Z.Vex Seek Wah

Today I look at a vintage Z.Vex pedal, the Seek Wah. This is basically the love child of a wah pedal and a sequencer, allowing you to set 4, 6 or 8 independent notch filters in a sequence. This particular model is no longer made and has been replaced by a more complex pedal, the Super Seek Way. There is something interesting, however, in the older model's simplicity. Single Knob Fuzz Shootout - 17 Pedals, 1 Knob Each

The fuzz powered day of doom has arrived, as I demo 17 different single knob fuzz type pedals from 8 different manufacturers. I go through each one, starting from the knob at the lowest setting, move up to the middle setting, then max them out before adding in an octave pedal. Once I do that, I walk through them again quickly to get a more side-by-side comparison. A few notes, I tried to stay w...
Magic Tricks with Chords

Today I talk about some ways to view chord shapes as different chords, depending upon where you set your root. A Gsus2 is the same as a Dsus4? Well, that depends upon context. What I really am after is to get you thinking about fretboard and interval geometry while also letting go of some hangups over traditional chord shapes. Let me know your thoughts. Getting the Kowalski Dark Gene Red and Green models squeaky clean in this video - well, as clean as I can. Most folks play these for the over-driven sounds, but there are some really nice clean tones to be had, though with a little bit of work. Modes Part 3 - Relative Modes

Part 3 on my discussion of modes. This is probably the most conceptually difficult AND most common place where modes are introduced. Relative Modes. I genuinely think that relative modes will not make sense until you understand: - the major scale and the concept of how intervals work - parallel modes and the idea of applying transformations (sharpening and flattening) scale degrees - diatonic o...

This is an introduction to a recent acquisition, a 2009 Weber Sage Octave Mandolin, handmade in Montana by Bruce Weber, formerly of FlatIron and Gibson and currently at Montana Lutherie. This instrument is downed an octave down from a standard mandolin and has a similar scale length to a guitar. Altamira M30D Grande Bouche Gypsy Jazz Guitar

An introduction to my Altamira M30D D-hole / Grande Bouche Gypsy Jazz guitar. I bought this guitar when I wanted to learn some Django Reinhardt songs and began researching brands and options for a manouche guitar (I try to use this term rather than "gypsy" as the latter can have negative connotations for Romani, but in this case the phrase "gypsy jazz" is much more known). The Altamiras are a c...
rotovibe vs vibraclone - the rotating speaker pedal showdown
zhlédnutí 505Před 3 měsíci
I'm getting dizzy or seasick. Today I compare a Jim Dunlop JD4s Rotovibe with a TC Electronics Vibraclone. The former has a Wah-like rocker expression pedal, depth/intensity control and a switch between chorus and vibrato. The latter has a speed and drive/intensity settings plus a switch between vibrato and "chorale", which I read as chorus. Both are intended as rotating speaker (aka Leslie) ty...

