Backup a QNAP NAS to a Synology NAS
Backup a QNAP NAS to a Synology NAS
In this video I am going to show you how easy it is to backup files from a QNAP NAS to a Synology NAS which are both setup on your local network so that you can have an on site online or on site offline backup of your data.
In this video I am backing up my data from and to Seagate IronWolf drives, these are model ST4000VN006 3TB drives rated for NAS environments.
For your information I am using version 5.2.0.2823 Release Candidate 3 of the QNAP QTS operating system and version 7.2.1-69057 Update 5 of the Synology DSM operating system. However earlier or slightly different versions should work very similar if not the same!
Note that the method in this video just always keeps an up to date copy of the data and does not create different backup versions, however you could always keep different versions by creating more backup tasks (I show you how to create 'Scheduled Tasks' then just select different backup folders to keep different versions.

Thanks Chris and you're welcome, glad you are finding my videos useful 😁
Thanks mate! Very helpful. Keep em coming!
Hello brother, I have a doubt, what would happen if I lose or my yubikey is stolen, it is the only one with which I unlock my KeePassXC base. I was reading the documentation and it suggests me to make a copy of the HMAC secret that is stored in the YubiKey. Is it the same 20 bytes hex. key that you gave in the "generate" button? Could you help me or make a video. Great video by the way:)
Hi, There's some comments here in this thread about copying to another Yubikey. It's best practice to have a 2nd Yubikey in case your 1st one gets lost/stolen/damaged. Yes you copy the HMAC Secret to the 2nd Yubikey which should then give you a duplicate. Follow that when it's generated and then copy and paste to the 2nd Yubikey, then of course test it to make sure it works ok and you're good to go.
Wow. After trying many other methods in vain, this one worked for me. Clearly explained, idiot-proof, worked on first try. Sir, Keep on the good work.
Thanks very much Tristan, glad you found this video easy to follow and of course it worked for you. Thanks very much 🙂👍
Thanks mate!
No problem, you're welcome mate 👍
Great video. So if you've already setup a Yubikey for MFA on different applications, we cannot use the same Yubikey for keypass? Can you please clarify
Thanks Andy, as the Yubikey uses 1 of the 2 HMAC sections on the Yubikey you can still use that along with MFA generation as MFA is stored in a different section of the Yubikey, have a look at this diagram and it will show you where things are stored within a Yubikey - developers.yubico.com/Developer_Program/Guides/yk5features.png There's 2 storage slots as you see, so you can use one of the unused slots to store the generated key for KeePass
Good video Sir !
Thanks Jason 👍Thought I would do something a little different 🙂
How do you create tagged multiple VLANs between dream machine pro to ubiquity switch through sfp ports pls can you show
It's wise not to tag traffic on the SFP ports as normally you would want the traffic between the UDM and USW using the SFP+ port to be untagged so that it allows 'ALL' traffic to pass between the router and switch as the UniFi Network Controller on the UDM would not be able to manage devices. Is there a specific reason why you want to do that ?
What server rack/cabinet is that mate? Looks interesting
Yeah It's a good one, well I like it anyway, it's much better than the one I had previously and it was easy to put together too. Anyway to answer your question it's from rackcabinets.co.uk and it's an 'Orion 12U FS Rack Cabinet 600mm x 600mm'. Hope that helps and you're able to purchase from your location.
Exactly what I needed. I only knew how to block the management page, but couldn't get the internet access pass through. Thank you!
@tyjonesd - Great thanks for letting me know, glad you found this video helpful. Thanks again and there's more Grandstream videos on their way in due course!
Great video
Thank you very much
sit is not aviable. i cant go to the :8123. What changes do i have to make?
I suspect you might have missed one of the steps from my video. If you enter the IP address in the internet browser address bar without ':8123' what happens ? If it loads your NAS page then the IP address is correct. If it does not load your NAS page then you might probably have the wrong IP address or maybe a firewall rule is blocking access, maybe you have it in another VLAN. Also check that the Docker Container for Home Assistant has a green dot against it's name to show it's loaded and running.
great
Thank you 🙂
hey brother, you need to ground something. The hum is painful in this video. There are ways to get rid of this in final cut, resolve, and premier.
