Aphids love trees that are distressed. An arborist told me to water my mature tree more and fertilize it, and spray the tree with water to physically knock off the aphids. I did that, plus got some ladybugs that immediately flew away, and now I can’t find any aphids. The new leaves are now flat and glossy, like they should be. I didn’t think it would work, but it sure did.
Where can I get the insecticidal soap? Any brand recommendations?
Most insecticidal soaps are pretty much the same. For small scale you can use the ‘Safer’ brand, for larger scale I use ‘M pede’
Are fungicides safe? What is a natural treatment thats safe?
Great videos! I plan to watch them all. Thanks for making them. Do you think round up persists in the soil? Could you do a video on how long chemical pesticides persist? You said that you use them sparingly. Wondering even if you use them once how long that stay in the soil? Just an idea for a video.
@healthyhorticulture I just planted two trees with this issue, a Pink Lady & Golden Delicious. I just watered them like crazy to help them establish roots a bit, until they started to put on a couple of leaves. Then I went to town chopping off all affected leaves I could find & throwing them in the trash. I spritzed the whole tree with celestial seasoning's cinnamon apple spice tea. I plan on using the Captain copper spray in the springtime as it starts to flower. Glad I saw this though, I was planning on planting a juniper! I'm in an inner city environment, so that fungus has a lot of hurdles to jump before it gets to my apple trees to re-infect them. None of my immediate neighbors have cedars or junipers... Any further advice? Or have I done about everything I can do? Also I hear sulfur spray work well... What are your thoughts? Have you tried it before?
Really glad I found you... you know your stuff! My question: How do I get rid of Cedar Apple Rust once my tree gets it? It sounded to me like preventative spraying was recommended but it's too late for that for me as my tree already has it bad. Interestingly, my Honey Crisp got it but my Golden Delicious (10 feet away) did not. Is my apple tree going to die? How do I get rid of Cedar Apple Rust? (BTW, our yard is surrounded by junipers so, there is no getting rid of them.) Thanks!
There’s nothing you can do at this point. Most of the leaves will probably fall off but your tree won’t die. Keep the trees watered during dry spells and maybe a light fertilizing just to help them through any stress, then work preventativly next spring. Hope that helps.
All I could say... thank you,and you're goooooood.
What insecticidal soap do we use? Where do we get it and is there a particular type of ingredient in it that we must have?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE INFORMATION IN THIS VIDEO. NOTES HAVE BEEN TAKEN FOR NEXT YEAR. THIS VIDEO HAS GIVEN ME ALL THE HELP AND ADVICE I NEED TO TAKE CARE OF THIS PROBLEM.
I think you just baited the tree for another visit by Mr Bear!
ants farm aphids, get rid of ants ants aphids disappear , no ?
Great, informative video. Best I have seen on the subject so far
What if it snows instead of rains
I have to say that this video is the best video when it comes to taking care of your fruit trees. I'm new to this and I planted 10 fruit trees on my property last year. When I was researching how to take care of them all I found was a 3 minute video that didn't explain much and didn't make a lot of sense. Until I found your video. Thank for taking the time to explain everything I need to know, what and why I need to do what I have to do to keep my trees healthy and happy to produce the most and best fruit possible. Thanks again. Jim from charlton ma.
Best video I’ve seen on this subject, and I’ve seen a lot! My mistake has been waiting until petal fall to start my spray program. Thanks for great information.
I just purchased a beautiful apple tree 3 days ago and this evening I was getting ready to put it in the ground and now almost every leaf on the tree is badly curled and very full of aphids when you open up the leaf! With that many curled leaves I don't see how it can be saved, because if I pick off every curled leaf there won't be hardly any leaves left! Any suggestions without removing the leaves?
Liked your treatment. Do you have any images of the trees own repair?
We have a Granny Smith tree that’s only got a small amount of rust but our Fuji is greatly being affected.
If your tree is already infected I would use spectracide brand immunox mixed with captan but the parts that are already infected will remain infected. Start your spraying earlier next year.
What was the two products recommended?
My apples are the size of cherries. I just saw this. I just sprayed. I thought my wife sprayed a week ago but apparently read the jacks organic fruit spray instructions wrong and sprayed the soil only cause it said "or soil". Is it too late to save them?
I wouldn’t give up hope, this is one of those situations where time will tell.
@@healthyhorticulture it sure did. I found out who the real critical thinkers were
Brilliant video. Many thanks.
Thank you so very much for this information and thorough explanation. My first year with apple trees on a new homestead, so i appreciate this so much.
Another Great video!! It did help alot!! Thanks again!!
Really really appreciate all of your knowledge that you share in your videos! I am just beginning my fruit tree journey and find it very challenging! Thank you for making these videos!
Thank you so much! This is exactly the info I’ve been looking for. Mostly on youtube you have people who talk talk talk talk, you waste so much time being subjected to information that’s none of your business, you fast forward and backward trying to get to the place where they finally get to the itty bitty point but it’s so vague you have to google some more. Drives me bananas! You on the other hand go straight to the point, no BS, and voila, you just outlined a clear, concise and simple spray schedule for my home orchard and pertinent information on promoting the health of my apple trees. Thank you again. Now I have but one formidable garden nemesis: ants! I’ve used food grade diatomaceous earth (the ant’s response: really, are you serious?), borax/sugar lures, no dice, commercial traps, useless, some concoction using orange oil, I felt stupid. They are everywhere in the yard, good soil, bad soil, natural stone, fake stone, you name it. And they’re mining aphids out of spite. My poor roses! I just purchased a spray called Wondercide. Let’s see how that goes. If you have ideas, please share.
