Really like this bag. Sleeps like quilt with option for LW but zippers closed for easy access in the middle of the night. I sleep cold and this is great draft free sleep system. Even better would be an 850 down option PLEASE BA.
Check out other you tube videos, OMHC you tube video did shining rock last year and showed the washout. Old Man Hiking Club has guys all over 60
This video was taken shortly after the hurricane tore through this area. Since then there has been a tremendous amount of young growth of understory species. I just finished hiking this (May, 2024) and it would have been great except for the incessant deer flies and the overwhelming number of ticks.
I did camel at farles lake but I spilled some water at my campsite about a mile past the lake. Hiked to juniper on a litre of water😜 lesson learned
Planning on taking the same exact route. Do you think this could be completed as a day hike if we embark at 8am?
You would have to be moving awful fast. It gets pretty treacherous in parts. I would not personally want to try it, but I am sure it is doable by some... Thanks for watching!
New to the channel. Just bought the oatmeal & veggie stew ,came home and looked this up and hear I am. Awesome video, straight to the point. I like the idea of not wasting my water. Wonder if you Add a snack to it or do you need two? Cost was 9.00 each
Hey there! Thanks for checking out the video. Adding a snack is totally up to you, but it never hurts to have extra goodies on the side, right? Enjoy your meal! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
They need red lights
That was beautiful! At around 17 minutes the ferns were incredible. Wish you had shot more of them. I hadn't ever seen the orange red lizard or the millipede with the yellow edges/legs. I am a 5th generation Atlantan and 10th generation Georgian, but only hiked around Cartacay Ga. Funny that my ex-husband is named Woody, and I didn't know there was a Woody Gap. God bless ya'll.
Thanks for watching! 😀
Why didn't you go around grassy cove top ?
This was not near Grassy Cove Top. We did however go over Grassy Cove Top the day before and it was not closed at that time.
@@InOurElement it sure looked like you went over grassy cove top when you went out I left your Gap and got to shining Rock camp. It's been closed for years. Otherwise art lobe up to shining Rock camp is only a 300 FT elevation
@tallyrc I'm sorry, yes, I thought this was a different video, lol. We wanted to go over grassy cove top. It was a lot of fun 😁
Can I charge my tablet witch 10000?
I would assume so....
I was there a few weeks ago. They have removed one of the landings of the tower. Its shorter but wider steps...still a good view. The trails on the other side are good too... there are some spots that hold water after heavy rains. The other trails are also multi use....look out for bikes.
Thank you for this. Recently I did the regular trail and opted out of the challenge trail. It was 1 day after torrential downpours. Seems like the challenge is very doable in our future.
You can do it! Thanks for watching and glad you liked it :)
The Florida " mountains ": the climb from about 6:00 to 9 minutes into the video. Topography and terrain reminds of the rolling terrain that is the Appalachian foothills. Moreover, to some extent, parts of Torreya S Park, and also nearby Blackwater River State Park in the panhandle, are similar at a smaller scale to Providence Canyon park in SW Georgia.
Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed the video. My son and I are doing Alexander Springs to Hopkins Prairie in mid March. Lots of good information.
Great place to hike and camp. Just wanted to let you know the hard part of the hike you made straight up Ivestor Mtn. is the old Art Leob trail. That part was supposed to be closed years ago because of erosion. The new trail goes around the back side of the mountain and is much easier. You are right about the trails not being maintained. It seems the forest service is content letting the trails go back to all wilderness. Happy trails.
We are so glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching, and Happy New Year!
Grassy cove top is closed. Not sure why they didn't take art loeb or investor around..
My first real backpacking trip was the Art Leob…. starting at the boyscout compound. A pack that was a rookie attempt at being lightweight (35lbs) and sweltering July heat made for a suffer-fest I still remember. A great time that brings back great memories. Nothing beat climbing up onto the granite boulders overlooking the valleys, and nothing was worse than 10” wide trails overgrown with rhododendron lol
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's amazing how backpacking trips can create lasting memories. Thanks for watching!
Take care
Hiked this in 2013 for 4 nights. Went up tenant mtn out of the parking lot, out to cold mtn and back. Camped at that same campsite on the last night that you stayed at on your first night, then came back on the fire road. Used dead reckoning and pace counts to navigate. Had 50mph winds and a storm the last night. It was a wonderful trip!
Wow, yea, we love it there. Going back for sure! Thanks for watching!

That’s a crazy experience! Glad y’all survived! Those washouts were crazy!
Yes they were......thanks for watching!
