in this episode we ended up making one of the most difficult decisions of our adventure so far... to leave the boat somewhere safe and travel back to Manchester. Family illness and the escalating pandemic were the main reasons for this mid-season final...

In this chapter, we sail from Athens, through the narrow channel off Poros and South towards the Peloponnese. Sadly the preventative maintenance we had invested in Caladh on Samos was beginning to unravel. Arghh it’s a nightmare! No easy answer. It is possible get visa and residencies, but it’s expensive, hurdles and complicated etc.! This season was filmed a couple of years ago.. we’ve sailed two years now on the 90/180 using some of tactics above.. in real-time we’re now leaving the Med (EU), because essentially we can’t be here! Nice to see you also clean the beaches and bays. We are also completely bewildered with the enormous pollution in Greece, seems nobody cares about the nature, they dump absolutely everything in the sea. Every bay, city, village we arrive in is heavily polluted, it is like walking through the garbage. Like you we also pick up garbage, but we keep it at 1 bag per bay/beach. By the time we reach shore again we always have 5 or 10 bags on board. Strangely enough, when you come to Turkey or Croatia the pollution is almost non existent, so it is possible for a country to keep nature clean. However when were in Athens 2 weeks ago we realized all hope is lost of the Greeks, even pigs keep their space cleaner than Greeks. Such a pity of what could be a beautiful country. For us the garbage is such a turn off that we will skip Greece for the most part.

    Nice boat, I've got a moody 36. Lived onboard on a mooring for 3 years. I never really rated the wind generators, not much power and noisy. Better a full solar arch with more panels for me. Spinnaker is a great investment as I imagine she's a heavy boat for her size. I also have a 25kg mantus anchor which is too heavy for the boat but once it held us in over 80 Knott winds in a freak storm in the med. What are your future sailing plans?

    • @TheSailingNomads

      Ooooo mantus anchor was something we considered!! Our only fear is not being able to pull up manually if needed. Spinnaker pole is deffo a good idea thou, especially for further afield. Love the moodys too, we nearly went for one in Scotland.. but settled for a bit less room in the end to keep costs down! Thanks for watching though and fair winds to you!!

      Hi Julie! Thanks for watching :) and how exciting for you! Mmmmmmm yes unfortunately this was one of the major outcomes of Brexit.. (ending free movement of people).. alas there is no getting round this, however, Aussies and now us Brits can do what’s called the “Schengen shuffle”, which essentially involves careful planning in and staying outside the Schengen area for 90days.. countries like Tunisia, Montenegro, Morocco etc. or further afield. Or you can apply for one of the (paperwork heavy and income dependent) visitor residency permits for one of the Schengen countries.. Greece, France and Portugal are some that we know of.. who seem to offer this! Really hope this helps and good luck 🤞🏼

Day 6 of owning our boat our prop shaft fell out of the boat and we were taking on water, we plugged the hole with a plug and bailed water out of the bilge for over an hour (we found out later that there was carton which blocked the bilge pump). • @chicoastro1
      @chicoastro1 Před 3 lety

      I meant the part that goes above the turnbuckle, the screw/cable attachment part, I thought I had seen something else. The important thing is that you have new standing rigging, you should be good for another decade or two. I watched the episode again but could not spot the fitting, maybe it was the wine? On the plus side, I did get to see the harbor master's outfits again. ;-D Cheers!

  • @chicoastro1

    A part of my sailing experience comes from racing, you should see (hear) the shouting that takes place there. Shouting out of frustration never helps a skipper achieve what they need, it usually comes from failing to anticipate the event taking place and failing to recognize that. It IS possible to convey urgency without disrespect. I like the chats, cheers!

    • @TheSailingNomads
      @TheSailingNomads Před 3 lety

      Oh you’re sooo right! Kath has raced a lot (dinghies and yachts) and yes sadly shouting was very common! What is it they say though... anger is often a display of fear or sadness? The better helms know how to communicate with their crew, or even get to the point where they don’t need to speak that much at all... it becomes intuitive. The shouty helms lost good crew occasionally too. So in the long run respect always wins!! Thanks for watching :) xx

    Glad you managed to get some sailing in, which is more than we did. Where did you leave her in the end. Looked like Kalamata. We loved the Peloponnese and especially Elafonisos. Stay safe both of you x

    It has been a challenging year! Hopefully 2021 will be less of a challenge. Putting the boat on the hard always marks the end of the sailing season and you have sailed far more miles than Aphrodite and me this year. Still as I sit planning next years wee trip to Stromness there is always something to look forward to. Stay safe and look forward to that splash; as the boat goes back where she belongs XXx

      Awww Sandy we can’t wait to hear more about your trip! We actually have some family in the Kirkness, so you won’t be far! It’ll be a beautiful sail and yes we can’t wait for the next splash! Thanks for your message and support as always! Happy New Year and fair winds xxx

      Oh wow, the great escape! What an exciting by plan!! Hallberg’s are just beautiful too.. if budget had allowed we might have considered one (don’t tell Caladh that thou!) haha how wonderful! Thanks so much for your comment though, we really appreciate it. If you have any random questions about anything do feel free to ask! Otherwise, yes we’ll keep an eye out for you for sure!! Good luck and keep in touch. All the best, KATH & T xxx
