      Hi Vic, Many thanks to you. Its knowing when to stop putting the paint on. I did 3 coats of butterscotch colour. The second look good and almost left it at that. But 3 coat finished it off. 1st coat was very light then 2 good coverings. The paint I had from Rothko and Frost in the UK, and sprayed with a gun, but there can sprays are very good. Under coat was White, and all Nitrocellulose. Best wishes from Wales Mike.

      So does the nitrocellulose give off the butterscotch colour finish or would I need to tint the white or clear?

      Hi. Many thanks for your comment, pleased you enjoyed it. Yes I couldn’t find a Special set of drawing only the Junior. But that was ok there was all the information I needed on there. Neck and head stock angle, dimensions and much more. Electronic was not much of a problem. Laying it out to scale I worked of a photograph which turned out very good. Made my own template etc which I’m sure you can see at about 20min into the film. Same with the scratch plate reference off a photo and scaled to the guitar. They are a great guitar to make and there is another video of a LP Special I did last year in Cherry Red on my channel with more detail being filmed. Best wishes Mike

    Great build!! The trick of the holes under the flamed maple top to make the elbow ramp is perfect (6:44). Assuming that the flamed maple top thickness is around 7mm, what would be the depth of that holes? Do you remember which bit diameter did you use with the dremel for that? I would bet that the wood should broke with this technique but it prooved to be flexible enought and worked like a charm. Congrats!

    • @mitarrguitars
      @mitarrguitars Před 3 měsíci

      Hi tjcsantos. Thank you for your comment, and I’m so please you enjoyed the build. It was a tricky job which I had not done before. So learning on the job so to speak. The flame maple was 6mm thick and the cuts was 50% of the depth. The bit i used was a straight cutter about 3 mm in diameter. The total amount of wood removed was about 50% in depth and 50% across the elbow ramp, 3 mm cut 3mm gap. The big thing about doing this job was the top MDF templates used to clamp and pull the maple down to the body. It needs to be 20mm plus in thickness. I didn’t but you could wet or soak the section in hot water which will be bent. Hope the is was some help. Best wishes Mike

    I love watching your videos, Michael! They’ve helped me increase my luthier knowledge immensely! I have a quick question. When you’re attaching the fretboard to the neck, what size tack/nail do you hammer in right in the fret slot? It’s the two nails that you use to keep the board from sliding when gluing. I just want to make sure I’m not using too large of a tack. Thank you!

    • @mitarrguitars
      @mitarrguitars Před 5 měsíci

      Many thanks I’m pleased you enjoy the videos. The nail/ tack are very small about 1 to 1.25 mm in diameter. They can be the same size as the fret slot or thinner. But no bigger than the fret slot. It’s not to critical the fret covers the hole. Best wishes Mike

    PRS Stain Process After taping guitar/fretboard -Get a mildly damp piece of material which has been dipped only in water and run over body this opens the grain slightly to help it accept the stain. -They use an clear isolated substance to prevent stain making its way to binding/body -They then apply an alcohol based charcoal stain and as applying, it’s wiped with a cloth to ensure even coverage and avoid blotchiness. After 15/20/25 mins, sand the colour out being careful not to sand to much, if too much is taken then it creates a stripped look and too little it will go blotchy In the example for fire red burst, they apply orange onto black and the orange which goes down next is a water based stain. Avoid going over the edges where possible and wipe with rag/material as you go The excess is remove from the cloth by pressing down into a wadd of paper (like blue roll) and this allows for the hand carve cutaways etc to be more easily done, taking away some of the extra stain from rag prevents bleeding further into bind/body by going under tape. Then finally they apply an oil based stain to the top which is their red to get the red to pop through and be the over riding colour (making sure to wipe as you go to avoid blotchy appearance), this seems to be enhanced by the orange and then the original black just pops through as the wood grain. It appears the final layer was put down 2/3 times. It seems to be a real art form this part of the process but it looks amazing! I wish I could build guitars because it looks amazing to be honest! Hope this helps if you didn’t know it. Let me know if you ever want another set of hands! 👍 Check video from PRS for the full visual breakdown m.czcams.com/video/HTTldx09C9k/video.html

    Could you put the camera farther away next time? i was almost able to see what you were working on ;-). Sorry, just being a little bit of a smartass. Love the video and the stuff you work on, but *please* get the camera closer to the guitar (you did it once on the output jack retainer). One of the things that is nice to get out of videos like this is what original 1973 (or whatever year) parts are supposed to look like. For example, you asked folks for help IDing the installed pickup that you pulled out - but we can't see it clearly. Same with the neck pocket, heel, frets, and tuners. Great information but i could have "watched" this with the sound up and the visual off. :)

      Thank you for your reply @@mitarrguitars! I am building now 2 Les Paul guitars (one with P90 and another one with 2 Humbuckers) - both from LP '59 templates. These Les Pauls will have 4 degree neck angle, with the neck tenon being straight and the neck pocket on the guitar's body having the 4 degree inclination. I am also starting the build of a PRS Custom 22 (and this is why I arrived to your videos). I saw that these PRS have 3 degree neck angle and it seems that PRS makes the opposite as Gibson does - PRS uses a straight neck pocket and a 3 degree neck tenon. The end result will be the same but, just to be align with the "real deal", can you confirm this was what you have done in your build? And about the SD pickups: what is the model of the pickups you have used? Thank you very much!!

      On Les Pauls we have the neck plane (4 degrees, the same as neck) and the pickups plane (0.55 degrees). On PRS Custom 22 guitar it seems to be 3 degrees from the neck pocket all over the way until it reaches the tremolo/bridge. Can you explain how did you proceed with this? Thank you!

      Your right mine as a 2.5 to 3 degree angle on the neck. Neck pocket is straight, but to be honest you can do it the other way if you wish. Ange the pocket and straight neck. I was not 100% sure what the PRS angle is, but 3 degrees max is my favourite. Have a look at my neck angle jig video you will see more. No angle on the top of the body it flat and straight to the start of the body carve. Pickup are SH-4 JB at the bridge and SH-2n Jazz at the neck. Fabulous pickup set I use it a lot. Many thanks, Merry Christmas to you. Mike

    I absolutely love your videos, Mike. I watch a lot of builders but you by far are my favorite. I learn so much from you. I particularly enjoy when Oliver joins you. Those are special times that he will always remember. You are always supervising him and he’s never in harm’s way so pay no mind to the negativity. I would love to have the opportunity to learn firsthand from you. Oliver will be carrying on your tradition for years to come and that is an amazing gift for you both.