That whole area up there is not marked ... so it's all kind of dangerous especially if you're not familiar with route finding. It's even harder doing it with a backpacking pack on. I'll second the recommendation of Flat Laurel/Sam Knob loop ... I did it as an overnight but could easily be shortened or customized depending on personal skill level. I agree ... if they have a sign on one end stating it's impassable - then it should be marked the same on the other end. Glad y'all made it safely and hopefully you're knee is doing better!
Thank you, and thanks for watching! 😀
Stumbled upon you two researching the Foothills Trail, love your stuff. Hilarious description of the water from the cistern. Spit my coffee out. Keep hiking!
Thank you so much for watching and supporting the channel! Yea, that water was HORRIBLE! Hahaha!
My family hiked this area back in 2019. I remember getting "lost" at a couple of the crossroads. Everything was really green when we were there.
OMG, I can totally relate! I've been in a similar situation before, where the crossroads had me scratching my head. But hey, it's all part of the adventure, right? And I bet the greenery made the whole experience even more magical! Thank you for watching!
Glad you guys made it alright! I guess this isn’t one of those times I can use Mr Backpacking with Jason Sir’s, “You got one life, live it” quotes?
Haha, yeah, this time we can't rely on Mr Backpacking with Jason Sir's quotes. But hey, we made it out in one piece! Thanks for watching and supporting our channel!
@@InOurElement you guys are awesome! Thanks for not getting unalived out there hahaha
Almost dying is just part of the job, right? But seriously, we're glad we made it out in one piece. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel!
Shining Rock Wilderness is the best, its my favorite here in Nc. May I recommend the flat Laurel creek trail loop starting from black Balsam knob trailhead and going to the waterfalls near to little Sam's knob, then back around below Silvermine Knob drainage and back to the parking lot. Its epic scenary and a much easier hike and much more well traveled trails so very wide. Wilderness areas do not allow marking of trails which is why no blazes.
Thanks for watching! Yes, that is one of the routes we want to do. It was actually where we were going to end our trip had it not gone sideways. We plan to go back this next April and do some more sections out there. We can't wait!
Wow. Glad you two made it out ok. Looks like I can not worry about hiking that trail.
Yea, they really need to do something about that.....
Thats a brutal hike 🤨 I have hiked Va NC and there is some beautiful places to hike there. Its a great were not solo hiking. Its even more sketchy when you're all by yourself. I'm glad you both are hikers with some experience...bad decisions could have been made. We can all be grateful for lessons learned.👍
This gives me PTSD, but the views were awe-inspiring. Definitely an experience I will never forget.
Holy F**k
Quit crying 😿
Damn, yall be safe.
Thank God
Liking the video because I'm glad you made it.
great documentation of your trip.i live in ocala and want to go hiking finnally have all my gear.where can i get maps for the trails in the ocala national forest?thanks
We use far-out. It used to be called guthook. You can download whatever sections of the trail that you want. Thanks for watching, let us know if you have any other questions 😊
I got To Buy A Anker. I Use A Cheap Power Bank
Great filming, awesome trail, my favorite in the South Cumberland system. I hate it for your viewers that you skipped the 3 miles through the gorge at the beginning. If you are doing it point-to-point, Grundy Forest to Foster Falls, you technically didn't complete the Fiery Gizzard Trail. Dog Hole is its own separate trail. Yes, the hike through the gorge and the climb out to the junction at Raven Point is very strenuous, but the scenery is breathtaking. For me, it is the highlight of the trail.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video and the trail! It's always nice to hear positive feedback and know that I'm capturing the beauty of these trails. I'll definitely keep your suggestions in mind for future hikes. Thanks for watching!
I bought 2 generation XMID 2 a few months ago best tent ever been saving for pro .You guys gave excellent review.
Good morning. Thanks for the sub.
Thank you as well! :)
@@InOurElement have a wonderful day
I live close and you should see the idiots out here 🤬 back side of lake Dorr has a homeless camp setup
Geeez, that sucks...
Very cool
Yep! 22 years old and I did get the reference ⚪️💿 Great overview on the camp. I’m moving to Jacksonville soon from the mountains of NC and this reminds me a lot of home and it’s not very far at all from the area I like (Oakleaf to Blanding Blvd/etc) No mountains but there is forestry! I never noticed until recently how woodsy Florida is when you go inland/away from the cities. It’s beautiful. I guess it’s a similar concept to how you can have cities in the mountains, hence Asheville up here or Colorado out west. The camp isn’t very booked out this time of year but I’d think it’s hard to get a spot in the summer without booking further in advance.
We own an OG x-Mid 2P, a newer version 2P, and the PRO 2P LOL We love all of them! Thanks for watching!
