I made it work with the Vonets router, but it was tricky. I think I had to edit some DHCP script. TLDR: it needs the wifi driver ported properly
I wonder how DietPi would do in comparison.
Hey, as a newly to the retro World, I fully understand. Work comes first. I do enjoy the discussion. In my own interests, I am an advocate of projects, over long-term schedules. Can be easier to manage. Hence like another commenter, I'd love to see more on the BBC Micro, or BASIC - or something I could follow and try!
@@jamesdecross1035 the project content also lasts a long time. I’m doing my own project for the micro based on what you did some time ago!
Can you do more shows about the BBC Micro? I love your content and I just bought a BBC micro!

Well thank you for your kind words, Your not the first to say this.....
It's been a while since I used Atari Basic, but I think Control-C will break the program from running.
First comment!
Second!
I am using rpi zero w itworks beyond wonderfull. everything works.
Excellent prototype! How has the paint lasted on those controllers ? I noticed that you did not spray any clear laquer on them.
Many thanks, Indeed I did not.. at the time this was a slightly rushed project as the machine needed to be ready for exhibit at the Cambridge UK retro fest event, so allowing time for the paint to cure and the little use this was actually going to have in real terms I didn't add any further varnish or coatings. 5 years on and the controller has deteriorated, not though use but in store, as it had its own cable wrapped around it and that plastic rubber reacted with the paint / plastic, which has eaten at the buttons and case ... oops!
Risc os direct 5.30 when?
No idea, im not involved in the project anymore, so best contact them directly
I wish riscos had SMP support ...
The problem you've got is even if the OS did this and lets say also supported 64bit running. You've got no software, no one wants to develop without charging £££s for there creations and the top of the 'community' is actively hostile to seeing ports of useful software such as Libra Office, VCL or Arduino IDE, hence its stuck in this vacuum.... fine if you view it as a'retro play thing' of the past, but really useless as a daily driver even on a hobby system like the Raspberry Pi.
@@WiFiSheep Even if the applications aren't multi threaded, if they have an smp enabled kernel and scheduler, it will still massively benefit the OS, as different applications could run on different cores. As to the community being against porting, well, that's just sad. It would be a massive boon to the project if it had some form of posix compliance where things could get ported.
@@detaart There is an SMP module being developed that provides scheduling across all available cores. Tasks must register with the SMP module to declare that it is multi-core aware and is written with threads and atomic variables where necessary as you would expect. The early version is already in the RISC OS Open Git repo, but I believe the developer was waiting for 5.30 to be launched before uploading his newer code from his own local branch (I think). Regardless, I think it will allow newer applications to be written and for existing apps to be modified to make use of the extra cores. Recently, it was mentioned that the zip compressor/decompressor app 'SparkFS' could be enhanced to speed it up significantly using the extra cores. RISC OS does have plenty of problems, but progress is made from time-to-time. I still enjoy using it, and in the end, I think that's all that really matters. I don't care that it won't ever replace Linux or Windows. It's fun to use.
@@WiFiSheep The operating concepts of RiscOS are completely different from pretty much any current OS. The fact that it does not provide memory protection from the different processes plus the lack of Unix-like API and libraries mean that porting anything but the most simple modern software to RiscOS is a non-trivial task (even early versions of the Windows network API provided a very Unix-like environment to developers). The memory protection in particular makes it very difficult to write thread-safe multiprocessor software. You are more likely to see a RiscOS compatibility layer on another OS like Haiku or even Linux before you're likely to see an SMP friendly version of RiscOS. RiscOS is a throw-back to a more simple time. It was very impressive when it was current, but it was very much in the era of Windows 3.1 and other 8/16 bit OS's. The fact that it runs at all on true 32 bit ARM systems (the original ARM was a 24 bit address space, with the other 8 bits of the Program Counter effectively providing the PSW) was a major hurdle, and we can be grateful that the work was done so that we can keep RiscOS alive.
@@detaart it does have some level of posix compliance. Many Unix tools have been ported. Someone is even porting WebKit!!!
Q: what is the difference between an early and a late Pi400? Thanks.
A number of hardware revisions, the main one being the Network Chip for Ethernet and Wireless changed - hence the issue your seeing in my videos. Off the top of my head cant think what the others are, but my 400 has been known to run code slower then other 2nd gen 400s
You were probably trying to connect to the 5g network rather than 2.4 network (the slow connection) which you did on the pi 4, try connecting again on the pi400 using the slow connection.
That's exactly what happened - unclear if that is the reason it worked, but they were connecting the pi400 to channel 36 (5GHz) while they connected the pi4 to channel 11 (2.4GHz)
Can you get rid of the black border around screen?
