As touching as it may seem in the ending, she pulls the plug and hopes to meet him on the “other side” but for robots, the “other side” doesn’t exist. To be immortal would be fun for another few decades, maybe a century or two. But eventually you'd get tired. Sick of seeing the world change in ways you cannot fathom, losing everyone you care about. Watching everything turn to dust. A point will come where you'll realize the only certainty about your immortality is that you're utterly alone. What Portia's character said was absolutely right. We're only tenants of this world and are meant to have a lease on this gift we call life. Eventually the sun must set and night must fall. This is the natural order of things.

This ending never failed to make me cry, even before Mr. Williams passed away. Didn't fail this time, either. This is such a brilliant little sci-fi story, and for all that Robin himself seems to have joked about this movie being a bomb later in life, I'm still grateful to him and those responsible for making it. It's one of my all-time favorites, and a damn good modern take on an Asimov story to boot.
