Squint and it's mint
Thailand
Registrace 14. 10. 2021
Fixing and restoring the cars I grew up with.
Sharing my knowledge whether it be something I've just learned or I've been doing for years.
A journal documenting the work on our project cars. Mainly old British Fords but some BMW's and some DIY tooling.
Inspired by other 'Tubers' we thought it would be good to share what we have learned as we put it into practice.
Having worked on cars for 35 years we found ourselves now doing almost everything ourselves we are continually learning and up-skilling and are finding that by shooting what we do we improve our standards and plan better our execution.
Like anything, there are many different ways of doing things we hope you enjoy our approach, it may not necessarily be the way you would do it but if you squint, it's mint 😛

Am I out of my depth repairing this E30 bonnet? | BMW E30 Part 1
For various reasons we haven't been doing much in the way of videos recently (read "effort outweighs gain" and "concentrate on day job"). But anyway here is a video of complex repair to the e30's bonnet/hood inner skin.
Like many of these rust repairs there is more to it than square patch pieces with 90 degree bends and I'm actually really pleased how this eventually turned out.

Great job on repair panels turned out well in end. TiG weld looked good a weld never done myself. One day mite have a go with a TiG
Cheers. TIG is good for stuff that you can get a really good fit on. Wouldn't bother with it for floors and stuff but seems OK for stuff on the visible surfaces.
Hi there. So you have been practicing butt-welds with your TIG? Nice. I have only had the chance to use my TIG once so far. It's certainly interesting. I'll be watching! :)
Hey buddy. Don't think I'm going to use it much but good to know I can do it if needed. Have tge new MIG now.
@@Squintanditsmint Well I thought you had a MIG now. Best of luck with the hood but I suppose by now you have it all painted. ;)
Yes, have MIG now. This video was actually done quite some time ago, things have got a lot worse since this scratch of the surface.
yow bro i had every faith in you doing another good job loved how you tried to get the centre off the hole, the birds were singing your praise ,whats yous being up too,👀👀🍻🍻
It didn't start well but we all know it's the end result that matters. I've been plugging away at this old beemer, it turned out quite bad and is very involved..... redoing old repairs
Iam tired 😂😂😂 your going to be when you have rubbed it 😊
😁
Good fun and interesting video cheers lads
Cheers, it was a fun day
Looking good! Just a tip, try to enunciate words more. Pretend you're speaking to an audience and project and enunciate your words, and get a better microphones setup. Looking forward to more. These cars are amazing.
Thanks. I'm a mumbling old fool. Recorded on an old gopro with no external mic facilities. New kit costs and we don't got the budget.
good work
Thanks, and thanks for subscribing.
Wow. I was part of the <200 who watched the 2nd video and you didn't even have to pay me to! ;) Me not being an Audi guy, I've never heard of the "world famous ufo brakes". Sure looksout of this world. It's a darned good thing you have a little bit of experience with brakes. ;)
Legend! I'll definitly be doing an indepth video on the brakes. The discs are too worn, I hope I can get repplacements.
@@Squintanditsmint With your connections I expect that you can find some but at what cost... "regular" parts are crazy money now. Parts from a UFO might be lots more. ;)
Everyday is school day, never seen brakes like that.... surely no problem for ebc man. 😊
The only issues I face with the brakes is disc availability. I already have pads.
hi im thinking its not a ford,,,,🤣🤣is that the bmw behind you,,that you painted off camera ,whats the plans r you going racing agian,,👊👊 what did you do with your bottles,,,,
Right. It's not a Ford. It falls into the "other" brands that have the odd legendary model (S4 Quattro) with 5cly Turbo. I'm still doing the BMW. I'm putting in a new floor and actually doing a video. Nowhere near paint yet.
What a decent little find lads. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one 👍👍
Thanks mate. It's another unusual one, feels a bit posh though, may have to buy some new trainers 🤣🤣🤣
Good progress on the Audi Gav , she will be running sweet one you fit your new wires etc 👍🏻
Slow progress, taking my time, no rush but good to get where we are. Cheers
Great progress Gav. She's a runner and sound sweet plenty of rat poo as usual. Probably your wife thinks it's a mates cars as to modern for one of your projects.
Cheers mate. It's not as modern as you might think, 1993. The Saph was made in 92 and e30 89. Its a little more complicated though.
"Pro Animal". Isn't marketing interesting? I expect she has found out by now.. if not then the cars are all starting to look the same to her or she has given in to your (and the boys) addiction. ;)
I've never worked out how it's pro animal but its reassuring. Wife has stood by it a couple of times and looked at it briefly but said nothing. I think she doesn't care.
