With the technology we now have to isolate voices or instruments from a full musical recording, I'm sure scratchy recordings like these can be cleaned up considerably if not completely. It would be a great thing to get that done!

I challenge anybody to read the full script of his trial. Yes, there was indeed a great many rent boys between the ages of 14 and 17 who were enjoyed by the famous Mr Wilde and Bowsie. These boys were poor and forced into acts of gross indencency. He was indeed a literary genius and should be remembered but definately not for being a hero of Gay culture. I'm glad he confessed to it all before he died, but the guy was clearly mentally ill. 😢

If you read the court transcripts you will realise it's really about abuse of young teenage boys who were poor and that they were procured, by an older wealthier man not necessarily just about being gay although that was, against the law at the time you all need to read your history before you comment

For the record I don't care what Wilde looked like, or what anyone looks like. However, from a historical standpoint, I'm very interested in Wilde's appearance because all we have is photos of him, and written testimonials of his appearance seem to contradict how he appears in the photos. It feels like Wilde died just too soon to be recorded on film.

The Wilde recording is too detailed, meaning it has a wide range of frequencies, especially high frequencies, which is incompatible with a recording from 1900. It also means the voice was likely recorded close to the speaker, with the speaker speaking at a lower volume than was required for a mechanical recording. Probably, it was done with electrical recording equipment, after 1930 or so.

Nice video / essay. Thanks. I've been fascinated by Wilde for umpteen years. I'd seen the interview with Vyvyan Holland some years ago and then bought his autobiography to see what light it might shine on his dad. It's certainly a fascinating (and very sad) book. I too would love to think that was Oscar in the white suit. And I've s sneaking suspicion that it just might be. I mean look at everybody else dressed head to toe in black! The person in the white suit (and there certainly are photographs of him dressed similarly) just leaps out at you as someone who wanted to be different. Which isn't conclusive, of course. But it is similar to his build (also from contemporary photographs). It's a shame that the quality of the recording is so poor. Cleaning it up some with some basic hiss-removal etc might work wonders. (OK. So if no one else does it, I might be tempted to have a crack myself...) And nice to see there's so many Wilde fans out there!

No. You are completely wrong. You can tell that is without question Wilde in the film. And I will tell you why: his walk. It is exactly as described by Robbie Ross: "He had the gait of an elephant. With a flat measured step." Exactly like man in film. I mean you can see why he said he had the walk of an elephant. YOU. CAN. PLAINLY. SEE. IT. Besides the fact he is dressed all in white and stands out from everyone else. It is Wilde.

If an impersonator was reading the poem, something we would expect because the impersonator wouldn't have memorized this poem, he would have said Goal, not 'Jail'.

I think it’s quite possible he had more of an accent than ever he’d let on...I’m aware he said his Irish accent was something he ‘lost at oxford’ but then how many people are utterly adamant they don’t have an accent yet really, really do. My personal opinion is he probably spoke like a well spoken dubliner but a dubliner none the less
