MOVING IN to Our Passive Design 🌞 Off-Grid Home #53
Wow!! Amazing!! I have been searching for the best countertop mix and have been undecided between the Quikrete mix and another brand sold on the web. After watching your video I decided to go with the Quikrete as it is more accessible and a little less expensive. Do you mind sharing how many bags did it take? Thanks again for the very informative video.
I’d never use aluminum with concrete. Doesn’t matter what you put on it that aluminum will eventually turn to a white gross material. I see it every day at my job where the aluminum meets concrete. Not to mention it’s a very soft metal and scratches easily. But hey it’s your kitchen not mine.
I wish she’d make a garden for the animals along with an animal trough with a little camera set up to catch the wildlife 💗 😢 We have already destroyed of so much of their land, please make an effort to give back what you can.
@@leahnicole155 I keep water outside of the garden for the animals. We have lots of wildlife here. Right now the animals are enjoying the mesquite beans and the many other plants that grow naturally in the area. 🐰🐝🐍🦉🦌🐢🦎🏜️
Love this video. Great tips thank you. Just moved out here from texas, way different climate and im trying to transform the backyard garden
@@sararunyan Glad it was helpful! Hope you are getting some rain. Things are really starting to green up here. 🌱🏜️😊
This little hut looks simply like a sweltering hot box in summer.
@@johnnynephrite6147 The desert is dry and the nights are cool here. The year round temperatures in our area range from 4°F to 106°F. Without added heating or cooling the inside temperatures of this house range from around 60° to 90°F. With additional heating and cooling the temperatures can be made even more comfortable.
@@RedandAprilOff-Grid did you get that underground cooling system working? why not do an earthship design?
@@johnnynephrite6147 He doesn't have an underground cooling system, and it's doubtful one would work well in our climate. He just wanted something that was as simple as possible. More windows on the south side would have definitely helped heat the home in the winter. We love our solar passive design home. It works much better than we expected. 🏠🏜️
it looks like your drywall and insulation adds up to $7k not $17k from what I see on your sheet.
You forgot the rebar.
@@user-my3ff5lj6m Rebar doesn't keep it from cracking, it just holds it all together. Our soil is very stable and we aren't worried about a few cracks. It's looking good so far.
Maybe it was drying too fast for reasons like: humidity too low, direct sunlight, wooden forms absorbing water, too hot out, blocks were too small to retain moisture, etc.
@@pete4043 It was definitely too finicky for us since we were living in an RV off grid in the desert with winter approaching. We kept the samples covered and damp for a week. The cold temperatures were likely an issue, especially for the Drexel foaming agent.
Completely shading the exterior walls with overhang dimension would knock off a degree or two. In south Louisiana that was the purpose of the wrap around second story balcony/ porches to avoid direct sun on the walls.
Yes, the large overhangs definitely help. They also protect the walls.
Needless to say at this point you all are in Olympic Athlete condition.
@@johnswan9123 😄
Always keep your hand five inches away from the snout of your nail gun. Injected nails happen lightning fast and are painful. Working overhead on your soffit was painful I'm sure after all that wall tamping. God bless you all.
The test blocks seemed to fracture about the same distance to the proportion. Perhaps resorting to a more common brick size would eliminate the fracturing and lay them like bricks. Hat's off to you guys, I'm a contractor in Houston and all that is labor intensive.
@@johnswan9123 These were just test samples to see if we could get a good and consistent product. We were planning to pour the walls in place and add lots of reinforcement. We are very glad we didn't try to build with aircrete. Our house turned out great. 🙂🏜️
Gradient instruction thank you so much and you make it very simplistic
Pouring concrete, without plastic underneath it, is a really bad idea. The sand ground will absorbe the water out of the concrete bottom layer, and because of that it can never become as hard and solid as needed, and will crack easily. Also you pored the concrete without a metal mash or fiber strings. I wouldn`t have done it that way.
We wet the ground. The caliche soil is pretty stable and we aren't worried about a few cracks. It's looking great so far.
This was fantastic! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! 🌱😊🏜️
Ze bestaan nog de vakman, geweldig dat u dit allemaal kan 🙏👌heb met plezier gekeken bedankt 👍
You don't need a mini split in Arizona. When it rains and it's too humid for a mini split the sun is blocked I live in Mesa and my evaporative cooler cools my 2100 ft² two-story house keeps it below 80 all day keeps us chilly at night and I save tons on AC costs
All that thing needs is an evaporative cooler and I would be in heaven
Hi April, I was just thinking about you and Red. I hope you're both well and enjoy your new house. Take care of yourself ❤Peggy❤
Hi Peggy! 😊 Aww, thanks! We are doing great and we are very much enjoying our new house! We are both staying busy with family and various projects. I have been considering sharing some footage of the garden this year, but I haven't decided yet. It's been hot, but the garden and trees are still doing really well this year. We have had very few pests. I'm not sure where all of the cucumber beetles and grasshoppers went, but I'm not missing them. 😄 We got a little rain last month, and hopefully we'll get more soon. ❤️🌱🏜️ April
Getting ready to this myself. Don't have much choice. My double wide is literally collapsing. Thank you for this video.
The house has worked out well for Kyle. Best wishes on your build! 😊
The soil from under trees is leaf mold. Its better from the tall forests. But it contains all the local microbes.
😎 I gathered a lot more this year and the garden is really thriving. 😊🌱🏜️
started this series at #1 and im blown away by the knowledge you have.... I want to build my own living structure and I feel overwhelmed watching your videos. did you have prior experience in all of these fields or did you just do lots of research and learned things as you went? you speak very confidently when explaining whats going on.
We have done a lot of projects and remodeling throughout the years. Red has always enjoyed carpentry, but he doesn't have any training. He only looks things up as a last resort and he prefers to figure out how to do things himself. We enjoyed getting creative with this build and it has all worked out really well. It's a very comfortable house to live in and it suits our needs really well. Thanks for watching!
Im in tonopah. My chip drop was full of pine needles and mesquite seeds. Now i got 70+ mesquite, 50+ sunflowers, watermelons, tons of acorn squash i cant even eat all of it, cucumbers, carrots, and im using sorgum and rye to feed back to the soil. Good luck!
Wow! 😄 We mostly just get mesquite sprouts, and silverleaf nightshade. I pull the mesquite when they first come up. I definitely don't want them growing in my garden. During the monsoon season, I also get little silver mushrooms everywhere. The garden is doing great this year, thanks! 😊🌱
The shower is too small as the angle on the spray will arc farther out then how does it drain?
It's a normal sized shower. The water runs down the walls, and the base is sloped towards the drain. It's working well.
What is the roof pitch? Im starting the framing on my desert cottage this month and im currently planning a 2/12 pitch on my metal roof.
We used R-Panel and did a 1/12 pitch. Best wishes on your build! 😊
@@RedandAprilOff-Grid Hi! Thank you for responding... your chanel has been very cool to watch, I like most of you followers, i enjoy the idea of build nontraditional and building on your own terms. I'm kinda doing the same thing and hope my tiny home comes out as cool as yours. Once again, thank you for your response, I might just go w a 1-12 pitch roof. Any concerns w this pitch since you completed your home. Respectfully.
@@desertmoonlightcottage3387 We haven't had any issues. We used R-Panel and sealed the seams with silicone. 🙂
Wow no rebar, going to have many cracks…..
We added fibers to the concrete. Our soil is pretty stable, it's looking good so far.
Great job
Longevity not longetivity

