Adventures In Reach (AIR) hopes to expand what adventures are possible for you, teach the skills to help make that happen, inspire you to get out of a rut, and increase your confidence outdoors. We encourage you to challenge yourself and try something new, from a backyard adventure to an expedition. Although all outdoor adventures are fair game, AIR generally focuses on small sailboat or Sunfish sailboat sailing and camping, rappelling, knots, ropes, hammock camping, outdoor adventures with dogs, compass orienteering, canoeing, wilderness travel, outdoor gear, camping, hiking, and cold weather camping and survival.

    I found this very useful and helpful. Once while I was hunting I sat down amongst a big stand of white birches and quickly fell asleep. When I woke up everything looked the same white birches everywhere. I checked my compass and didn’t believe it and proceeded to start running (in the wrong direction). Of course I panicked by now. The old brain never did kick in! Amazing how quickly this can happen. Your video would have come in handy if I just would have calmed down and thought for a minute.

I know most manufacturers besides FF and WM are really exaggerating their temp ratings, but I can’t imagine a quilt providing the same warmth…..I also fall asleep and wake up on my back without rolling over so there’s that.

    You are an expert in climbing. I am a professional in teaching: From that perspective this clip is not optimal: Master of all is master of none. There is far too much stuff (intro, credentials, gear, equipment, rope rating, anchor points, repelling) for one clip. Just "anchor points" would have been enough. Second: you need to show what you are doing: so a close up from your perspective with only your voice is the best. A total into the other direction onto your face and body like at 9:58 is suboptimal. 7:31 is even too close: there is no angle which shows the whole setup of the anchors. (If you think the setup with two anchor points is self-explanatory and everybody watching the clip will know that: people with this knowledge are not the primary audience for a "beginner" clip.) This clip teaches us only that repelling with a rope is possible and needs knowledge and material. I would say most of us knew that before watching....

    Joni and I were hiking on a trail in a nature preserve along the NJ shore yesterday. The trail ended up being longer than I had expected, so I did what I do way too often: I took out my phone to check Google maps. Surprise! No cell coverage (which was a bit of a surprise just a few miles south of a large beach resort). In this case there was no real danger. All we had to do was head east for a quarter of a mile or so. The Atlantic Ocean is hard to miss! But it reminded me (once again) of why I used to carry a print out of a Topo chart when 0:09 I want to go exploring, along with a compass. If I had done so I could easily have used a distant water tower and a tall radio tower to get an exact fix on our position. Which would have been convenient, because what I had expected to be a 500 meter walk to the beach ended up being more like a mile. Note: never leave your sling pack with the water bottles, sun screen, and sun tan lotion in the car because “the beach is only 500 meters away!”

    I really don't trust the single twist lock auto locking system. It's almost comically easy to unlock with just a rope dragging across the gate using barely any pressure. Triact is harder to open, but with practice they are fine. Plus, they're fun to play with as a fidget toy.

    Question, is there really any scenario where I’d want to use this knot over the taut line?

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach Před 20 dny

      Yes! I use it all the time to tighten down on things like...tying one end of a rope around a tree to hang a tarp in camp...quickly tying my boat to a dock that doesn't have any cleats...securing the end of a ratchet strap after tightening down my canoe or sailboat to my car/trailer...tying a bunch of grass or bushes together to affix my tarp or tent to... I know a ton of common and specialty knots, but I bet I use the taut line more than anything else. You could use the taught line instead, but that is specifically meant for adjusting vs gripping objects. I hope that helps.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach Před 20 dny

      Yes. That is certainly always a risk. I've trusted some hardware that was left, but metal doesn't degrade like synthetics in the sun and elements. I don't trust any webbing or rope that was left out in a life safety manner. I don't buy any used climbing gear that's soft, and am extremely picky about hardware as well. Knowing the history, care, and condition by paying for new, knowing the source, or sometimes leaving gear (like the two you referenced could have done) is certainly the preference over risking life and limb.

      It was not exactly fun, but I was on a backpacking trail that I have done before. I knew the bugs were bad but didn't realize they were this bad. By the time I was out there and setting up camp, it was approaching evening when they're worse, and I was many miles from my vehicle. This is the only time that i've ever cut my trip short because of insects, and it was honestly more from the numerous ticks I found than from the mosquitoes.