@@Squintanditsmint Then you have what many people want in life. :)
@Joe.Doucette good point
Rev it till it runs "It ain't got no gas"
It had gas, I'd put 10 litres in it. I'm not a fan if running of an aerosol but they were trying to sell it. Stay tuned, things get better.
Nice find 🤩 Wife's always ''enjoy'' the we buy cars...🤣😘🤣
Do we have to tell them everything. She doesn't come home saying look dear I've just bought some make-up.
Nice to see you back with a great project Gav , hope you are well mate 👍🏻
All good thanks mate. Same for you as well I hope. Cheers
hi yes can you give a update on the mk2 is it up and runing again after you stool part of for the sierra .😂😂🍻🍻
Sorry mate, not done yet but it's in the queue.
Howdy! Will this be another complete teardown or a repair and use? Good luck with hiding it for very long. ;)
So far we haven't found anything that needs welding so I'm going to sort it mechanically and use until we've time to paint it. She still doesn't know and it's been a few months. Do a reveal when we take it out for the first time.
@@Squintanditsmint No welding? Ah well. You will have to practice your tig welding elsewhere. ;) Wow... she must avoid your garage like my wife does. Cool!
I've plenty of other places to weld and also have mig capabilities again.
@@Squintanditsmint There are always things to weld. ;) Nice to have your MIG back, I bet.
@@Joe.Doucette it's a different one but yes, good to have it.
good to see you back at it on the spanners with a new project 👍
Cheers. Not really been away from the spanners just not been producing. Some other stuff coming.
Thanks for the vid. I have had Mk1 and Mk2 different years from 69 to 80, I have never seen a scuttle spot welded on. Only ever seen 4 self tappers at the top and 5 pop rivets at the bottom, that's here is Australia. Also I have never seen a blank where the heater fan should be. Interesting.. what year is that car?
In contrast I've never seen an original one with screws and rivets. The Thai ones were all made from kits that came from UK and the ones I messed with back when were all UK ones. Interesting Australian ones are different.
Nice idea
Thank you! Cheers!
What engine is in the car ?
2.0 Duratec + MT 6 from MX5 NC
It's a 2.0 Duratec VVT from a Mazda mx5 nc with 6 speed manual
hi bro whats being going on looking forward to another vid why dont you do one about the capri build,,🍻🍻hows the project going with the beer bottles,,
Hello mate. I'm doing a paint job on am e30 at the moment with little content of interest. I'm sure we'll be back sooner or later when we start another project.
Rotiform DTM very nice choice of wheel
Thanks. Original choice was Compomotive TH but they were painful to deal with. Glad we went Rotiform now.
What is the budget on this build ? you are inspiring me to restart my project!
I haven't added it up yet but there was a few big buys (engine, ecu, wheels, body kit) obviously no labour. I may do a video on how much it cost
hi great vid,,have got the mk2 back to good health yet ???? cheers chris,oh have you fitted the clip on sills yet,,,
How did you watch an hour video in 20 minutes 😂😂😂 Yes, sills all done. No escort, yet.
hi whats mate long time no video,,,,
Not much happening at the moment my friend but keep a look out for a video over the next few days.
Nice work mate , you should feel a difference now when your driving the saph ❤
Yeah it coming on well. May need some softer springs for the front though.
All good fun then Gav lol on the bright side at least you got a spare bush in case the one you needed goes tits up .! This cars gonna be really special and smooth all these adjustments and fine tweaks your making 👍
I used the polybush on the other side just have the spare sleave which may well come in handy one day. It's getting better all the time now, driving well.
Pattern parts lol
Crazy. Are Ford ones still available?
@@Squintanditsmint no. It’s hit and miss on pattern ones
That's what I thought. I expect nos would be worth a few quid then.
The powerflex bushes are designed to fit the genuine arms and don’t work with patern ones
Yes. I had no idea the pattern part would need a different bush, that's just daft. All sorted now though. Cheers
Wow. I was shocked to see the races drop out until you found they were the wrong ones. I've only hired out work on my cars twice in my life. Once worked out well. The other was a nightmare. I don't like if I screw up but to pay someone else to screw up would set me off... After decades of working with grease and paint thinner, my hands cracked and bled a lot. I found a 15mil glove that is very tough. I can get 1 - 3 days out of a pair and no more cracking or bleeding.
Yes, it was a big mess really. We were luck we finished the trip on the old ones. I only subbed it out because if time constraints but lesson learned.
Give wise I've not had much luck. It's so hot out here they just fill with sweat.
Yes, well you do certainly get "warm" weather ther. I sweat too but it's better than the cracking and bleeding in my case
Yes, I know that you were in a crazy time crunch (silly boy). It is amazing that nothing got damaged.
I thought perhaps you wouldn't in a non tropical climate. Its ridiculous here though, they fill up like a water balloon bomb.
good job mate
Cheers, it's all work that should not have been needed by done and good now.