How deep is the well
280 ft The water level is at 51 feet.
What happened? Used to love these vide
Now that the house and shop are done, we have just been enjoying life. We have been thinking about doing a couple of videos showing a little of what we have been up to on the property, but haven't decided for sure yet. Thanks for checking in. 😊🏜️
i recommend planting some trees from the out side of the garden it'll keep the garden inside a bit cooler and a bit shaded from the hellish sun of the summer like maybe papaya or madras thorn they have delicious fruit maybe even a palo verde you could even plant a prickly pear or a peruvian apple cactus all really good and can survive there
Yes, great idea! I tried a Palo Verde tree and it was doing fantastic, but it froze the last two winters. It has to come out from the roots, so it's more like a bush. We get down into the single digits, so we typically have to select trees that are zone 7 or lower. I have been having good success with Mexican Bird of Paradise. They are fast growing and seem to like our climate and soil. I planted a row of them from seed along the outside of the fence, as well as a desert willow, so hopefully we'll have more shade soon. 🌱😊
That was a very, very hot summer. Even my cacti we’re struggling.
This summer is looking equally hot. Pretty sad for the cactus! 😓🌵I added a little shade over some of my plants this year, and everything is doing really well so far. 🌱🏜️
I had the cutter ants. I ended up digging up the nest and moving it to another location.
Interesting! 😊 We have lots of them on our property. I leave them alone as long as they aren't too close to my fruit trees or garden.
Ahh the challenges of living in the desert 🥴 at least you can get decent soil to work with. I’m in high dry hot 🥵 sandy windy desert in nw Nevada. Seldom get rain ☹️ but have a well. Even have an evap cooler for greenhouse 😆 And shade cloth is a must Your garden is really cute & glad you found some good soil. Have a great day 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Yes, amazingly we have some really great soil here. I added a little shade over a few plants this year, and they seem to appreciate it. It's another really hot summer, but the garden is doing really well. Hope it's going well for you also. Thanks for stopping by. 😊 ❤️🌱😎
@@RedandAprilOff-Grid Yes, my seedlings 🌱 are starting to recover from this crazy weather, thank goodness 😅. I’m keeping some in the greenhouse house…. Just due to over starry lol. Have a great day 🤩👵🏻👩🌾❣️
don't worry . you can compost the powdery mildew
what variety of okra and cucumbers did you grow? thank you
powdery mildew comes from hot days and cool nights btw. what is mesquite soil?

Good job checking the template.
I don’t trust Aircrete to provide protect against Missiles thrown during High Wind Events. That’s why I refuse to use it to construct my Dome.
On my moms window, the channel balancer is all the way up on one side when the window is closed. So its not in the window anymore. Does that mean the spring is damaged or broken? We have yet to take the window apart as both her windows are like this, but one still opens while the other doesn't. The one that still opens, however, is a...its a pain, so she doesnt open it except a few inches. She's afraid she wont be able to close it again. I wanna tinker with both windows, but she's apprehensive because she's a fraid we wont be able to put it back together. Lol

Screed, not screet but good work!
Yes, thanks!
Imagine believing this lying trash lives "off-grid"
Coat the aircrete surface with brushable plaster/Paint slurry: Mix up a bit of white cement, water and sodium silicate (2% by weight), Highly reflective (High SRI) and very durable.
I dry sand it... Not an aggressive sanding, just basically polishing with 400 grit 3M. Wet sanding at that stage of the cure is guaranteed to leave noticeable streaking and swirling in the surface. That may be desirable depending on the look you're going for
The concrete was set up enough that we didn't get any streaking or swirling.
Amazing that you're controlling the thickness by eye. I've seen tile setters lay a mortar bed by setting a 1x3 metal ground to trowel up to. Have you ever thought of making your own earthen floor tile?
Thanks! He was even better at it when he did our son's earthen floor. Here's a video showing how it turned out.czcams.com/video/lMOOA__a6b4/video.html I think earthen tiles would be too brittle. 🙂
