    Did I miss you telling us about the importance of age on a rug?? Is it more valuable if the rug is older for the fact of age and being in good shape ? Should a new rug of equal size and quality cost less than an antique rug ?

    Many very fine quality rugs are not used for walking over them. We have some under the glass coffee table, on the wall, on the tables, couch, or parts of the house that don't have traffic. As they are very fine n high quality, there is none of the signs you mentioned on them. How do you know if they are 100, 300, or 50 years old, considering, their very traditional pattern n material? Thank you.

    To my eye, the completely flat colors, uniform back, and crude drawing indicate a mediocre rug of recent manufacture. I’m not convinced it is silk but perhaps mercerized cotton.

    Excellent description of how to determine the age of rugs. I have bought handmade rugs for over fifty years, at first new ones, then older ones. Interestingly, the fifty-year-old rugs barely show age at all. A professional washing every several years makes them sparkle. I have also had good-quality, machine-made , wall-to-wall carpets that barely lasted a dozen years. I later acquired vintage rugs, whose mellow colors I appreciate. Of course, the best way to determine age is to be acquainted with thousands of rugs of many different ages, as confirmed by the Catalina dealer.

      Thank you for sharing your experience! It’s fantastic to hear about your journey with handmade and vintage rugs. Your insights on their durability and the value of professional washing are spot on. Vintage rugs indeed have a charm that machine-made carpets can’t match.

    Greetings from Texas, Shawn. Good to see you. The 150 yo silk rug is indeed a treasure. It is fascinating to me how Oriental patterns resemble Native American designs, imo. And how natural dyes last for decades. I was at a furniture store recently where I marveled for some time with the beauty of carpets...even the man-made! Thanks for the tutorial.

    This is a very informative and very nicely done segment. Didn't realize that Hriz (my preferred design) is third generation cousin of Bakhshayesh and Serapi. It would be nice to see films on the evolution of the other patterns. Placing the evolution of designs in the family groups makes the process of understanding Persian rugs much easier.

    • @CatalinaRug
      @CatalinaRug Před 12 dny

      Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed the segment and found it informative. It’s fascinating how designs like Heriz are connected to Bakhshayesh and Serapi. We’ll definitely consider creating more videos on the evolution of other patterns to further explore these family groups. Thanks for your suggestion

    Is the thickness of the wool yarn in rug wiving somehow regulated? It would be logical that, with the thinner yarn, you should be able to weave more detailed wool rugs. I don't believe that I have ever seen such rugs. Is cashmere ever used in rug wiving?
