So I bought this beast yesterday... I'm going to shoot for having it done in a year, we'll see how that goes. Will definitely be alot of learning involved in my first resto job. Not sure if I'm brave or stupid for buying it. Only time will tell.

Just a short vid. I'm sure the angle is trash but hopefully you can tell whats happening. Just showing how to get the SAI plumbing loose from the head. Pain in the ass.
Cummins 12 valve shutoff solenoid bypass, quick easy fix
zhlédnutí 78KPřed 8 lety
Just a quick video showing how I modified my 1996 12 valve to be shut off without having to pop the hood to kill it. Shutoff was broken for months so I finally came up with a cheap solution. Works!
Missing link antique welder. Score.

Picked this up at a bargain last winter from an old timer who was closing up shop locally. Came with all the cords and welding leads and a carbon element arc torch head.

First time renovation and thought this might be helpful to people who haven't done trim work.
What was the piston problem after all?
The dude i bought the truck from lied to me, knew the block was trashed, and I ended up selling it for $700 just to get rid of the pile of shit
Those welders were used in the shipyards during WWll. I've got one that my dad got in 1951 when we first got electricity in rural Montana. They weigh a ton, and have a duty cycle that won't quit. I've always been told the missing link, (some Mid States don't have it), was an arc stabilizer. Just what I've heard, not saying it's gospel. It's my go to welder.
I have the same welder and made a video in recent years on it...czcams.com/video/l4je9lowQj4/video.html
Go to Napa and get a choke cable witha knob. You need stiff wire not that cable shit. Thats is trash
Was the actual plumbing twisting on you when you were loosening it?
I don't think so. It's hard for me to remember back that far. The nut came loose just fine after I was able to stop the inner fitting from turning.
It was extremely helpful. Thank you.
I just bought a welder similar to the one that was showed are they good welders
Yeah i loved that old welder, unfortunately I didn't have room for it or an electrical connection at the house i rent so i sold it a few years back. Wish i hadn't.
I see so many vids of people messing around with fuel shutoff solenoid idk why everyone wouldn’t just do this thx for your vid I’m swapping my Cummins in my Chevy and I’ll definitely be doing this
You could even run it through your dashboard if you wanted to haha. I just put it in the easiest place possible.
The way that solenoid is designed is pretty dumb to begin with anyway. And with it being a manual pump it kind of made more sense to me to just bypass the electronics.
Or just dump the clutch with the brakes on.
Mine was an automatic....
That wears your syncros
@@midwestoenr4905 Forgive me for my ignorance, but how would that wear the synchros if you're already in gear? Wouldn't the shift forks not be pressing on them? Every mechanic I've spoken to says that stalling, which is essentially what I'm talking about, doesn't hurt the vehicle one bit, but anyone can be wrong, even pros.
Thank you
I have a 12 valve Cummins and it won’t crank, it has new batteries and a new starter but still won’t crank
Make sure you have power at the starter. I'd probe the power feed wire with a test probe while someone inside is turning the key. If you do, your new starter might be bad. If you dont, you either have a break somewhere in your power supply cable (I've had that happen on a cummins) or you probably have a bad ignition switch.
@@bargainbear1483 how do I test if I have a bad ignition switch, I got my starter from extreme diesel and I hear it working
@@hazzurs so is the starter actually spinning? Because if it's spinning but not doing anything, you're missing teeth on your flexplate.
@@hazzurs I guess I should ask, do you just hear the starter solenoid click or can you actually hear the starter spinning?
@@bargainbear1483 when I turn the key to turn it on I hear a click or some noise every time I try turning it on
I’m looking to replace the injections on my 03 Disco without the pipes. Is it easy to remove? And do you suggest throwing new gaskets on the new injections ?
I’m use to a 4bt so I couldn’t find it on a my friends 6bt he let me drive and the battery died! I was under the truck looking for it! Haha! Thanks
Starlink
It helped me, thanks!
Wow dude, you don’t understand! You just saved my life!!! Finally got the fucker off! Mine was on tight, had to really pull hard on the wrench but it worked perfectly. Thank you.
I have an 02 Disco II how would I go about plugging the wholes in head after the pipe removal, I live in a no emissions county in Oregon don't need it
It might be a stretch, but you might be able to find big enough bolts with the same thread that you could just thread into those holes after taking the smog pipes off. Other than that I'm not too sure what would work the best.
So its running away and how do get down there
Sorry i don't quite understand the question..
@@bargainbear1483 what's so hard ,,you have it on The floor it very simple
I recently bought a 96 Dodge dually with a 5.9 ltr engine. Had the same problem. Went to a salvage yard and bought a used fuel shut off solenoid for 55$. Installed it and had the same issue. It has to be the inline fuse wire.
It was helpful but really cloudy vid
Yeah, took it outside at night with a camera phone 💁
That was a huge help sir and thanks a million for posting the video. I have held back from removing the secondary air from fear of breaking it off. You da man thanks.