Ok, so it's actually the wireless mic kit you're using, so you'll want to change what you're doing with the mic, but still, this is fixable in your editor.
I bet it has more to do with the 3.5mm cable not being plugged in all the way.
@@aliencord8259 The cable is plugged in all the way, I did check that each time I am recording.
@@capnjackcanon I agree the audio isn't the best when I use my Rode Wireless Go II. I might invest in a new one. Audio seems better with my Rode Video Mic II which I use when recording videos on the PC screen. Maybe I'm generating static! No seriously I do agree the audio can be improved and I'm on the case, hopefully you can bare with me for a while as it will be resolved. Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it when it's constructive.😄 I've just remembered I did have the air con running when I filmed this and it could be the background hum from that or interference from it. Like I say I will look in to it for sure!
What a guddle for a box of fresh air & some coloured lights.
Well that's your opinion, it depends on a personal preference I think and how much of a geek one is. Thanks for your comment anyway.
Thanks for putting a DAC cable between UDM and USW. Biggest upgrade. And did you notice that a U-space are always specific holes? You left a ⅓U between the devices. You might want to align your devices some time.
Hi, thanks for the comment re DAC cable. I have always left my devices with 1 hole space between devices to allow extra air flow, it's just a personal preference I think. I personally prefer spaces betwen and I'm not keen on devices being squashed together. But I appreciate your comment/feedback.
@@MrTimTech2022 You have seen that you have two bigger spaces betweent the holes and then a small space between holes? You suppose to align them correctly. And some devices cool better when stacked together. Internal fans will pull the air through it and the air in that 1-hole space that you keep between it will contain still standing air. No extra cooling there. Lot's of people think that way, but it's a misconception. Thanks again for the DAC.
@@petervandebeek5980 I spotted that the space between UNVR and PDU has 2 slots, that's now been changed (PDU moved up 1), so thanks for spotting that. I know there's a gap at the top between UDM SE and shelf but there's a reason for that - future videos. I see what you're saying about the cooling and spaces between or no spaces between. One day I will test with/without spaces and see what temp readings I get. Thanks for the info though, appreciated !
I have also 2 of them since 2 weeks , they are great , the only problem , the mount module are sold out all the time
Yes they are always sold out. I subscribed to the 'In Stock' notifications and as soon as I received the email I had ordered one 3 hours later from the email receipt time.
I have several YubiKeys and they all work fine with KeePassXC long as you copy the secret over. The way I did mine is soon as all the keys are configured and verified to be working I simply not save the secret anywhere as the whole point is to ensure that the YubiKeys are the only way to open your KeePassXC database.
i was looking how to connect the UDM to each switch, the problem is, i have 8Gbit internet speed and i need to use 1 SFP+ on the UDM as WAN connection, than i have only 1 SFP+ left to connect to the USW aggregation, behind that i have also a USW Pro 16 . is it better to go first from UDM to the Aggregation and than to the USW Pro 16, or first to the Pro 16 and than to the Aggregation ?
Hey thanks for your comment. Wow that's certainly a good WAN connection speed. Understood re the UDM connections and that you have it connected to the Aggregation. To answer your question it's always best to connect both your UDM and USW both in to the Aggregation so that the Aggregation sort of acts as a junction box. Then your Aggregation can either route traffic to the UDM or USW depending on where it's going to. Hopefully this makes sense. So to conclude it's best not to daisy chain them in a row. Take care!
@@MrTimTech2022 thanks for your answer Tim, i changed now like you said and it works a little bit smoother now, thanks and i keep watching your channel
Hey, thanks for letting me know, glad it's improved things a little. You're welcome & it's a pleasure to have you as new subscriber👍
why is so hard for consumers to buy these? It seems like they don't want to sell their products except through very small distributers who usually sell to resellers who are in the phone system or specialty markets. CDW was the only "normal" place but they don't have the Grandstream GWN7665. Why do they not want consumer customers and home labbers? Anyone know where to buy the GWN7665 at a reasonable price?