Yeah it’s just the pis overscan video setting which can be disabled in the config.txt file on the SD card the same way you can on Debian Linux builds
You can expand a beyond 2gb... You need to look at a program called !systemdisc. Granted I know your pretty clued up Tom so maybe you meant out the box it can't be expanded. It's a pain to buy third party software for something so basic. But I brought a copy years ago. So even Rpi model 1b has 32gb cards all working. Anyways hope that helps. Cheers for the vid👍🏻
You've got exactly the same issue i had with my Pi 400, it seems theres an issue with the RISC OS WiFi drivers and certain revisions of the Pi 400. If you turn off WiFi security on your router (Open WiFi), it will work! Though thats not really a long term option as folk wont want to leave their WiFi unsecured! Hopefully will be fixed in a later release. Apparently there's another WiFi stack for RISC OS that works OK, but i havent tried that. Like you said, this should just work out of the box and is not a great advert for RISC OS.
As others have said below; there is a newer release of RISC OS 5.30 (updated mid May 2024), and also a new version of the wi-fi driver too (also mid May). Both of these things should make a big difference to you.
Spoiler Alert... progress has been made, but its not what you think it is.... new update video on its way shortly!
You are not getting a ip address from your dhcp, as am i. You have a 169 address but should be getting a 192. I tried it manually but not workning. I sent an email to them hoping for a solution.
I have been reading up on the forums today, apparently another build of 5.30 is now live which might address this issue, im yet to investigate
Also might see what this dose on a Pi3B & 4B... what hardware are you using?
@@WiFiSheep I have a pi 400, received it yesterday. Been having fun programming Basic, not done that since 1985
@@WiFiSheep Probably some kind of a handshake problem between hardware.
Yes I think that looks to be the consensus
Thankyou for the video...... It helped me a lot
Glad to hear that... I knew when i went though this issue I had to make this video as it would be helpful to so many people!
Hi Tom. So if you have to exclude the networking issues, how do you feel about the update overall? I generally leave my vintage platforms as silos and enjoy the peace and quiet of no internet.
Very good question.... not sure really - networking aside a few issues such as things like Jpeg and FAT format filing support where fixed some time ago, but its other issues like the lack of click and drag text highlighting and universal copy and paste clipboard that stump alot of new or Raspbain users - That a really poor video / media support... That said in other areas it is quite strong the onboard BBC BASIC is also for me been its star quality, that, its speed on slower older ARM chips / Pi boards ... As for the rest of the update for 5.30 ... its not really enough to make me think this is worth talking about at the moment being totally honest. Which I accept is a real shame .
Hi Tom, It may seem frustrating, but as a user of FreeBSD, I am blown away by the progress made by Risc OS... wifi on FreeBSD isn't good, and it isn't good despite a much higher budget - which makes you wonder. The browser issue could be better, that's agreed.... I think the progress so far is pretty good for Risc OS, and isn't this still in Beta?
looks like its missing the gateway address (probably not handling the DHCP protocol correctly). Try a manual entry for the IP config & reboot
Yep thats been bought to my attention. Others seem to be having the issue, strange how all quite it is until I make a much delayed video about it???
Unfortunately I won't be trying on my raspberry pi400, (somehow I feel cheated by the pi foundation because of the chip change and performance boost that gives in some circumstances) I wonder if pi4 would have worked better. I understand your comments ref the beta nightly, but I hope that early issues would be picked up and fixed in there.
Seems rather cumbersome overall
I quite agree, disappointing over all, with a rather limited used case, due to the situation with the sub par web browsers and media handling.
This is super cool, I am not sure if I missed this but if you were to run cubase, can this emulate the dongle?
Im going to guess here as i dont actually know but I would say the software side would run, how well might depend on the Pi board and version your using.... Hardware such as a dongle.... im going to say very unlikely, so i'll at a guess say no to that.
Hi. Is it possible upgrade to 4 gb ram?
I would say unofficially, technically yes, but it would involve the removal of the surface mount RAM IC and replacement with a compatible, which is not for the light hearted and will void any kind of product support to warranty. Hopefully an upgraded version might appear with more RAM at a later date but you'd have to contact Banana Pi directly to ask.
There are a bunch of different esp32's, and the one in the article was a module version, so it could easily be a different CPU than your tested boards....
Hi, are you thinking of attending the tnmoc Econet LAN party again this year?
No, not this year.
lovee my 400
Where did you get the replacement power supply from ?