I recently had my grandfather's violins restored. He died when I was six months old, in 1973, so I never really knew him. But I always knew about him. Ive never seen a black Matamp... Looks sick in black!
Just wait until the Dark Gene Plus comes out after summer. 2w, 2 channel, fx loop, red + green capability, more headroom. I think they’ll be priced around $800 US. I currently have the green version for a few years now.
Dang the oval hole actually seems more full and enjoyable to play..
Over the past several months, I have been playing the oval hole almost exclusively. It has a warmer sound that really grows on you, especially when playing solo and not in an ensemble.
I have the Red model and it’s great. I’m in Australia, and for Australian players, to buy it and ship it, the total cost was about $800AUD by the time it arrived in April 2024.
Any experience with the GT2 or the 1224? I'm wondering how they compare.
Unfortunately, I have not. But my experience with this amp tells me that they will be awesome at what they do.
@@TheMiddleAgedMusician-mc6xo Nice! Recently learned that the 1224 has been discontinued, which is too bad. Oh, well, will have to check out the used market or go for a GT1 or 2.
Hmmmm this seems to be what I'm looking for... but It's a pain to switch the unused amps in and out of standby mode. Way more affordable solution than the other switchers i've seen though. Thanks for the video... should have more views.
Splawn! Love Scott and his amps! I have a QR and a SR. So great!
I see a Dwarvenaut! I love my 2 Dwarvenaut 20s; wet/dry stereo, crushes! I mean 2 Matamps would be even crushier! But the Dwarvenauts, even at 20 watts bring the noise police to the door.
Yeah, great little amp. It really is its own thing.
Always nice to see another Clutch fan!
I have one of these. Mine is very loud for its size, and it also does great clean sounds and mild dirt.
I'm playing the red almost exclusively right now and - yeah - it can get pretty loud pretty quick. Kowalski actually called me last week after watching my "red clean sounds" video and said, "hey, remember you can pull out the gain 2 knob." Talk about great customer service!
Nice comparison!
Thanks - love these amps!
@@TheMiddleAgedMusician-mc6xothank YOU! Great tones from each!
Sounds good. I want to run my microcosm into it, love the microcosm but i dont love the built in reverb as it is a bit metallic
Can I ask what model of 10" speaker is used in this hiwatt? THANKS
For this demo, I used an Avatar 2x12 G212 Contemporary Open Back cabinet loaded with 2 Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. The cabinet I typically use was the Hiwatt 1x12 loaded with an Octapulse, but with the speaker switched out for a Fane Ascension F70.
@@TheMiddleAgedMusician-mc6xo Thanks do you know of any 10" speakers that are used with Hiwatt?
@@josephesposito3499 Hiwatt makes 4x10 bass cabs, loaded with Fanes. Most folks will associate Hiwatt with Fane speakers, particularly the ones from the late 60s-70s. The modern Fane Ascensions are good takes on that.
@@TheMiddleAgedMusician-mc6xo Thanks but I don't see any hiwatt cabinets with 10" speaker for guitar.
What software are you using?

Or 9th
Every breath you take comes to mind I think for chord reference..
Wouldn't it be a dual 5th..?..
Are you referring to the G D A chord? You are correct that G and D are a 5th apart, as are D and A. But from G's perspective as root, A is a 2 (Gsus2, where the third is swapped for 2) also represented as 9 (G9 with the 3 omitted).
I am saving for a GT1 right now, thank you this was very informative
Starting with extreme settings is not a good idea. Sounds terrible, sorry.
Constructive criticism is always welcome. Yeah, I definitely moved through the sweep too fast and didn't highlight the mid settings. I'll keep this in mind for my future videos. Thanks!
Thank you so much for providing additional content regarding both amps. Now I’m thinking I may need them both. They both have something different to offer and absolutely a great tip using an AB switch. I was not originally interested in the green but knowing it has more headroom it certainly sparks my interest. Once again thank you and I value your time. Rock on brother.
Another video for me? Thank you!
Excellent presentation. Thank you for sharing and I’m on to the next video.
As a YT viewer I didn’t care for your review of the red and I have no interest in the green plexi version. You failed to demonstrate the reds strengths as a clean machine and your review was simply a cranked up version of the overdrive channel without any finesse. Im pretty sure this particular version was not designed as a metal chugging machine. I watched your video in its entirety hoping to hear all the amps attributes but it didn’t happen. For future reference maybe indicate in your title what the content will be demonstrating so folks like me will look for the appropriate content. I’m very interested in the Dark Gene red mini and trying to decide from watching these videos if I should purchase one but honestly based on this review I would not waste my money. (I think Mr Kowalski deserves a better review of his product.) In all fairness I have watched some of your other videos and found them to be wonderful reviews unfortunately not this one. Entirely my opinion.
Good points, I'll try to do a followup video of both in terns of headroom and pedal platforms in the near future. I'd due for another video, so I'll put it on the short list. Thanks!
Thank you for listening and you are a righteous fella. I was not trying to be a dick and hope you understand. I’ll be looking forward to your updated content. Appreciate your kindness and value your time. Take care.
You left a mode out, the Swanky Modes from Tapeheads
Thank you for making this video for me, the only person who watches your videos 😂
Very interesting and informative.
I have a LOT of things bought as incentives rather than rewards! Sounds big, like a resonator.
Please work on the "ahs", I couldn't make it through the video, sorry. I don't mean to be picky or mean so I won't be offended if you delete this comment. Best wishes.
That is useful feedback. I tend to do this a bit, but I think the past week or so I have been a lot worse for a couple of reasons - well, really one reason. I am recovering from a recent illness so a) I am still struggling a bit with catching my breath, making it more difficult to speak longer sentences. I think that I'm putting "ah"s in there when trying to catch my breath. The other reason is b) it made my post-50 brain fog a bit worse, so sometimes I am losing words and thoughts. Anyway, sorry it made the video less enjoyable and again thanks for the feedback. Hopefully you'll give another of my videos a try later. In the meantime, I'll try to be more aware of the filler. Best wishes.

