Custom DVD-RW Desktop Laser Engraver, Model: 4x DUW1608/ARR (12 pin), 650nm at 187mW, Modified Setup
Here I revisited a red diode from a previous video with an interesting form factor and optical pickup. This is a 12-pin laser diode from an old Class 3B DVD drive and is connected up using the insulated and non-insulated pinout. The diode now has its own power supply and driver.
This stationary setup provides short-range minimum engraving. The diode is heatsinked directly to the aluminum sink with added thermal grease for better heat transfer. As for the lens assembly, I used epoxy for installing the outer aluminum aperture-head and fitted a DVD focusing lens for close range engraving.

I remember growing up and my parents telling me, as a very young child, to.... back away from the screen, don't sit so close to the t.v. and on and on....I can't help but to wonder what effect, if any, it may or may not have had.... makes one think, ... Nice, i would love to play with those diodes if they didnt cost $45+ twenty pieces where i live. Have you tried focusing the laser even more? When you point it at the wall it looks like the light spreads a lot, i dont know how possible it is since i dont have much experience with lasers, but i think it would increase the power a lot.

      Hi, thanks for checking out the new video. I have made a few videos on these cheap bare diodes and I haven't been able to power them on above 40mW, even when focused to the absolute limit. In its current state, the laser is able to poke holes and cut through thin vinyl plastic with relative ease and faint wisps of smoke are observed when pointed against thicker materials. Its nothing that I ain't seen before when working with these diodes. In theory, if I were to swap out the lens with a higher quality one and captured more of the light through a longer aperture might increase the total optical power but probably not by much.

    Hi Joshua! Which goggles were you wearing while making the experiments? Links would be appreciated!

      Hello! Thanks for reaching out. All laser eye gear must come from a reputable and certified source. Do not buy from Amazon or eBay. I'd recommend Thorlabs, Laservision or LaserGlow Technologies. For a project like this, I'd recommend laser safety glasses that cover the near-IR/IR wavelength with an optical density of at least OD 5+. The higher the density the better protection there is. For example, glasses that are made for 780nm-808nm of laser light would suffice. As long as the desired wavelength is covered you'll be safe from harmful radiation. I hope that helps!

    Hey cool page brother I first seen your xbox360 laser diode vid and right away caught my attention, I have an xbox360 laser diode and open can , is it possible to set up the non open can with 2 10ohms resistors, 7805 rectifier, what would be an ideal power output for that?

    • @JHERU
      @JHERU Před rokem

      🙂 Thanks! Appreciate the support. I think you mean the 7805 regulator? Xbox 360 laser diodes are generally quite lower in output power at 5mW max and are good as Class 1M laser pointers. The diodes should only output 650nm red. If you reflect the diode's AR coated lens in the canister at an angle in white light you'll see a bluish tint which is typical of red diodes. I'd recommend a voltage of 8V or a potential thereof at low operating current (20mA-30mA) and go from there. The 7805 driver would work for this and yeah two 10kOhm resistors should be okay, I'd configure them in-series across the P+ pins or in parallel config at a lower voltage.

    Nice laser, could you do a more in depth video on the design of the laser. I would enjoy a walk through video on how to assemble one. Thanks for the video.

      Thanks for the feedback! I can probably pull off a laser build walk through within the next few videos coming up, since I already have a dozen laser diodes and modules on hand. Hopefully my videos have given you at least an idea of where to start and what to expect.

    Cool. Is the colour of this laser in reality the same as it appears on screen? I know it is violet light but it looks so purple (red + blue)

    • @JHERU
      @JHERU Před rokem

      Hi, Matt, thanks for the comment! Indeed, this laser is set to 405nm of visible, violet light. "In optics, violet is a spectral color (referring to the color of different single wavelengths of light), whereas purple is the color of various combinations of red and blue (or violet) light, some of which humans perceive as similar to violet. In common usage, both terms are used to refer to a variety of colors between blue and red in hue.." - Wikipedia Also, check out this link below for more information regarding 'chromaticity coordinates.' www.androidauthority.com/color-accuracy-mobile-devices-part-1-879888/
