2024 SR-71 Blackbird Airpark - Palmdale California
This is the third time I've been here but this is the first time it is open. The other times have been weekdays and this museum is only open on weekends. It's still worth coming here 24/7 because these rare and special aircraft can be seen quite well from the sidewalk outside the fence. In fact you can continue around the corned and head west along the fence line of the much larger museum next door - The Joe Davies Heritage Airpark - formerly the Palmdale Plant 42 Museum.
Blackbird Airpark is home to three very special vintage Lockheed airplanes that still belong to the USAF. They're on loan to the Edwards AFB Flight Test Museum. Flight Test is in the process of constructing a huge new museum at Edwards AFB West Gate. I'm not sure if they are going to move these birds over there but I hope so. It would get them out of the weather. They are currently outside in direct sunlight and it is taking its toll. Priceless airplanes should be kept indoors.
The first and definitely the most special is the Lockheed A-12 prototype #60-6924. This is the first airplane in the Blackbird family, before it was called the blackbird. This airplane flew 332 times for a total of 418 hours. It was only used for flight test and I am amazed that it survived. A lot of stuff had to be figured out with this airframe including the camera systems.
Also present is a veteran SR-71A model serial # 61-7973. This is a combat aircraft that flew many missions. She was retired in July 1987 after an accident at Middenhall England with at total of 1730 hours on her.
The U2 on display is an early model serial # 56-6721. It was the 28th U2 built and it was an A model. It was damaged when it was one year old by a belly landing and Lockheed rebuilt her as a two seat D model. Today she is the only surviving D model. I could look at these planes every day, I'm sure I'll be back.

I'm at the Paul Allen collection at the Flying Heritage and Combat Armor Museum in Everett Washington in late 2023. This museum gallantly endeavours to operate as much of its inventory as possible. I came to see this plane in 2020. I was the only person at the museum that day lol. Drove from San francisco, over the top of mount hamilton past the lick observatory and down the other side to go see it. Right after the wildfires, everything was deserted. Amazing museum. Couldn't believe the aircraft they had there mouldering out in the sun. Im from the UK originally and we have some awesome aircraft museums there, but to see a B-36, B-52, B-47, B-58, B-29, B-50, B-17s, a b-25 an SR-71, a d-20 drone, all in one place... AND an Avro Vulcan. Castle has a phenomenal collection. Wish it was indoors but I can see why that would be a bit costly with that collection...

I wish it was indoors too but imagine the cost. It would have to be moved closer to the i5 or a big city to afford it. Have you ever been to the McMinnville Museum? Always deserted because it is too far from anything. If it was next to the i5 it would be full of people. Thanks for the comment.

One of these massive bombers crashed in Newfoundland in 1953. They were flying a mission to test if enemy aircraft could fly undetected into North American airspace. After crossing the Atlantic from the Canary Islands, in adverse weather conditions the plane crashed on a barren hilltop on the east coast of the island of Newfoundland. General Richard Ellsworth along with all 22 crew members were killed. Planes were sent out from The United States Air Force Base at Stephenville to search for the downed bomber, but one of them, a B29, was also lost and never found. For more information on this crash search Burgoyne's Cove B-36 crash.

I got to see one in flight in 1980. I was based at NAS/NATTC Memphis, TN when one flew into the base while I was walking back from town. At first, I thought it was a Tomcat flying over, but then I saw it had a single tail. Shortly after it arrived, it was converted to a static display across from the chow hall. The last time I looked on Google Maps, the Vigilante was still there. The A-5 entered the fleet in 1961. Its original mission was to be a high-speed sea-based strategic bomber capable of carrying nukes. The bombs at the time of its development were still quite large and heavy, so a big airframe was needed to accommodate them. Because of a change of policy that relied more on submarine-based strategic weapons at the time of its service, the A-5 became redundant. Its mission then became that of a high-speed reconnaissance aircraft, being redesignated as the RA-5 in 1963. The one I saw in Tennessee, BuNo 156608, was the last operational example, formerly based on the USS Ranger with RVAH-7. Its final deployment was aboard Ranger in 1979. RVAH stands for Reconnaissance Fixed-wing Attack, Heavy.

One of the sleekest jets in the military of all time. The A-5 was based at NAS Albany (GA) in the late 60s & early 70s. As an early teenager, I saw them (& other jests) frequently; they looked so aerodynamic & fast. Very common to hear the sound barrier being broken back then, too. My family house had 6 large windows that vibrated heavily when this happened. The base closed shortly after the VN war ended. So few NAS's left these days. Sad.

Just walking up to it and realizing you were going to get to fly it was a great feeling. The climb rate of the 24E without the weight of the fuselage tank was spectacular. @@flyerbob124 Any stored aircraft will have to be gone through for liability/safety reasons. The days of waking up a long-stored radial - are long gone - regardless of maintenance. But insinuating it's the condition of the aircraft is simply wrong. That may or may not cost $.

Pogo Wheels out on the ends of the wings of the B-52 are there because the wind is droop especially when it's full of fuel that actually keeps the wind keeps from hitting the ground when it's full

I worked at LockMart in Fort Worth when N911NA landed at Carswell with Endeavour on top for an overnite stay. (2009) LM distributed multiple pictures to employees. but I got to walk up close to a Shuttle and a NASA 747.

If the B-52 wing was full of fuel, the wing would bend and the outrigger gear would touch touch the ground. The missile next to it is a Hound dog nuclear cruise missile.

I had to look that up. Apparently B-52's have had several different wings in their long lifetime. There is not much on the current B-52's that is original. The early 1950's aircraft had their fuel in a series of fuselage tanks. Later a new wet wing was designed and the G model has 6 large wet sections adding 38,000 lbs of go juice.