For a decade or so I hunted down one of those “Green Amp” clones from Seattle you were talking about. Mines not green, I’ve uploaded a clip I think but your story is decently accurate. Sad story too Basically things went sour between the two companies, and the Seattle guy, “Electric,” Got a fantastic amp tech named McNeece to build these high quality, point-to-point wired beasts. Eventually things also went sour between them and now to my knowledge, that’s it! Shame too, I’d spend a fortune at that shop if things were fully operational. I think I’ll end up with a GT1 one day too, thanks for the video !
Yeah, I had started my Matamp quest about 20 years ago, so getting the GT1 was definitely a high point for me. I had tried working with the guy in Seattle a bit when he was still importing, and then when he started building, but communications always seemed spotty. Anyway, glad you got your Electric - it is cool to have a back story on your amp. Also cool that you managed to get a matching cab. I'm not sure how many were made in purple.
@@TheMiddleAgedMusician-mc6xo haha thank you! I estimate maybe 5 or less in purple… which was my dream amp so I had to get this combo ASAP when I saw it. I also have the “Purple AMP” faceplate I’ll swap one day
Glad I watched this. I used to have the Rotovibe it's an okay phase shifter/vibrato, worlds away from a Leslie. Also a clear volume drop when used on stage. The Vibraclone is a bit closer because it has some flanger mixed in. decent little pedal.
I loved the TC Electronics Vibraclone in the shop but when I got home I was disappointed with how it sounded on my board so I shelved it. Just popped it back on and while it's not amazing, the ramping on the speed control is cool. An expression pedal input would make it so much better. Maybe I'll convert it into one in a wah enclosure for kicks :)
Good idea.
Could you post a photo/video of the inside of it?
They rivet the chassis together - I assume to disincline owners from doing just that. I'm thinking of doing a video on budget attenuators and amp switchers, so I'll probably pop it open for that.
@@TheMiddleAgedMusician-mc6xo cant wait for it.
Ah, a man after my own heart! But not my own wallet, unfortunately...
The JetCity's are only doom if you don't boost them with a tube-screamer. Once boosted you got tight enough response to palm-mute your balls off! Cheers, man. Cool video. The poweramp takes preamps very well. I still have it [JCA22h] and will die with it.
The guy that imported matamps and modded them and all's company is Electric Amps (also called Green Amps, White Amps, Purple Amps, and a few others as names), but he's caught a bad rep due to bad communication tactics and failure to deliver products.
I have heard this in the past. I honestly didn't know if he was still even doing business, especially once Matamp started shipping to the US.
I got mine 5-4-24...got put it to gether yesterday, and it sounded amazingly good...no complaints here. :P
Saw this video in my feed. Wth is Hovercraft? Im in! Subscribed
Basically modded Jet City amps
A couple of things are good antidotes to GAS for me: 1) Dave Ramsey's financial channel. I am constantly asking myself if I am where I want to be financially, and if more toys make sense. 2) Guy Michelmore is a successful composer. I am inspired by his rig which contains good stuff, but it doesn't look like he is driving a spaceship. I suffer from a lot of what I would call existential dread when I think about my finances. I find much more peace of mind in having more funds in savings or a brokerage account than I do inspiration in more gear. That doesn't mean I won't add functional capacity to my rig: Currently I want to add a drum controller, because I otherwise don't have drum pads on any of my devices. I won't be buying another guitar though, I already have 2. YMMV.
Thanks for this. Too many people equate price with quality. Yes, with acoustics, we are talking about the result of a craftsman's art. And tonewoods do affect the sound, as well as the appearance. But, even with that having been said, only the top material, thickness, etc, is critical...Ovation guitars, with fiberglass bodies & great tone, proved that back & sides material is meaningless. With electric guitars, it's a different story...especially since the things that make the most difference (setup/intonation/pickup height, change nut, string trees & saddles, caps & resisters, level/crown/polish frets & fret ends, etc) probably cost no more than $150 to accomplish all of that. Sure, some guitar bodies are made of exotic woods, but they don't sound better than Poplar, etc...and plenty of the prettiest expensive guitars get no more exotic than mahogany, which is not an endangered, expensive tonewood these days because there are multiple species of it growing around the world. In fact, highly figured maple costs more. Then there are wiring mods, involving a few dollars for switches &/or