Have you tried www.grandstream.uk which is for OAK Technology based in the UK or the distributer in the UK is BNS Distribution for a web search. Hopefully this helps!
@@MrTimTech2022 Thanks I am in the USA..
@@be-kind00 Ah sorry didn't realise, however I'm sure their must be a distributer in the US. I found this one if it helps - shop.ntsdirect.com/category/45/Grandstream-Distributor.html
excellent guide, congratulations
Hey @stramax07 - Thanks very much indeed 😇
Thanks for the video, no complaints on that. If anyone is thinking of getting these, forget it. Hard to set up and even harder to get them to work on the things you want to protect. If this was a good product it would be plug and play, this key is simply a good idea wrapped in a terrible product. I've seen 10 videos now and can't get this to work with any websites.
Is it possible to store your yaml config files directly in a host DSM folder rather than in the VM? I know they can be accessed using the Samba Share add on, but I'd like to have direct access to them if possible.
Hi @mikesalz, that I'm not sure as I've not tested that, maybe someone here reading these comments might know. Anyone ?
Most annoying thing with Unifi is when the release an official update and it bricks you’re UDM Pro. You need to understand how to SSH and all the rest of it. Somebody needs to make a basic CZcams video on what to do and exactly what to type if this happens.
Thanks for the feedback. Thankfully this has never happened to me (yet 😇) but should it ever do then I will certainly put up a video on how to recover from that kind of disaster. Not sure why your's would be bricked, or hopefully it hasn't !
Thanks for the chapter markers. Looking forward to setup my network from scratch with this guide.
Hey, thanks for the comment. Yeah I try to include them where possible and as many splits as possible so that anyone can jump between sections if they find me talking too much, which I admit sometimes I do lol. Setting up VLANS is coming in the next video in the series, however there's an update to do, so I will do that first so it's on the latest version.

I’m a noob in all this I have cameras on different vlans, keep getting errors or failure to connect
We all learn, so don't worry. I expect you have a firewall rule preventing the VLAN that Home Assistant is on, from communicating with the VLAN that your camera's are on. They would both have to be on the same VLAN or create a firewall rule to allow 'Inter VLAN traffic'. I have done videos on 'UniFi Firewall Rules' to allow inter VLAN traffic, that may help.
Why not use a DAC cable for uplink instead of SFP to Ethernet? Cheaper and lower power usage.
Yes I could, however the DAC cable would still have SFP+ connectors on each end wouldn't it. Plus I have struggled in the past to find a very short DAC cable which looks neat & tidy, I've ended up with excess cable loops with DAC cables, anyone know of very short DAC cable suppliers ?
@@MrTimTech2022 it is SFP+ but it’s passive, meaning less power draw which equals less heat and longer life. Ubiquiti sells a 0.5m for $13(I don’t know the cost there). I’m not saying there is anything wrong with your setup, just that for shorter distances, DAC is the preferred method.
@@John-ml4pr Hey John, yes that's true re power draw & heat. I may well look in to searching for a very short DAC cable, yes I guess that one would do but would be better if I could find one shorter, will certainly have a look around. Thanks for your comment and feedback, appreciated!
The audio is a little poor on this one buddy. Found it difficult to listen to.
@kentish_outdoor2335 - Yes it wasn't up to my usual quality, apologies for this. Hopefully I can improve it on my future vids. So yes I agree and appreciate your constructive comment 😇. I think it was my post editing and maybe interference being next to the cabinet from the wifi mics I used. Will certainly look in to this when on my next recording session!
OH NOOOOOO!!! NOT unifi gear :(.
I guess you're not a fan then 😞? The vids are very popular 😉
Very good tutorial. Could you make a detailed video of how to configure the vlans and firewall rules so that your mobile or other smart devices on default or secure vlan can communicate and operate hue bridge on a IoT vlan? I am really stuck here. That being said I am quite a newbie where it comes to networking. Loving ubiquity gear though.
