Performance Max: Use Single Products or Product Groups? (Test Results Analysed)

In this video, I discuss whether you should use a single product in your listing groups for your Google Ads Performance Max campaign or a single product SKU or a product group.
From my experience, I would recommend using product groups over single products in asset groups.
Single-product asset group performance has gone downhill from how effective it used to be.
However, I would be ruthless in the item ID purging you do in this winning product asset group and concentrate on the best-performing item IDs.

    Hi..Do you recommend putting in Audience signals in feed only PMAX or none at all? I have an e-commerce gifts store and I am currently running a PMAX feed only campaign without any additive signals. So I am currently thinking to use gifts & occassions and personalized gifts as Audience signals asking with “people who have visited websites like Etsy and Amazon”. Do you recommend this?

    Hi Josh, great videos thank you. Quick Question about your optimised titles there, as you've made them super long and added in loads of information that would be too long for regular Google Metas and should ordinarilly be picked up and displayed via attributes. Are those long title just something that works for you, or is good for Merch Centre to put more info in the titles? I've had problems with Google complaining about long titles before so I shortened all mine down, cutting out pipes etc but it looks like this could be a way to get some relevent information back in Shopping and out there for customers to see.

    Great video and useful template, I always just dived straight into the Google Ads interface with a similar concept but I can see why it would be more efficient doing it in sheets first and then adding via ads editor. Would be great to see how you handle images and videos and any logic around how these are created etc.

    Hi Josh, Currently we use P.Max as intended by Google and we have 4 separate P.Max campaigns, 1 for each major product type. I am considering trying P.Max Feed only as I do believe focusing on Shopping only will give us better results. I was planning to have P Max (Feed only) x 3 campaigns. High Performers / Mid Performers / Low Performers. My question is, while I am testing this, should I turn off the original P,Max campaigns, otherwise they would be competing against each other / which would drive up costs / reduce effectiveness. Hope you can provide some insight / advice on this.

      With a new Pmax, campaign comes with a 2-week learning phase, depending on ad spend. Where sales don't come through steadily. Therefore, I recommend running them both simultaneously and slowly phasing out the old campaigns once the new ones are up to speed or you are happy with them. The situation isn't ideal, but this prevents a steep dip in sales if you rely on ads significantly. I hope that helps!

      @@Joshinstone For remarketting I am seeing 4-6x and a lift in PMAX and overall sales. Ive never been able to scale PMAX profitably running it solo. It only works for me as a supplemental campaign. The more warm traffic I can feed it the better it does. Going to try these lookalike segments this week. Fingers crossed! If its as good as Facebook then should be a real winner

    We do ok on PMax - My main gripe is Google in all its “smart signal” wisdom, seems to think people only buy our product during the day time - historic and. Current days from Shopify and other platforms ( Amazon / eBay / Etsy ) show us that the evenings are our peak time and always have been - yet even though we know evenings often saved the day and traffic is highest - PMax bids low in the evenings and Smart signals tell us that people are not likely to purchase in the evenings ? Madness !? We know traffic accelerates in the evenings and have always been strong sales performance in the evenings - yet PMax across various campaigns shuts the doors around 6pm and advises that is a “smart” signal ??

    Here, FEED still works very well, but previously it worked very well for me without anything and without a target audience. Currently I only test FEED + target audience, without adding images, texts and all this exclusive stuff.

      @@Joshinstone Yeah I do but to be honest apart from the insight you covered, i.e. 'might be worth trying ads on another channel' I haven't really found a great use for it. As I can't bid higher on one channel over another on Pmax, it's great for awareness of where the budget is going but nothing much else. There aren't many videos on this script or the search terms one so could be something you might consider covering?

    hey, I used to use this method a lot, it was very effective for my online store. Today I tried to create new ads (Pmax feed only) and it didn't work... Google keeps requesting to add assets. Did anything change in the past couple of weeks?

      How many assets is it requesting you to add ? You do need a few in there for it to be an active campaign. Yes I’ve been using very recently and have seen great results but it is hit and miss from client to client

    For 3 & 4, do you actually see PMAX targeting new users by bidding for new customers? Have you verified through the Shopify backend? I've heard that it doesn't actually acquire new users. Instead, you end up paying more for your existing ones. Google Ads Manager may show that you've gained new users, but in reality, you've just bought existing customers.

      Interesting insight. Yes, we are using this right now for a client and recording the NCA (new customer acquisition) directly in Shopify and external analytics (Getklar) . Overall, Shopify analytics can be very off so one thing to bear in mind with what you have heard

    Any match type search keyword that matches the users search exactly takes priority over PMAX. - confirmed by Google. Can supply example. Lots of people getting this muddled.

    Loved the video! Liked and subscribed, I like the way you explain things. I'm running a pmax campaign with only $8 USD/day and it has spent around $160 USD so far (20 days running). I'm running it here in my country, Brazil, so the traffic is much cheaper compared to traditional countries. It's a campaign optimized for sales. To put things into context, the CPM is around $1.2 USD and I have gotten 4134 link clicks with the $160 USD spent. My product is high ticket and the average order value (AOV) is around $150 USD, unfortunatly it seems the traffic I get is absolute garbage even though I set to target only top 10% household income in my audience signals. All time CTR is 3.62%. Have gotten 0 sales so far, only 1 initiate checkout, and I know I have a proven product and landing page as I have sold 20k+ USD via Meta ads. What really drives me crazy about Pmax is that it's not possible to turn off optimized targeting and that I can't know which asset groups are perfoming well (have 3 asset groups all with the same creatives but different audience signals, all 3 of them specified for top 10% household income only)

    Hey Josh! Quick question for you... So, I heard that it's recommended to have about 2 ads per ad group. But here's the thing: if we're doing a ton of keyword research and creating lots of ad groups, wouldn't it take forever to come up with 2 ads and 30 headlines for each ad group?
