Tampa Bay Symphony
United States
Registrace 19. 06. 2015
The Tampa Bay Symphony was founded in 1986 as a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation. The 80+ musicians, all of whom are volunteers, come from many walks of life and all ages. Teachers, lawyers, doctors, housewives, and of course, students and retirees are among those represented. In 2012, Mark Sforzini was appointed Music Director and Conductor, replacing Dr. Jack Heller who led the orchestra the previous 25 years. Sforzini is well recognized in the Tampa Bay Community and is also the Artistic Director of the St. Petersburg Opera.
The mission of the Tampa Bay Symphony is to promote interest in classical music in the Tampa Bay area, to encourage and educate youth throughout Florida, to promote the creation of new music and provide a channel for living composers to have their works recognized and performed, to provide an opportunity for qualified volunteer musicians of all ages to perform challenging music and to enhance and enrich the artistic and cultural life of our community.

So beautifull ladies!!!!
here I was thinking that Gershwin created the 1-6-2-5 progression out of thin air. it's right here in the third movement! melody's the same too. I'd thought he went through all the musical possibilities and came up with the sound all by himself. through rigorous, abstract experimenting. guess not.
Reminds me of Porgy and Bess
this is from the wiki page of I Got Rhythm: "The four-note opening riff bears a striking resemblance to the opening melody of the third movement of William Grant Still's Symphony No. 1, "Afro-American." In the 1920s, Still played in the pit orchestra for Shuffle Along, and speculated that Gershwin may have borrowed the melody from his improvisations in the pit, which were later used in his own symphony. In 1987 Still's daughter, Judith Anne Still, wrote in a letter that Gershwin stole the song from her father. '... my father said that Gershwin came to the Negro shows in Harlem to get his inspiration, stealing melodies wholesale from starving minority composers and then passing them off as his own. "I Got Rhythm" was my father's creation, according to Eubie Blake.'"
OK, I'm sorry but the percussion section sucked!!! Off time, sped-up timing, off beat on the down beat. Come on?!?!? Otherwise, a nice tribute to this great African-American composer.
WOW JUST GREAT BRAVO!
TikTok enlightened me about MR. STILL and I was trained in classical piano & voice - all Caucasian. Yet, I am aware of Duke Ellington, Scott Joplin & Phillipa Schuyler, Marian Anderson, etc., but how did Mr. Still's musical genius get overlooked? BRAVO, MAESTRO~✨💝
Brava!
am i the only one wishing there were some black folks playing? lmao...
The syncopation across instrument sections is such a great effect. Like a big stride piano.
I was raised in Houston Tx, and have lived in northwest Arkansas the past 40 years, but TAMPA FLORIDA is the city of my birth and early childhood, so I delight in these videos. Thank you for making them available.
Superbe
I so appreciate this musicianship
William Grant Still is each time more known here In Brazil. Thank you for this magnificent performance that adds blues and spirituals with classical music form. From São Paulo 🇧🇷
Wowwww!😱
My community orchestra is playing this weekend!! ❤️
I've heard this before but can't remember when.
4:40 such beauty!!!!
Splendid performance of a rarely-heard work. It is shameful that W.G. Still is not a familiar American composer.
The kettle-drummer flubbed the beginning. Can't stay on tempo.
Not easy for Pamela. The orchestra seems to be semiprofessional or amateur, mostly to loud, not breathing with the music and the solo violon plays... but she floats well through the beautiful music. 👏

THE BEST
Mesmerizing. Beautiful. Deeply moving. You can’t say more about a composition or performance. Bravo!
John McWhorter of the NYT mentioned Still in his story on Rhapsody in Blue on 2/22/24. I found this marvelous performance and heard Still’s work for the first time. Thank you !
Did knew that the 3rd movement from this piece has a motif that was stolen by Gershwin for his I got rhythm

can’t wait to play this for region orchestra, it sounds fun.
I played this arrangement in the All State band in HS. I have loved it ever since. Few people do it right, though. It needs a lot of punch up front. fff strike on the timpani and bell tones from the brass and a slight pause before the last group of ascending chords at the end and a very big finish. One of the most beautiful arrangements of this song of all time.
Presently studying this composer in musicalogy. Very happy to come across this exceptional recording. Thanks Maestro.
Brilliant and alive.
Wonderful love Gershwin!!

This guy is a great moorish American,., Afro American king
William Grant Still composed five symphonies, this is my favorite. Blues, rhythm, and wonderful melody. Thanks for making this beautiful symphony available. It sounds very good with my Bose earphones.
A very engaging and wonderful piece of music. I appreciate hearing it here. thank you!
❤❤❤❤❤
Very good job, Eunice. 👏👏👏
Spectacular!
Thank you so much Mark, and TBS, for all of the friendship, all of the joy, and the wonderful musical journey that you have allowed me to travel with you!!!! I would do it all again in a heartbeat.
So wonderful to see all you beautiful TBS colleagues. A concert you can all be proud of. The cohesiveness of this performance is so well worth noting. Tip of the hat to Maestro Sforzini and all the members of TBS. As a community orchestra, you excel and continue to show your dedication to an endeavor that is not your primary focus in life, yet is still of the very highest caliber. My heart is full, seeing and hearing all of you again!
I love it😂😂😂😂😅😅😅🎉
Classy music and classy rendition. Bravi!