Hey @tommichalski240 - Thanks for your appreciation and comment. Well in fact I don't normally just do one off videos for 1 person in general... However on this occassion I think this is a very good ideal and would help a lot of people out and also you've asked at the right time as I'm about to do a 'new' series of videos focusing on setting up a unifi network and then configuring firewall rules, VLANS etc and IoT controlls from other VLANS. If you can wait a few weeks I will be getting around to the VLANS and Firewall videos. Hopefully this new series will be useful for you 🙂. And yes I plan on incorporating Philips Hue controls!
@@MrTimTech2022 Fantastic! Surerly can wait. Really appreciate it. This will be a hit!
How do you represent multiple floors? And will the scale compute the z direction as well as x-y? Guess that we can't ask for too much since it is free. Thinking I might show all floors (three) on the same png.
I think you would have to do separate image uploads for the various floors as I don't think you can do multiple floors as they expect an AP to be available on each floor I think
Nice. How do this work when using the RADIUS MAC authentication option?
Maybe check the help section of Ubiquiti. However I may well do an updated video around RADIUS as I'm about to do a new updated video series for UniFi.
Thank you excellent👍
You are very welcome, glad you found it useful !
this process will generate a latency of around 20s in HA with Unifi cameras, I do not recommend it if you need live stream
Agree there is a delay unfortunately, but still useful in some scenarios I suppose.
Thank yo for the video, it was very helpful🎉 😊
Thanks very much, glad it helped
Thanks for that, Tim. Shall try it. Slightly off-topic, but seeing your link is the only one I can find that includes the words 'stop window appearing', is there any chance you can tell me how to stop KpXC's 'detail window' (if that's a good term for it) appearing whenever I click on an entry in my records list? I find I want to see my list of items in a category, and I DON'T want to see the detail/edit panel appear until I want it. KeePass itself doesn't over-help me in this way. I'd just like KpXC to behave in the same way. Any chance? Thanks IA.
From memory I think there is a setting somewhere in KP XC to stop it appearing, have a look through and see what you find.
Another good one, exactly how you do it ! :)
Thanks very much. I should be getting more GWN prods very soon, according to you know who. Might do a guest wifi portal vid next

Thanks Steve, glad it worked for you and was easy to follow.
Good Video Tim !!
Thanks 'J'
Thank you for a nice, clear tutorial. I'll be watching more of your videos. I know this is well past the creation time of the video, but I had a few questions; I figured there would be no harm to ask..... First, for the 4th rule that blocks all inter VLAN traffic, why did you restrict the Source and Destination Address groups to the RFC1918 group and not leave them as Any? Don't all the LAN addresses conform to RFC1918? Since this is an "after" rule, wouldn't you have already allowed all the inter-VLAN traffic you wanted on the entire LAN explicitly in other "before" rules by the time the 4th added rule would match? Perhaps you're building in a way to handle an atypical situation where there is a non-RFC1918 address on the LAN for some reason? Second, when you show the list of all rules at the end, your 4th "after" rule is listed above what I assume are built-in rules. So what does creating a rule with the attribute of "after" actually mean in the context of the entire set of rules? Is it "after" only with respect to user-added rules? Finally, is there a way to give an explicit order to the rules after they are created? And if so, isn't the notion of creating a rule with a before/after attribute merely a convenience at the time of creation since it can be explicitly overridden by adjusting the rule order later?
Hey Mike, to be honest it was quite a while ago when I did this video, as you mention. It's my intention to do an updated one soon too! without giving too much away 😉 From memory I think if you put Any then it will not allow anything through, it seems standard to use the RFC1918 addresses, seems to be the norm so I followed this on. I believe it was after meaning after the set of user created rules. I need to go back and look as my memory is a bit blank for it at the moment lol. Maybe watch my updated video in a few weeks too and it might reveal/answer your questions from this comment 👌👍
Why did you opt to mount the sensor on the moving part of the door rather than the magnet. Personally Zi found this video a little tedious at the start where you go into details such as its being wrapped in packing which we can remove - What really !!! My point is please avoid the need to state the obvious.
Hi @wobbles8983 - I did think that odd about the sensor mounting but that's what other people have done but more to the point the official instructions from Ubiquiti state that's how it should be mounted. It was also an unboxing video as well really, hence the packaging removal. However I do have many other videos that don't have unboxings in them, but thank you for your feedback.
