Marking History Channel is a web series of short historical videos discussing the incredible hidden stories within the thousands of historical highway markers across America. War, music, sports, national events, social change and heroic American figures are some of the topics that are covered.
Photos that Changed the Vietnam War
Many historians agree that there are three photographs from this era which stand out, both because of the shocking nature of their subject matter, and because of the enormous amount of public attention that they received- Eddie Adams' photograph of Vietnam's chief of police, Nguyen Ngoc Loan, shooting a suspected Viet Cong collaborator in the head, taken February 1, 1968; John Filo's image of Mary Ann Vecchio kneeling over the dead body of Jeff Miller from May 4, 1970; and Nick Ut's photo of burn victim Kim Phuc and a group of Vietnamese children running from the cloud of deadly napalm captured on June 8, 1972.
All three photographs won Pulitzer Prizes and were seen by every American who was at all concerned with the War in Vietnam as well as around the globe.

My grandfather (Rear Admiral Louis Perkins) was Munro’s CO on the Hunter Liggett. He lived with us until has passed, and many evenings were spent hearing stories of his time in the Coast Guard. He was so proud of Douglas… I get emotional just thinking of it. God Bless all who serve. ❤️
When I was at Marine boot camp in 1977 I recall that Butler was a Captain in Mexico in 1914.
Not to belittle his achievement of winning two MOHs but at the time the Medal of Honor was THE ONLY medal available not counting “campaign medals”. It wasn’t until WWI and the aftermath that the medals that we are now familiar with were created.