Another option is to rig it up the same way you do here but use a choke cable. I used the Edelbrock brand cable and it has a clean look to it and is just mounted on the lower left of my dash by my off road light switches. It looks clean and I can take the keys out and let my truck warm up or stay running in the winter without worrying about someone stealing it or a kid putting it in gear.
300 AMP can be carbon torch, scarfing, and resurfacing hard faces on plow and scraper blades, grader blades and such. It was during a time of growth after WWII US manufacturing was slowly winding down from the war effort. Also, the US was still supported very heavily by small farm America and stuff had to get done. The US as well as the World has populated to unreal numbers as well as technology. You can now buy a welder that will do all this thing did and it will be the size of a large car battery as well as an inverter.
Still have the truck?
Regular cab dually🤘🙌
Yeah i sold it... I miss it though haha
@@bargainbear1483 I found a regular cab dually recently...now sits my 69 bump side cab on it. should be on the road in a few weeks. Thanks to your vid I now know how Im going to incorporate a kill cable to my factory Ford gasser choke pull handle. Thanks dude
$250_00!!!! Are you sure that wasn't built by Mahindra?
Please post a video of this in use!
Who the hell would use this welder to weld a trailer.
And what you pay for it
People used machines like this for decades and it worked quite well.
oh yeah!!! ha ha!
love the sony xplod beeping
😂 close. It's actually a pioneer.
*Update* so at the time of this video, I was unaware that this shutoff was available on amazon for $30. They are expensive as a dealer item, but cheap on amazon. I would either do this as a temporary fix or shut it off by hand by opening the hood and manually doing it until the new one came. Unless you just like feeling like you're driving an old manual shutoff tractor, in which case, this is the way to go 😊
Do you have a link for the one available on Amazon?
Cool man. Doin this today. Thanks for the vid.
Hey Justin, I also live in Peoria NW of you. Did you ever get your rover up and running?
Dave Jones haha no, I sure didn't. Turned out, the guy I bought it from lied to me about the engine. He had replaced the head gaskets, and in the process, over-torqued one of the bolts and ruined the block. Ended up selling it as is for $600 because I was moving back to Indiana. Needless to say, I will never own another one.
Ah man bummer! Yeah they’re a handful to maintain and I also have an 03 Disco and am having some SAI pump problems. Like ur trick for loosening that air injector line. I have a P1415 code only so something’s amiss on the pump side of the engine. Love these trucks as there’s nothing really like them out there, but darn the British for their reliability! LOL
Hey, if it works why not.
We're the hell can I get the lead connectors for these welders I can't find them anymore
Chirs Burkett good luck man... You'd probably have to cast your own out of copper or something and figure out a way to attach it to your cable?
Lenco still makes machine plugs(NOT Miller plugs). I just bought some for less than $8 each from weldingsupply. That being said, those may be even larger than machine plugs. If they are, take an old one to a local machine shop and have them duplicate it from a suitable brass alloy.
What is the difference between a secondary air injection head and a non secondary air injection head..? I swapped over a 2001 4.0 non secondary air injection into my 2003 which is a secondary air injection and the only thing that I swapped over from the 2003 block to 2001 was the intake manifold and then I blocked off all the lines for the secondary air injection and now I'm getting a popping noise in the intake manifold. do you know what could be causing this... And thanks in advance
jorge pizarro so it's been a few months and that rover ended up having a trashed block 😒 honestly that sounds like a head gasket to me. I realize you said you just put those heads on but trust me when i say those engine blocks were total garbage. What torquing sequence did you use? And did you use a digital torque wrench?
Justin K yes I did
Similar to my old Forney, but why does it have the separate box on top?? My Forney is just 1 big box. Thanks, take care from Tn.
lee isenberg the seperate box is for DC welding, it helped the rookie shipyard welders pick up on the skill of arcing more quickly.
If it says “the missing link” it’s a high frequency box for tig welding aluminum
I thought mine was old.Love the M layout.Way to Cool.
They sure don't make them like they used to
Have a old 230 amp portable Sears and Roebuck Company Welder Model #11320780.Was wondering what it's worth.Sears no longer sales replacement parts for this model.
there so much room for activities under the hood! love it!
Good ta know if i get in a jam and i need ta make it run. thanks!
SnakePliscan2 itll shut it off not make it run
0:25 i think your talking about my video, haha and yeah mine only goes to 150A. you may need 300A for an arc torch or something not used anymore.
yeah I can't remember if I mentioned in the video that it came with an arc torch... it did though. haven't used it. I don't have any carbon rods large enough for it.
300 amps would be for very large rod, 1/4" diameter or larger. Alternatively, it could be used for carbon arc gouging if one had a gouging torch and a large enough air compressor.
Welders usually don’t work all that well at their highest settings, and the duty cycle is low. You don’t buy a welder that’s maxed out at 100 amps if you plan to weld at 100 amps.