Your videos are outstanding , Thank you so much for the info ! I thought I had a problem with 2 of my Weeping Alaskan Cedars(. some branches turning brown ), My daughter and I started a small 20 tree resistant variety apple orchard along with 60 Chestnut trees and your advice has been very helpful . Weve used primarily Neem and copper early , then Neem and Capt Jacks through the season . She has laying hens foraging so were trying to keep them safe too .Thank you again so much
Ive got aphids and ants on the undersides of the new leaves on my apple trees I've tried spraying pesticides but they come back so now I will try the soap. I'm in Bulgaria where lots of people paint the trunk of their fruit trees white . The reason is they say ants won't cross the white border because they feel exposed to prey .
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You the man…
Amazing info! Thank you, new subscriber. I might mention the dangers of using hay in the garden though... "Grazon" & other persistent herbicides are nasty and do so much damage, but you'd think it's a nitrogen or watering issue
I’ve never heard of this until yesterday when i saw the orange slime on our juniper tree. It has been raining a lot. The tree is literally covered in it. is there anything i can do? Do i have to cut the tree down? We dont have apples, but im sure there are crab apples or something fairly close by. I’m in the suburbs. This is all new to me. Thanks for any help!
Thank you for this video i have learned a hell of a lot. My father has left the orchard to me this year and im a nubi. Thanks again!
Help- my tree trunk has lots of bark coming off
1 more question. Sorry, lol. Is Mancozeb ok for Peach Trees & plum trees too? Thanks.
I don’t think mancozeb is labeled for stone fruits (peaches, plums, nectarines, cherries). But check the label. If it’s not labeled for stone fruits look into products containing chlorothalonil. I believe they are commonly labeled for such. This would include trade names like “daconil” or “fungonil” as a replacement for mancozeb on stone fruits
@healthyhorticulture awesome. Thanks. Ya I thought it was more for Apple trees. Good to know.
So, should someone spray a fungicide like the one you have here once every 14 days for apples? I sprayed mine once at Silver Tip and another at green tip. Now they're at tight clusters. No pink seen yet. Should I spray them again? like now. should I spray up until flowers start opening. Then restart once the flower petals fall?
Yes, tight cluster and pink are typically when they are most prone to infection. Once most of the flower petals fall off you probably want to use an insecticide as well as a fungicide. Right at petal fall is when the curculio insect starts to attack the actual fruit. m.czcams.com/video/tNsY807nRyY/video.html
@@healthyhorticulture awesome. Thank you so much. It's nice getting a little advance from people who have done it a while and know. Thanks. I sprayed again today.
What is the best natural remedy for plum curculio?
Probably surround WP
Where do you find Surround WP? Or any organic insecticide?
You can find it online, I don’t know of any stores (in my area) that sell it.
My apple trees get attacked every year after petal fall with a brown “speak” that makes the apple drop prematurely. I’m thinking plum curculio so? What can I do?
So for first year beginners, would you still recommend putting cardboard or newspaper down first then compost then wood chips?
I have a question. If I have cardboard between the wood chips and soil, how will the wood chips deplete the nitrogen? Actually 2 questions, would it be better to use saw dust from lumber yard instead of wood chips? Seems to me like saw dust would break down faster. Plz help.
Great information. Thank you. Clear concise instructions. This is exactly what I needed. Very educational and easy to understand.
Awesome video. Learning so much from your videos. Thank You
Glad it’s helpful.
I live in what used to be the apple orchard capitol of Connecticut and unfortunately have an old abandoned orchard behind my property, there are still trees producing fruit and I wonder if I'm fighting a war that can't be won with all the spores. I do get some decent fruit but it's an endless battle. Great videos though, easy to follow vs the university pages and many others
That sounds like a fun project, there’s something special about restoring an old orchard. Shoot me an email…healthyhorticulture@gmail.com. Maybe I can swing over and take a look. This orchard was abandoned for several years before I stepped in. m.czcams.com/video/kfShcPc4yng/video.html
Thats actually a nice root system tho.
Yea the roots were in better shape than I thought they would be.
Yellow leaves is overwatering
OMG. Just the best video on "cedar" apple rust. Just found your channel and just finished scab video. I learned so much. Now I'm glad I didn't chop down my "white cedar" (arborvitae ) trees. I have found Surround clay to be very helpful for my biggest pest here in Vermont which is apple maggot. (despite sticky pheromone traps). My number 2 problem is scab and I'm thinking of adding Captan WP to my clay sprays, in additional to cultural controls. Your thoughts? Kind Regards, Craig
That should work fine after (flower) petal fall. But I would still do a few mancozeb applications earlier in the season to prevent primary scab.
Great videos. thanks for sharing your knowledge. Do you have a remedy to combat Japanese beetles?
I watched a different video and sprayed through very early spring 3 times. Adter that i watched for bud bread and sprayed with Captan before last rain. Plan on applying before next rain. I understood this was all i needed for apple fungus diseases. You did not mention captan in latest video. Confused
Captan is a good fungicide. It’s more effective at controlling scab than it is for rust. I prefer to use mancozeb for the earlier sprays up to and including petal fall (when the flowers fall off) then I switch over to captan to continue my scab control later in the season
Thank you for sharing. Very informative and well explained!
I thought I had apple scab last year for the first time on an espalier multi-grafted apple tree, but I just learned about bitter spot, and now I am not sure which I had. There was one variety that didn't have the spots at all. Would bitter spot affect all the fruit? You have explained the fungicide application better than any video I have seen!
Which varieties where infected and which variety was not. That might actually help with diagnosis
What a great teacher!
Thanks!
