Great quick guide. On trial and error- I agree that one needs to feel things out for themselves. What is the best way to do that short of committing $150 each time? I’ve trialed a few sticks before finding my preferred flex…now coming back to dial preference in curve. I had a P28 I enjoyed but was too stiff a flex and I kept dropping passes because of the rocker on the blade. I have been using a P92 that solves that but the blade doesn’t feel as exciting. Wondering about staying with the same blade or going back to the P28.

For 260 ice fly is a 9-3/4 blade revolution blade mounted flush to the toe and heel good? Or would a smaller 9-1/2 blade flush with toe better? FYI I am moving from a 10 blade down now.

I just wish the ice hockey industry made boots where you can adjust the blade position. I supinate with most boots yet after going to 5 top end skate shops, no-one has a simple solution. I tell one of them I need the blades slightly further to the outside and he tells me it's an ankle strength issue. Each ankle can hold my entire weight when I deliberately supinate so I have no strength issue, but I just can't get this through to some of them. They seem to have this one boot is right for everyone mentality. Strange thing is, the blades on most ice hockey skates seem to be biased more towards the inside, and the blade holders clearly have more width on the outer side, thus putting the blade towards the inner side. Perhaps this is because a lot more people pronate, rather than supinate like me. I'm in Australia and my experience has been most of the shop attendants are just hockey players who work there. I wish there was more technical understanding here, like what you have.

My left foot blade is mounted a little too inside I think… I’ve noticed I’m having a hard time not scraping the toe pick anytime I do anything with my left inside edge whether it’s spinning, slaloms, etc… I do pronate a bit but maybe centering it might be best? The right foot blade is more centered and I have no problems with the right foot 🤷‍♀️

Sorry to resurrect this video from the abyss but I’m looking at setting up a tech bench and sharpener for at home. Atlanta skating scene is truly not great, far away pro shops with wonky hours is really a headache trying to keep my daughter ready to go. I was so spoiled at her age living in the Midwest. What sharpener would you recommend under $2k?

Hey just wondering if the skate has leather soles you would have to fill those holes if they are off center when moving the blade? If they’re not too off would you just rescrew the nail into the same hole? I have the same issue and don’t know how to fix it we also don’t have skate techs here. Thanks!

This is hockey skate sharpening question but it’s the same thing. I’m almost afraid to ask this question but what are your thoughts on the Spark or Cag One automated sharpeners? I’m sure don’t the same edge, but are they good enough for doing more light sharpening?

for me, i just bought the cheapest stick my shop had as a teen, a sherwood featherlite with a pp77, things still going strong all these years, the real way to pick a stick is check your bank and hope the shop has something cheap enough

Hey man is it possible to help people with ice hockey skates also? I have horrible pronation and I cannot skate on my outside edges.

Tying body weight to flex is ridiculous. Upper body strength, leverage (height and stick length), and preference will give you the flex you want. Yes, it will take some trial and error and playing experience. Consider a 230 lbs adult beer league player with average upper body strength (doesn't lift at gym). Is he able to bend a 115 flex stick like he would need to in order to benefit from it? No way. That 230 lbs player likely would need a 70 flex. Kids' sticks have less flex because they are weaker ... not because they are lighter. Please stop spreading the "half your body weight" myth. A fat weak kid needs less flex than a lighter, stronger kid. Not more.

How did the manufacturer of the blade expect anybody to sharpen them?

So my Edea overture is mounted flush with the heel… leaving about 0.6mm in the front, should I re-mount them? I am able to do pretty much all the basic stuff but don’t want to develop bad muscle memory, what do you think ? Thanks

My left foot has bad supponation. I bought a pair of hockey skates online because the pro shop didn't have my wide size. The plastic blade holder is riveted in. Do they make hockey skates with screws to fix supponation? If so, can you recommend a brand/model? My left skate is pulling to the left due to my supponation. Thanks in advance.

Tomorrow I will get my Ice Fly Edea with Coronation Ace only with the adjustable screws (since the rink is far from the tech guy I have to go test them moving the blade myself) 😢 Would I be able to attend a 1hs class with only the adjustable screws? Or should I just cancel them until I get all screws placed in? 😢

To find center on Edeas you need to actually measure the whole outer diameter of the boot with calipers at it's widest point, and divide that number by half. You don't just eyeball it like in this video. On my 285 and 290 pairs they measured about 108mm, so it would be 54mm for the center, then make a line based on that, I guess ideally with a laser level or something. But you want that center point figured out, as on both my pairs true center was actually 4-5mm towards the outside edge of the seam stitching. I did find this video helpful though, as it got the gears turning and I contacted the last tech who retired who mounted my old blades and found out this info, and also found the info matched a technical bulletin from SkatesUS about mounting roller frames to Edea with the same advice, down to the part where true center can often be 4-5mm outside of the stitching. With foot pain, too, on my newest pair of Edeas where initially I had the mount done by another tech before DIYing it, it is interesting. I don't think I have any pronation or supination issues, but the tech I had mount based on wrong math using the sole of the skate mounted the blades very inward, and I had a lot of pain from that. With the blades being truly centered and mounted towards the outside like my first pair, no pain again. Interestingly on my box of MK Professional blades they said to mount around the second toe as the ideal spot, which I found weird advice. However, I have a Greek foot, so the second toe is longer than the big toe, and I'm guessing puts more force out in jumps/etc compared to most people. So I think mounting at the third toe and also coincidentally more true to center matches the Greek foot well, so it might be something to consider.

To perm mount, Would you be adding an anchor screw in the heel or can you leave it with the sliders only if there is an anchor in the sole plate?

do ankle sleeves also help with pain on the back side pf the leg? just above the achilles heel. my skates dig in there pretty badly. i literally have a red swollen spot there after 1 hour of skating

Great video😊 I struggle with over pronation, especially on my left foot, but I find it very hard to mount blades on the Edea boots because they have such a narrow bottom.. I’ve tilted mine slightly to the inside, but now the blade is hanging very much outside of the bottom sole. Is this a common problem or is it something to do with the blade?

Great video! Thanks so much for sharing. Why is it bad to have the blade mounted flush with the back of the heel? Or rather what’s the difference vs having it flush with the front? I JUST got new skates for the first time in 20yrs (lol). My old skates are mounted like you said they should be - with the front of the blade meeting the front of the sole on the skate. My new skates are the opposite (the heels are matched boot/blade). so I’m just curious what the difference is and why you suggest they be mounted aligned in the front. Thanks again for ur video!