It was a while ago now, came off Ebay think this is the current listing: (I dont endorse any seller listings and you might find a better or cheaper product elsewhere) www.ebay.co.uk/itm/391143177666?epid=2263145549&itmmeta=01HWNNGRAPQ16SMYQJVADHB2FW&hash=item5b11f33dc2:g:yhsAAOSwLURgOnp0&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAAwEZOpDzmMXm5dwgQ17lWMY2wdE443nz5%2BUCTDl5dnPa3YqB2vvxqPkfC39oydbTznMVCscuJD3GPFadZDAEos42cOKqC2L7wqAD4gqHqA4oV5vj9dzLrhzNkaTBhsUdFt1%2FvUA%2BPjc%2FmdWnVU3rWTeTlTtcEysB%2BxlIVlkdJ9G4G5zRblxNj4CJykkMMYW6chMsO1LyvAOyeyU5oKVYonH3lPBV99qfLlUjL5vs5YsrPNL3us%2BBPZsFQT708mdDBgQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR7qFw7XlYw
Hi, could you help measuring its power consumption, please? It will be very interesting if we can use it on battery powered applications. Cheers
Spec details are here docs.banana-pi.org/en/BPI-M4_Zero/BananaPi_BPI-M4_Zero The Bpi M4 Zero is rated for 5v 3 amp power input. Consumption will depend if your using wi-fi and/or bluetooth on the device. It should run on a little under 4.5v from battery. Alternatively a 9v supply could be used, if first ran though a voltage regulator to generate the 5v line required. Power can also be supplied directly though the GPIO pins, negating the need for any USB C cable interface. Although this method dose bypass any surge protection the device may have.
Ah, since you put this out 4yrs ago running a 3.5inch floppy has been worked out, you can't run an original commodore disc drive 😊 8:57
I was lucky enough to pick up a working one recently, and will be giving it a thorough clean tomorrow. Dust and dog hair mainly. Nice.
Good luck! and well done..... hopfully the battery has not killed it! Many people have come to shows sometimes to show me RISCPCs claiming they work etc I take one look inside and see the green corrosion from the battery...... :-(
Does the BPI-M4 Zero support PXE boot? I want to put one in a very remote location with POE and dont want to ever have to dig it out if i screw up the image.
Hi this might be helpful forum.banana-pi.org/t/banana-pi-network-boot/9913 Out of the box I dont think Bpi does ... but unlike Raspberry Pi Zero or Zero 2 the BPI-M4 Zero dose have onboard NAND flash storage, meaning a bootable linux kernel and files can be loaded directly onto the device removing the need for an SD card which is a common failure point when remote working.
@@WiFiSheep Got it. I'm sure at the very least i could flash a static boot loader to it and just mount a remote file system.
Yeah at a guess that should be doable
Serial monitor changes if touching the pins.

Did you got your bush from Argos?

Thanks for your video. Don't hesitate to contact me if you need more information on BeePi usage.
I am a little confused about the download and unzipping. I downloaded a zip file Beepi-3-Rpi4.zip and extracted it. I got all those *.7z.001 through *.7z.009. I was able to open the archive for .001 which has an IMG file and a PDF file. I am not sure about the rest of the files *.7z.002 though *.7z.009.
Thank you so much for all your work on this project. It's amazing!
The download was split into a number of reference files, most unzippers are able to reassemble the uncompressed file using the sub files. So if you have a .IMG and .PDF file then thats fine, it all worked.
Nice review but just lil qst ( Can we use any other Lcd touch screen like those 7inch hdmi touch screen or some raspberry Hdmi screen with the X1 ??)
Yes via HDMI should be fine, Ive used the X1 with some I have for testing off camera. Touch Screen if via USB interface again can see why what would be an issue might need some drivers or setup on the OS / Windows side. Ribbon based LCD/TFT displays, others should be compatible, most use the same standard interface, it just depends on if the display panel needs its own custom driver board or not.
@@WiFiSheep so we can use those mini hdmi screens with it like nrml monitor thank u i was confused about buying it or raspberry pi 5 just for this reason but its all clear thank u so much
@@moumenebenasser2840 Yes if its a normal HDMI video connection then yes should work fine. I actually have my X1 plugged into an old Apple studio flatscreen display which uses a DVI connection, So i have a super cheap HDMI to DVI adaptor between the X1 and Pro display, and it works fine. As I said i have a number of mini HDMI LCD TFT type displays which work fine with the X1 and well as Pis.
@@WiFiSheep yeah i just wanted to make some diy mini PC and i was confused but thank u bro u r the best 🤝
it looks like a distro of ARAnyM, while the ARAnyM as a VM is very fast, the level of compatibility is still not good. If you want something more compatible, then go for HATARI. And you actually run a MiNT (GNU based) OS over the EmUTOS, something you can run on real ATARI. That is why it is looking "like" Linux.
This includes a transparent Hatari emulation layer for compatibility.