pots, and some knowledge/labor, which can get a dozen or more tones from a Strat and 21 (Jimmy Page mod) from a Les Paul. And then there are the programmable digital pedals & plug-in mini pre-amps, with IR-Cabs that can, effectively, eliminate the need for a dozen pedals and create the desired sound regardless of the amp or guitar that is plugged into it...for under $50. Sure, there are crappy imported tuners, strings & pickups...but there are also excellent examples that cost little more than the junk. I must laugh at some common misconceptions but: Full-size pots do NOT produce better tone than "dime-sized". If it were only by feel & performance, most people could not tell a good imported set of tuners from a US brand that costs 3-6 times as much. Proper string installation does NOT require locking tuners. Measuring the resistance of pickups mostly provides little valuable info to compare pickups, especially if they are of different types. The could have same same reading and sound entirely different. People bash Strat bridges with thin "blocks", yet no-one ever actually notes that they perform the same as "fat blocks". And, finally, comparing the power of two guitar's output at the same volume setting is insanity. Volume controls are there for a reason. What's the crime if you must increase volume of one set of pickups to get more output that a monster that blasts you with horrible tone, at a lower volume setting? On the other hand, if spending more money when it gets you to play, you can't argue with the price, even if the cheaper guitar sounds better...but ends up hanging on the wall. But, I feel sorry for such people.
Ovations really stood out for their ability to be plugged in and sound great back in the day where your only option was to put a sound hole mounted pickup on your guitar or mic it. That said, they still sound better / more full on the acoustic front if you compare an Ovation thin bodied guitar with other thin bodies. I've had a couple of their guitars and a mandolin over the years. One Ovation had Schiller tuners on them that said "Made in West Germany" - which gives indication of age (granted I owned it in the early 90s).
My experience is, things I bought in the late 80s that were good then, are still worth money, some boss pedals for example, I could sell for ok money. Other things I’ve bought along the way are worthless or already gone long ago, cheap mics, cheap amps, real to real tape recorders for example, samplers, all redundant. A money put like buying loads of CDs. So while I get what you’re saying re inspiration, buying into the ability of something to hold its value or gain, i believe is a good policy. Guitar wise, I have some valuable ones, and I have some cheaper mid range ones I use for everyday practicing. The latter have little value to resell, the good ones I could easily sell should unexpected bills arrive. So a $600 guitar will lose $600 value, where a $2000 fender or Gibson may lose a bit but not 100%. Lessens my hesitation at buying higher end guitars. But it’s not just high end either. Why buy a VOS Gibson when you can get a genuine 60s? The vos will lose a bit of value, the 60s won’t. In short, experience has shown me to buy decent and real stuff (of technology that won’t become redundant), it’s cheaper in the long run. But, I know, you weren’t necessarily talking about money investment.
Stave it off at the beginning. No secret hand signals here, I was indicating some effects settings to myself for posterity.
Corr!
I took the mariachi approach of learning the staple instruments in the genres I listen to: guitar, bass, drums, keys, voice, and harmonica.
Super helpful Thank you!! looking forward to the next part.
Thanks for this video. I've had the red for about three years and had a lot of fun with it. I almost never use the high gain mode, just the clean mode pushed into some good tube break up. The only downside from me is that it kind of sounds small compared to my other amps, even at the same volume and through the same speaker cab. I don't know if you would say it has less dynamic range or frequency response, or what.
I think that is going to be inevitable due to transformer size. For recording, I think that this is less of an issue, as there are ways to compensate for that, but in the room you will feel that. Perhaps if Kowalski put a resonance control on these it would help.
One thing that Kowalski told me was that in clean mode, you remove the second preamp tube. I assume that this cuts out some harmonics and the richness of the sound a bit.
Using the preamp output, could you put this in front of a pedal then into the front of another amp?
I haven't tried that, but I would assume that it would work
I have two lexicon mpx 100s. Haven’t usd them for a while though.
good night-this is unreal drone!have a great day~

Good on/off demo, really shows the sweep of the treble as well as the harmonics of the higher gain settings. Cheers!👍
