And now In 2024 is the remake with two of their rivals Florida vs Edmonton
The Tampa Bay Lightning became the first NHL team in the Southern United States to win Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals ten years after the Houston Rockets became the first NBA team in the Southern United States to win Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
How is it that no other purist hockey fan(s) posted any comments. This game was unbelievable. Everyone can observe just how talented the NYR really were, and how dirty hockey was back then. What is a penalty today is a routine hit in this generation. There were skaters, there were hitters, even in this era. Exciting nonetheless. Tremendously exciting action ❤❤❤❤
Who’s watching this after the Oilers Forced game 7 against the Panthers
ME
1:49:44, 1:59:39 can never forget Josef Vasicek, shall he rest easy
This game was unbelievable. Action, saves, hits, scoring chances. INCREDIBLE ❤❤❤
This game was non stop end to end action. This game was no joke compared to present playoff action. All the thrills, hits, you could ask for and more. GREAT GAME. ❤❤❤❤
The best game I ever attended, sat just behind Boomer Eliason, got his autograph and then overtime winner!!!! No live game will ever come close for me.
‘The parade will follow the usual route.’
Watching these Red Wings is exactly like watching the Florida Panthers of this season and last season (2023-2024), and as a Bruins fan, it makes my stomach turn. A team that refuses to lose is willing to sacrifice anything to win. If an opposing player gets the puck, they know that the opposing team has instantly targeted them and are now closing in to try to hurt them. When you play a team that is so willing to hurt themselves to stop you, and they take the lead, and have elite goaltending on top of that.... you may as well give up because you won't beat them. You absolutely cannot let a team like this get the lead, and just one defensive mistake is all it takes to give them the lead. This is what the Oilers will be facing this year in the finals. They are all going to get hurt badly if they find a way to beat the Panthers. Oilers fans should be praying to give their team strength right about now. You can take these 97 Red Wings against any NHL team today, and they will have a good chance of winning. It's unreal. Look at the freaking legends on the ice here. I blows the mind!
Like I said, the goal at 13:02 in the second. Petit takes his eye off the play to look back at the bench and slowed down, leaving the entire right side of the ice wide open and thus giving McCarty far too much room to move the goalie around. Had he skated his ass off to cover the right side approach, he takes away the option to move the goalie to his other post, and is faced with a low chance shot against a well position goalie with a clean line of sight. Never take your eyes off the play kids!! Never slow your skating while chasing an opponent into your defensive zone.
Gary, Sam Rosen and Howie Rose all nailed this call.
2:17:53 Tikkanen gets tripped, second Devils player sticks stickblade between his feet again to make him lose balance. Haha
Looks like Matteau was hooked as he scored. Even more impressive.
The difference was huge between the old teams vs the new teams 1967- 1971…
Great video quality. I was 16 when this game was played. Great series!
As a Rangers fan, this might be the first time I’ve ever heard Gary Thorne’s call on Matteau’s goal. Sounds like he was a little confused when he said 1940 is history. That would take another seven games to be true.
I remember this I was 14 years old
Looking back on this game as a Canes fan, the most underrated thing from Game 7 to me was the impact Erik Cole had on the game in just his 2nd game back from a broken neck that he suffered not even 3 and a half months before. He got his legs back under him in Game 6, and then was an absolute banshee in Game 7! Didn't register a point, but his defensive play on the boards set up the first goal, he drew the penalty to set up the power play that got the second goal, and was just giving the Oilers D fits the entire time he was on the ice
The thing that amazed to me most about this game and the thing I didn’t know is the fan stood the entire game. I’ve seen people do that for overtime in the playoffs, but never for the entire game. People can say whatever they want about hockey in the south, but we do love our hockey

If it wasn't for that penalty does Coaches Corner ever exist?
Messier, Graves, McTavish, Tikkanen, Lowe, Anderson, Beukeboom … I don’t mean to take anything away from the Rangers but they basically transferred the Edmonton Oilers over to the Rangers to win this cup.
This was a main reason i enjoy and respect and appreciate the Toronto maple leafs of the original six days, they were majestic and tough and won the ganes they needed to win.... something todays maple leafs will never accomplish.... another year another first round exit
Just imagine if the period ending brawl which happened a few minutes later had included Nystrom, Gillies, Wensink & O’Reilly - all were in the dressing room as a result of fighting majors.
The closest Smitty ever got to Lord Stanley. Always burns me.
Wow, things moved slower in those days. Climate change has altered that too I assume.
I find it totally crazy that McTavish was playing without a helmet a few months after I was born. Insanity.
Let’s do it again this year boys. 18 years in the making. LETS GO CANES
Cam Ward, a Carolina legend who deserved so much better than how his last few years went...but my dude, I will never forget what you did, and you remain one of the only two jerseys I own. Thank you my dude!
1:43:27 I really, really hope this does not come back to bite Ward in the ass. These days concussions are rightfully given much more importance, and I would never trade a player's health for a Cup. But I understand his desire, and I hope we bring the franchise their second cup this year!
WOW,don’t make them like that anymore! What a honor to have seen these men play back in the day!The Great White North!A75 year old Chicago Blackhawks fan,Greatest game on Earth!
Great players,Great announcers,I was 15 years old,driving a 1953 ford flathead V8,I bought for 50 bucks,in Chicago,drove it Ohio,the next day,WOW,so many great players,but the announcing is crisp,and hort,and correct!
still hurt...
Can anyone upload game 1 with Lange? Pls
can you do the red wings vs blackhawks on fox sports detroit on december 17 2010? Or on January 22, 2011?
I've never been more nervous watching a game.
23:00 absolutely haunting rendition of “Kashmir” on the organ
Weren't these broadcasts originally in colour?
Yes they were. I worked at CBC for 36 years, and in those days, but the copies are in black and white due to the process they used in those days. I was 11 when this game was played, and began working there in 1984.
did Gary say 1940 is history??
1:45:08 The Canes do it!
Zubie was unbelievable
Essa took the stickers
One of those times in pro sports where the wrong team won.
Brind’Amour and Scott Niedermayer both just took the Cup without giving bettman his photo op! Love it!
Not a lot of people realize this, but Dainius Zubrus played tier 2 Jr. A the year before this. That’s an incredible jump
2:08:28 NOT offside. Linesmen blew the series and probably the Cup for the Devils.
23:55….it took them another 51 years for that to happen lol
First ever NHL game played in June
Someone needs to explain to me if Gary Throne really said 1940 is history after this goal or they decided to dub it in. This series wasn't the Finals so why woud he say that
OT game winner at 1:30:09
5 time All Star "BRIAN PROPP" should be in HOF as he Scored 1000+ Pts in 1000+ Regular Season Games, The HIGHEST Scoring LW in NHL PLAYOFF History (64-84-148) that Won "GOLD" with Team Canada Twice. 2-Way Play resulted in Plus/minus of +298 in Career. IF Guy Carbonneau, Edgar Laprade, Steve Shutt is in HOF then #26 should be too but Original 6 Teams always get players who don't belong in HOF. FLYERS were always the NHL's "BAD BOYS" & get the shit end usually!!!
