The Irish Slavery Question? An Irishman's View...
my name is Dara. I'm a storyteller and guide in Cork city, Ireland.
a lot has been said on the Irish slave question. I thought I'd add my thoughts from Spike Island, the staging area used by the English leader, Cromwell. before transporting Irish men, women and children to the Carribbean to work on the plantations.
I hope this video can add a little background to the debate, and maybe even help historians in their discussions on this question.
in particular I wish to add the three points towards the end of the video. as I thought they might be relevant.
I run the Rebel City Tour in Cork city. Slán go fhoíll.

Father Matthew, known as the 'Apostle of Temperance' in Cork City. Father Matthew got the Irish off the booze - temporarily at least. Born in 1790 in Tipperary, Theobald Matthew (Father Matthew) came to Cork and took the Total Abstinence Society pledge to forsake alcohol. Almost half of the Irish population took the Pledge right along with him. This is the story of Father Matthew, filmed at the...

"Cromwell sent twenty thousand Irish boys and girls into slavery in the Virginian Colonies and the West Indies. (On one or two of the Islands of the West Indies, up to nearly a century ago, it is related, the negroes still spoke Gaelic.) The merchants of Bristol, ever enterprising, and prompt to profit by a good opening, did a brisk business in Irish slaves then and later for the transatlantic markets-entering into formal legal contracts for the worthy purpose. Prendergast in his Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland names four Bristol merchants who were the most active of the slave trading agents." (Ireland's Case - Seumas MacManus - 1918 New York. The Irish Publishing Qt.) "A third group were the Irish. For centuries, Ireland had been something of a special case in English colonial history. From the Anglo-Normans onwards, the Irish were dehumanised, described as savages, so making their murder and displacement appear all the more justified. The colonisation of Ireland provided experience and drive for experiments further afield, not to mention large numbers of workers, coerced, transported or persuaded. Under Oliver Cromwell’s ethnic-cleansing policy in Ireland, unknown numbers of Catholic men, women and children were forcibly transported to the colonies. And it did not end with Cromwell; for at least another hundred years, forced transportation continued as a fact of life in Ireland." (WHITE CARGO The Forgotten History of Britain’s White Slaves in America. by DON JORDAN and MICHAEL WALSH) Greetings from Brazil!

Fantastic work. In the modern political climate it's easy for some to dismiss claims of Irish slavery as racist, but in reality it's a simple fact and should only serve to unify those whose people may have also suffered similar hardships.

Couldn't agree more. Its more about honouring the victims, of all ethnicities, of this period of history.

This is both tragic and enlightening...and slavery still exists today...but we must not forget how many groups of people, Including the Irish, suffered from slavery...