Nice work! Yes sir.. that looks good. It sure takes a lot of work and a lot of material to do a good job and of course experience makes a difference. Still, it seems like a never ending job. The highest I've ever used a machine to is 5000 grit. It took very little polish after that but I was pretty well tired of the process after that. I'm quite glad that I don't do body and paint for a living anymore. A small suggestion, if I may... next time drape the power cord over your shoulder so it doesn't drag across the paint and cause more work for you. You know, I didn't even have to squint to see that she's mint!
We are really pleased with it but you know in certain light and at certain angles you see stuff, squirls and micro scratches. Anyway it's more than acceptable for now, perhaps one day we re-visit but for now I have a dash to reconstruct. I do actually have a couple of 5000 pads but I decided not to use them. Tip accepted .... thanks my friend ❤️
Even the best jobs have flaws. My dad told me to never point out flaws in my work. Most people don't see the job in the same way you do since you watched it progress through all stages of development. You and the crew should be rightly proud of the outcome. Yup. Always stuff to do. Plus.. didn't you "borrow" some parts off of a certain red car???
Actually didn't end up using the parts so they will go back on it soon.
Sounds good to me 👌 playing catch on your vids 👍
Exhaust has always been one of those jobs I farmed out. Not any more though.
Happy belated New Year Gav ........she's looking mint mate !
Happy new year! Very pleased with how it's progressing now.
Good session and great timing as I'm about to begin a similar exercise and now have my A-into-G after seeing your update and learning the different foam colors and grades etc cheers
Don't forget to wash the panels and the mop between grades. Good luck.
Yes bro
gav you should be very proud of how this car is comming out pal i have finnaly started getting my 2.9 v6 4x4 glsi ready for the road again after being parked in my garage after 8yrs keep it up great vids
We are very proud mate. Started using it now, as you can expect it's further on than it is in the videos. The feedback we are getting gives us a constant grin. Glad you've got your finger out. Not sure if you're on Facebook or not but post and tag if you are, I'd live to see it. Cheers
Its my dream to do this one day ❤amaazing brother
Thanks ...... follow your dreams
Absolutely stunning Gav, it’s definitely worth the time colour sanding it’s hard work on the shoulders isn’t it , I have never used the da with the 2000 grade just wet n dry by hand but next time I have to do it I will have ago , great video mate she is stunning ❤️🍺🍺
Those Abralon pads really help make a consistent finish across the panel. I was told that white is physically a hard colour to polish as it sets like concrete because of the pigments. What you got to do is find a process that works for your particular colour and surface finish. It did come out well, we are well chuffed.
Wow, incredible shining result😎😎
Cheers, yes, worth the effort for sure.
hi looks like a mirror finish to me well done love your dedication to you project,,do you have a bottle return scheme,,lol👏👏
Thanks. This polishing lark is definitely another tricky skill but worth putting the days into. Didn't think it would take so long. Something coming with the bottles.
Henry wouldve been very proud if he could of produced a ford that shiny and orange peel free Gav ! Looks amazing on camera this end Im sure it looks even better in the flesh 👍 all I’ve done Is put a new gear knob on my sxxt box it was freezing so that ended right there lol , happy new year mate 🍻
Old Henry was more concerned with brush marks I think. It's funny I went to a car meet yesterday and I found myself looking hard at people's paint. Changing a gear knob is a major accomplishment compared to most, don't worry it'll happen, before long you'll find yourself fully emersed.
Cool vid
Thanks, it was a fun weekend
Good work everyone - that's what it all about well done
Cheers, it was a great weekend
Nice video, Gav! Gee... you are a celebrity there. Impressive. Looks like it was a fun time.
Lots of fun, cheers Joe, glad you enjoyed it.
Great vid guys enjoyed it
Cheers matey, it was lots of fun.
I have the odd splutter on my streetka it’s almost undetectable but sometimes I notice it on idle think I’ll change the plugs first you never know ! I’ve not done squat to it yet as it’s freezing cold and pissing down with rain and windy but in May maybe June I’ll look at it 🤣
Definitely wait till it's warm unless it breaks beforehand. Cause you could always teach daughter the joys of spanners. This had an erratic 'dum', hardly noticeable and only at idle.
Nice job! After I've been working on too many vehicles where you can't see the ground through the engine bay.. you have soooo much room in there. Clean looking engine. Wow. That plug was a surprise. You should have told the bird to quiet down earlier, since it listened to you when did. Well trained. ;) Happy New Year, Gav.
Bird only listens sometimes 🤣🤣🤣 Yes, we've the minimum of stuff in the engine bay, it's still an old car with a compact little engine in it. Happy New year buddy
