      I currently have a 20" planer and a 12" jointer with upgraded spiral heads and there is no comparison. It's quieter, quicker, better finish, and cheaper to maintain. If you're able to switch anything to spiral, DO IT!

    How much does a helical cutter head cost for an old planer like that? I have an old craftsman from the 60s and if I can upgrade to a helical cutter head, it might live to be 100.

    Nice find and nice work :) I just finished restoring a 110+ yr old jointer on my channel...and found for the smaller parts (or whatever would fit in a container) that evaporust is great to take the initial rust off a lot of parts. I decided that it was not worth it to me to pay $2800 for a custom 8" helical head for it since mine had babbitt bearings...but luckily so far in my initial test, the new blades for the old head in mine work great. I am a fan of helical heads, but could not justify the price given I paid too much for my jointer initially and not needing a lot of jointing for my projects.

      @@Colsch_CraftThanks, hope some of my videos are as enjoyable for you as yours was to me. :) There is a playlist for all the jointer steps, as well as other fun in there for other restorations and wood projects too. I also recommend taking the movable tables off and cleaning off the rust on the precision surfaces they glide on against the main base portion...that way you do not get any future rust jacking which throw off your table alignment, and or if it gets too severe, a crack in one of the main body pieces (which would suck). That was why I always take everything that moves apart and clean it thoroughly. Not only do I then better understand how it all works, but I make sure to avoid any surprises and problems in the future with rust or something not working right.

    You need to band-ratchet strap, or at the very least weight that stack down. Hold it where you want it to be. One bad twisting board can upset your whole stack and telegraph warp throughout.

    Maybe put gutters on and run all downspouts to daylight if you can or dry well far away. I’m not sure how what you did solved your water saturated soil problem under a covered roof? All you did was a superficial cap. Could also make sure ground around your place slopes away.

    They make a material that looks like oversized silt fence in 20ft rolls for thia also. Roll it out with #2 stone rolled then cruahed concrete and lime which ends up hard like concrete. Basically same thing just different materials.

    Nice work! The moisture barrier is going to help a lot. The lime doesnt actually bond to the soil, it bonds to the water in the soil and turns from calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide. This binds some of the water and generates a lot of heat which dries the soil. The calcium hydroxide turns into calcium carbonate which helps the soil to drain in the future! Neat stuff!

  • @aleksastojanov4033
    @aleksastojanov4033 Před 4 měsíci

    Just a tip for removing rust. You can use a angle grinder with wire brush which makes a quick work and doesnt damage the surface. I buy and export woodworking machines from UK and you can get a used working 14 inch planer thicknesser for around $500 there in great condition. This was worth no more than $250 without a motor

    • @Colsch_Craft
      @Colsch_Craft Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah I probably overpaid, but I’m in it for under $800 currently and it’s “working” now so overall, I don’t think it’s a bad investment for a 12” jointer. It was originally listed for $1300 - tried to give them $300 for it but ultimately settled on $400. Thanks for the tips though!