      @@gleytch sometimes mosquitos are just the price you pay in order to get somewhere special. For instance, the barrier islands off the VA Eastern Shore coast are all owned by the nature conservancy and are only accessible by private boat, preferably a kayak or canoe. To get to the ocean beach you generally have to hike through about a quarter mile of mosquito hell. When you get to the beach, though, it’s all worth it! Miles of empty wild beach, all to yourself! No hotels, no bars, no giant pick up trucks. And no mosquitos . Just you, the ocean, and sand. That’s almost unheard of here on the East Coast.

    For me this is a timely video, as we just got home from a week of camping on the Outer Banks. I have a few observations: - my wife is an Italian, and she consumes LOTS of garlic. She is a mosquito magnet. - my father was based in Alaska with the US Air Force in the late 1940s. They dealt with mosquitos by tossing a DDT canister into their tent and then climbing in. He said it worked very well. NOT an approach I would recommend. - there are camp sites along the barrier islands that strongly recommend that you only camp there in Winter due to the number of mosquitos . I’m not convinced that Assateague Island is much colder in January than Minnesota is in May, but the occasional cold snap (around 28 degrees or so) does seem to slow the little blood suckers down for a couple of weeks - I have discovered that if I anchor my kayak (a large tandem) about 100 yards away from shore (and if there is even a whisper of breeze) the mosquitos never find me and I can sleep out in the water in piece. I haven’t tried sleeping overnight in my Sunfish’ cockpit, but if I get ambitious this Fall I might give it a shot. Thanks for another great video!

      I got a kick out of reading this... So add to the list: --DDT tent fumigation before bed --sleeping in a boat instead of your campsite --waiting to camp until winter Love it! I would like to attempt sleeping on the Sunfish...there may still be chances this summer.

    Thanks for making this video and the information. I use mostly Deet. Was unaware that Deet would degrade different types of garments.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach Před měsícem

      Absolutely. It can dissolve nylon, waterproofing, and other thin synthetic materials. It would certainly be a drag to buy expensive equipment then melt it or render it useless when there are other options. If you like Deet, I would recommend treating your clothing with permethrin instead. I put a link in the description to a permethrin spray. You can also make your own and double the concentration.

    Hi, your video was actually very helpful for me as I am considering buying a Sailfish. I’m comparing it to a Barnett 1400 Boat, which has some advantages and some disadvantages. I’m at 240 pound guy, and although I see that your boat can survive with lots of people on it, I’m wondering if you think I would feel stable and secure at my weight on a Sunfish for normal sailing. And wisdom is appreciated!

      I'm about 165. When I add all my camping gear for my longer adventures, like sailing for a week around Isle Royale (czcams.com/video/7FEU5iBxFb0/video.html), that probably adds another 60+ pounds. I've sailed that load many full days in 4-5 foot waves without a problem. The Sunfish is capable and could certainly handle your weight. In high winds, a heavier sailor might be an advantage to counter balance the sail and the lean. In lower winds it could make things more tippy and finicky. I think that quick reflexes are even more important than weight. You might also consider the comfort, clearance below the boom, and whether you want the option of a jib. The Sunfish is a tried and true, which means the boats and parts are everywhere, and generally pretty affordable. The Barnett 1400 looks similar to a Laser with a different sail shape in that it has more space, and more options, yet would likely be more difficult to source parts. In reality, any small, narrow, sit-on-top sailboat is going to be more tippy and less forgiving than a bigger one. That can either be a frustration or a fun and exciting challenge. You'll just have to figure out which it might be for you.

    Seems like nothing works better than Deet, but it does suck crawling into your sleeping bag with bug repellent all over you.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach Před měsícem

      Exactly. Permethrin sprat is better since you can at least take that off before sleeping. I really don't like degrading my outdoor equipment with Deet either. I should really try a Thermacell.

    2:09 - You mean 45 degree angle not 90 huh? ;D

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach Před měsícem

      Hello. 90 degrees is correct. What I was saying is to have your body (especially your legs) perpendicular to the rock face, tree, etc. That gives your feet better grip than being more upright with your weight pushing down at an angle and your feet slipping off.
