In about 1995 my old group the Allstonians were playing a gig in Providence, Rhode island and Lynval just happen to be in town. He spotted the sign that said Ska Night and came in. I ended up chatting with him and asked if he'd like to come to Boston the next day to watch footy at my local pub and enjoy a proper fry up. To my surprise he showed up and after the match he came by my apartment and listened to my collection of classic ska and reggae.

He spots ONE Tailgater. On my screen it was completely full of them. About 7 vehicles travelling in the middle and outside lanes doing 60 to 70 plus mph and only a few yards/ metres apart., My god its no wander we have Tailgating accidents if the professionals paid to protect us ie. police and Highway Officers cant see the wood for the trees or anything passed their noses. Tailgating is driving too close to the vehicle in front. Its not a case of following closely and being able to SLOW AND STOP WHEN BRAKES ARE SHOWN BY THE CAR DRIVER IN FRONT AT ALL BUT SOME BELIEVE THAT IT IS. Its being so close that in the event of an emergency or completely stopping of the car and one has insufficient space to stop in and a collision occurs. At 70 mph that being too close could be considered to be anything less than the full stopping distance as recommended in the Highway Code. That being some 315 ft or 100 metres approx. Yes as far as that. Its not just between two vehicle either. In order to avoid a collision tailgating driver may swerve left or right and that may involve other drivers, sometimes over the line and head on with another vehicle. They can involve others in a a catalogue of collisions with deaths and serious injuries resulting. So Tailgaters are in fact the most dangerous drivers out there on our road today. They are a danger not just to themselves and to the vehicle being tailgated but as said to all other road users around them at the time. Read the Highway Code S.126 and just see and learn the distances one should be giving at speeds from 20 to 70 mph. Then drive to those safer distances. Then you would be one of the safest drivers on our roads today. We could dramatically reduce the numbers of collisions, deaths, injuries and cost to the NHS as a result The seriously injured, sick and really ill people can make better use of them and by that suffer less. We would all suffer less. SAFE SPACE SAVES LIVES.

Highways England is only responsible for motorways and some arterial roads in the UK so their stats are only a % of those annually taken on all of our roads. As an example all roads in towns cities, etc do not come under their umbrella and you can possibly imagine that with a plethora of motor vehicles on them just how much we have to imagine just what the true stats from tailgating collisions are.

The tailgater is willfully creating an unsafe situation for the purpose of intimidating the driver in front to go faster. That should be cause for a severe penalty. That 100 fine is not enough.

I was doing 60 in the off side lane, he was about 3 feet off my rear bumper then he got even more impatient and swerved into the nearside lane to get ahead of me, but got held up in the queue. Gave me a dirty look as he passed , I just slowed and laughed at him as I passed him. Also had an illegal 'German style' plate on his crappy old VW. What a kn*b!!

Tail gaters and under takers should get instant bans. Even when approaching exits on the motorway undertaking at 60 and 70mph because you are turning left is wrong. The car you are under cutting might suddenly remember he is turning here too and change lane without looking. And with you undertaking there will be trouble. Overtake on the left only when traffic is moving slowly in lanes. Slowly being ten or fifteen mph or less. Best move you undertakers can make is. Learn how to drive...

    • @MuertoPorDentro512

Extreme tailgating needs to be treated as using a deadly weapon to intimidate someone. The equivalent of pointing a cocked and loaded gun in someone's face. There may be no intention to hurt or kill, but extreme tailgating at high speeds can realistically result in death if the slightest thing goes wrong. The act should result in an immediate licence suspension at minimum.

Yet many drivers do it regardless and don’t give it a second thought. Particularly if they’re driving a larger vehicle, like a van or a Land Rover or something. When that happens, the chances are they want you out their way. It’s bullying. It’s snobbish, arrogant and dangerous. Tailgating a larger vehicle, like a lorry, to get better fuel economy is one thing (as petrol is getting more expensive I am seeing an increasing number of drivers doing it), but tailgating a smaller car when you’re driving a giant Range Rover is just brutal. Drivers guilty of this practice are basically conveying the message that they’re driving a bulldozer and right in their 12 o’clock position is an 8 x 12 foot garden shed. They can obliterate it and its contents.

The Highway Code does actually say to increase the gap between you and the car in front. However, in case I have to suddenly brake anyway, I slow to an idiotic speed. Especially if they get even closer. Got to 15 mph the other day :) after he kept trying to intimidate me into speeding up. He got so close I couldn't see his lights at all, that's when I carefully slowed to 15 mph. He finally buggered off.

Well a massive thanks to sandwell childrens services, I can say that after having first hand dealings with this absolute circus of an organisation...i can completely understand why. And when some of the so called "professionals" within this circus are caught out with facts and evidence to prove their incompetence, the exact evidence which they deliberately ignored and lie in their reports about. A formal complaint is only brushed under the carpet with a "sorry" we will learn from this and do better next time, thanks for telling us that we are absolutely useless but we cant do anything to fix it now.
