I would rather hear Mountain Girl on her own terms - not in relation to or being pushed to spill information on the GD for the Garcia obsessed masses - Irish funerals must come to an end - so something new can be birthed - not forever lines of copy cat cover bands (including Dead & Co). I appreciate her warnings about LSD as well as music is still happening - even if you need to find it in a subway. The bus was called "Furthur" not "Backwards".

Great episode … love the Good ol Grateful Dead podcast - each episode is like grabbing a volume of the Encyclopedia Brittanica off the shelf and digging in.. Re:Oteil’s tie dye comment.. I don’t think someone wearing a purple tye die is the issue in and of itself, it’s when it’s been dictated by media/government that you must respect (which should be earned)and pay homage to the purple tye dye or you’ll be labeled tye-dyeist or tye-dyephobic if you don’t, that’s the real issue

I was at the show in Portland ME when you played with Tom Constanten. The place is standing room only and was packed. My wife and I are small in stature and thanks to friend of ours we were able work our way to the front of the stage just in time for Oteil's set. That show had some great highlights for us. We got to see T.C. a member of the dead family I had only read about. Cyril Neville was amazing. When he entered the show my first thought was "That has to be the coolest dude on the planet." It was electric watching him play. However, our favorite memory from the show was when Oteil sang They Love Each Other. My wife and I were right up front and it was like you guys were playing just for us. That moment is now in the highlight reel of our 32 years of marriage. Thanks!

Chris sure has the gift of stories! Interesting how shy Derek seems on stage (he rarely looks at the audience) but is definitely his fathers son in interviews... but only appropriate stories.

That whole part around minute 21 where you're talking about numbers of bass strings and bass players...that cracked me up. Bass players and keyboard players...gotta respect each other's zones or watch out! Other than that, thanks for the honest talk about substance abuse and what it does to people. Hey @Oteil I'm not trying to tell you how to do your job. I think you should have someone go to section 203 at the Sphere during sound check. It's an amazing arena but we couldn't hear your bass at all throughout most of the 3 nights we went to on week 3. Your bass is really getting buried in the mix. I know you're hearing it well on stage through the ear monitors but anywhere above the 100s sections it's almost impossible to hear you. When you're playing the high notes it comes through but when getting down and funky in the lower registers it was a bummer not being able to hear you. The overall sound is clear there but it's definitely not loud enough. I usually wear really good earplugs at any shows I go to but they weren't needed at all at the Sphere. That's not a good thing when you're trying to feel the groove and get your dance on. The sound is so low in there that you can easily hear anyone talking within a few rows from where you're sitting. I'm not sure why the bass isn't cutting through but either the person at the soundboard doesn't know what they're doing or no one has gone into the stands and different sections to give a listen to everyone playing with a packed house. I'm urging you to have someone go to the sections during the show and see if they can hear you as cleanly as the other instruments. Personally I wanna hear you the most but I'm a bass hound. I've spoken with alot of people who think the same. The vocals and guitars are definitely the highest in the mix but it's the bass that makes most people dance. At least for me. That was the only bummer out of the 3 night's we went. Well that and the fact that everything needs to be turned up. It's gotta be the lowest volume I've ever heard at a concert. My ears are already shot which is why I use good earplugs but it was no problem talking to anyone during the shows and it was annoying AF to hear people talking throughout the shows. Hope you take this to heart ❤️ 💙 💜
