    I’ve replaced all my tapes with various Fastcaps. They make great tapes. My #1 preference is their 12ft dual scale tape and my #2 is their True32 tape. Their True32 has so much information, it list typically cabinet heights and even where the bottom of uppers should start.

    At work in a machine shop I really like the Stanley 12’ engineering scale. It is imperial but on a .100” scale so I can use the handiness of metric but with common imperial units. At home I really like the true32 and just got the yellow tape

    I use the FastCap Yellow Imperial/Metric, both the 16' and the 12' I keep in the car. I also have for quick measuring rooms, a Harbor Freight laser tape measure. I refuse to use my wife's monster DeWalt 25' tape measure. Love the yellow one as it's set up for cabinet making. Beside the built in pencil sharpener is great for sharpening all those color pencil's my wife gets for her Sunday school class. Just lock the tape measure in the vice, chuck the pencil in my drill and Wha La', sharp pencils.

    Thanks for the overview; I have several of the same tape measures. My go to for a while was the 16 foot Fastcap metric/standard measurement. Fits the bill most of the time. A couple of years ago I saw Rob Cosman using a 5.0 meter/16 foot Tajima and that has become my go to tape. It’s a little smaller/lighter than the Fastcap; is both metric and imperial, nice quality tape, easy to read and has a nice locking lever. I have a number of DeWalt 9’ tapes scattered around the shop (at the table saw, at the Kapex miter, etc for quick access. Also the one I carry to the lumber yard; however it is only imperial. Regards, Bill

    Stanley Fatmax 16 foot for the shop and Stanley Fatmax 25 foot for everything else. I also like my Leica Disto, which has Bluetooth. The Stanleys seem to stand up for years until you leave them out in the rain. I still have my grandfather's Stanley Powermax, but I don't think you can get refills for them anymore - you used to be able to. Absolutely hate metric / Imperial tape measures.

    I use a Fastcap lefty. I know you weren’t doing a quality test, but try pulling the different brands to 12 feet or so, and see if they measure the same. When I do trim work with someone else, we check our tapes for the same measurement at near max length before making any cuts. Different brands can vary more than you think.

    Great vid sedge. One thing though, instead of all the faf with the 1 or 2 mm spacers and all that jigery pockery with the rail, why not just make your doors 4mm bigger and cut down just before painting or finishing. I do this and it feels so much quicker. Cheers from the UK.

    I love the tajima line of tape measures. I have the gold 7.5m one. I am a carpenter, and they are great on the belt as they come with a clip that attaches to your toolbelt. It lets you clip it in and out kinda like a seatbelt and never falls out. I got sick of dropping tapes and damaging them. My second favourite was the stanley fatmax which I found was very durable here in New Zealand where it can be quite wet and can be sandy I could get 6 months out of it.

As an aside a few years ago I went to Fastcap (I live about a 40 minutes drive away) to see if they could tell me how to replace the end hook that I had accidentally ripped off (don't ask). They simply handed me a brand new one. I told them it was my fault, not the tape. They insisted. Good company to do business with.

    For outdoor construction jobs I like the 8 meter, wide bladed, rubber armoured Stanleys with a dual metric/imperial scale. Many of my friends use the 8m Fisco tape because it has class 1 accuracy rather than the Stanley's class 2. For precise indoor work and cabinetry I really like the 5 meter Bahco tapes...they have black on silver scales, which I find easier to read than black on yellow (important as you get older and your eyesight deteriorates!). Also they have a vertical metric scale on the back of the blade which comes in very handy. Another favourite is the Festool/BMI 3 meter tape with internal measuring and circle drawing functions...that really is a handy pocket sized tool.

    My shop is metric only and I use a Hultafors 8-meter Class I steel tape measure. After an expensive mistake using two tape measures in different locations, I only use one now. I also keep a generic 8-meter steel tape measure in the truck for rough measurements.

  • @williamsmith9026
    @williamsmith9026 Před 4 dny

    Currently on the job I have a husky 25 footer. Nothing special but, it works. Currently my pouch is clip oriented that is why I can not use any fastcap I own. Their clip design is by far the most god awful thing I have ever used. It does nothing but detach. I have a couple and want to use them but, can't. Not even to go to the lumberyard because they detach from a pocket easily too. I have the Hultafors Talmeter for metric ( recommended by Extreme woodworker) use for when I make myself the new version of the Paulk Total station. The fact that its in metric has been the reason I have not touched the project yet. In short I check my tapes on a woodpeckers ruler and use what is available at the time. If I'm working with someone I check tapes to be sure we are in sync . If the measurements are off there's usually only one place to place blame. The mirror.
