Ultimate road test - New Kawasaki Ninja 500 vs the NC500 - Inverness to John O'Groats - Part 2

Day two and already 403 miles into our five day tour of Scotland's North Coast 500. This leg of the journey took us up from Dingwall to John O'Groats and we finished the day at Caithness View Lodges with a total mileage of 542 for the trip so far. We decided to do the NC500, anticlockwise because so many people had told us how boring the East Coast is and that if you do the West first, that it'...

We've done 125 miles on the Ninja 125, Now it's 500 miles on the new Kawasaki Ninja 500. That is as long as we don't count the extra 800 miles that we did to get to the start of the North Coast 500. The question is, do you really need a big adventure bike to go touring? There is only one way to find out and that is to put it to the test. Can the Ninja fight off a couple of Tigers? watch this vi...

We headed to Mallory Park to see some of our supported riders and see how expensive it is to go racing. You're wrong about this being the pinnacle of the 4 stroke 125's. Back in 1980 Honda had the CB125T. If memory serves me right they would rev to 17000 rpm and.produced around 17bhp. They would top out at around 80-85mph depending on the wind. They were the quickest 125 I ever came across.
The 125s have definitely come on a lot since i passed my test, nearly 4 decades ago. You guys don't know how lucy you are 😂😂
Ive owned my meteor two year's now, 21k on the clock and its never let me down. Great bikes
Informative and simple. Perfect video
I've not worn my helmet yet, can you advise in which direction is open and closed on the top vents. My helmet came with no instruction and the link in website for online instructions doesn't work . I am guessing it is "click toward the rear" to open vents?? Cheers in advance.
Cruz rode a GPZ 750 (non turbo)
5 and a half grand for a 125cc though!
It's far from over looked. It's a very popular bike and one of RE best sellers!!
I remember getting 85 mph on the clock once on my YZF-R125, couldn't believe it
I used to tour on a GS125
I would like to add to your review speaking as one that has owned one now for about 3 years. Bought my 2001Stellar Red Meteor 350 in August of 21. I currently have just a little over 11,000 trouble free miles on mine. When you were struggling to find something wrong with the bike you really couldn't find anything. (Except the cables when you lock the handlebars. lol) My one complaint is the halogen headlight. The first time I rode mine at night, I couldn't wait to get home. Really dim, I couldn't see anything. I fixed it by putting an engine guard on it and attaching a couple of LED lights to it. Really helped and I have no fear of driving at night now. Not to mention people see me coming and I haven't had anyone pull out in front of me since. I live in Texas, and you are right about the top speed. Not going to break any land speed records but I will be 68 in November, and I did all my fast motorcycle riding when I was younger. I had a Triumph 750 back in the 70's. I have the Tripper navigation on mine, and you can put in a destination and avoid highways and toll roads. I get on mine and ride the country roads. Over the years I have added a windshield, saddle bags, touring foot pegs, and just got a touring seat today. In conclusion my son who rides an Indian Scout 60 and I are planning a trip from here in North Texas to my home state of Iowa in October. About 800 miles one way. This is a great little cruiser, and I have no fear of making a long road trip with this bike. The tripper navigation will keep us off all the busy interstate highways and we can enjoy the less traveled roads. I agree with your review. The one statement I hear on almost all the CZcams video reviews is "when I ride this bike it puts a smile on my face". Smiling here in Texas.
My 125 is dead at the back of my house, bangor not moved under its own power in 18 years, not capable of getting it running it's just going to rot away
Sounds like a moped.
Really enjoyed watching this it took me back to my L plate days choosing a route to ride that wasn't too hilly or having to take into consideration which direction the wind was blowing 😉, cheers ❤️🇬🇧👍
Think my washing machine has more power than this chicken chaser.
I had a Suzuki Gamma 125 back in 1986 on an old C plate, wonderful memories of 90mph flat out on the Keynsham bypass and my skinny yoof body flat on the tank also, and that bike still had the restrictive washer in the exhaust, as a young lad I was lucky to own that bike bought from a main dealer in Bristol, I thought I was cock of the walk 😂but probably just a co@k fantastic memories
Cracking, simple, honest review. Thank you.
I used to have a TZR125 with a working YPVS valve It could easily go off the clock and keep up with RSTurbos up to 70 mph in the early 90
Decent trip then?
Hi, is this helmet ok with eyeglasses?
hiya mate great video, i wanna try doing some touring on my little honda cbr125r do you have a link to those panniers?
Thank you for the comparison! Question: what is the shell material on the K3? What is the benift going from plastic to fibre in terms of safety? Thanks!
Very good tutorial film. Thank you
Nothing wrong with a 500....except it is not a three or four cylinder. So, you are riding a 1960 BSA with cool bodywork, basically.
Hi Craig. I haven’t got a 500 BSA but I have got a 1960s Triumph 5ta, which is a 500 twin and it’s worlds away from this Kawasaki. It’s faster, it stops quicker, more reliable and it’s compatible with modern fuels. I love old bikes for what they are, but there is no comparison with this other than the number of cylinders it’s got. Thank you for watching my video and thanks for leaving me a comment 👍.
There is no limit to the size of bike you can use for long distance it is just going to take longer. Years ago, my mate went from North to South Wales and back in a weekend on a Garelli Tiger Cross 50cc moped. Probably averaged only 40mph but he did it.
Hi I’m unsure whether to buy the tractech eco 5 leather jacket or the s1 ce leather jacket. Could you give me any advice on the advantages of either one? Many thanks
My RS Aprilia 125 did 120 mph back in the day.
I want those clips
This is a good cost comparison but you’d need to add service costs insurance and road tax but am sure would still be cheaper then the other options Great work
How much was your bike
no it won't rev out as it has a speed limiter at 73,74 mph
No hills where I live, but for a dyke or two here in The Netherlands; so I appreciated seeing your hill climbing efforts. It's reassuring to know that torque saves the day. Speed is of little importance to me, so long as 100/110 km/h are possible. The J series 350 is receiving unanimous approval, so leaves only the choice of which version. Classic or Meteor; I'll try both out at the dealers. Cheers from the flatlands!
Very much enjoyed your review and the scenery.Got back into riding as a 70 yr old after a thirty year lay off so got myself a Meteor after riding much bigger bikes when I was younger .Just wanted something to potter around the backroads , country lanes ,commute to work which it’s ideal for.3,000 miles later still love it .Only major gripe is the rear suspension .The state of the roads where I live is so much worse than I remember and no matter how I adjust it bumps are a literal pain in the arse .Bought myself an inflatable seat pad which helps to cushion the ride.Interesting what you were saying about the cables.Mine were too tight , initially couldn’t full lock right without revving the engine !
Es Ist Egal was du Fährst!!!, Hauptsache ist,!! das du Fährst🤟👍👍👍, Alle Mann die ne Eierschale auf dem Kopf haben sind Brüder💋
Do you have to remove all of those clips? I thought it was unclip the visor then pop in the new one
What about the inside of the visor, any tips?
You can use a coin to unscrew.
This ninja is a great little 125 god damn👍🏽
i think hes sponsored by rst
I liked the helmet until you showed that it has a visor that locks shut. That a “no go” for me.
Got one myself, cracking little bike with a soul
Hi Geoff. I couldn’t agree more. Fantastic bike 👍
Hi can you tell me if the commander 2 visor will fit the commander helmet? I want the blue iridium visor but it only seems to be for the commander 2. Thanks in advance. Great video too
Hi Smokeyonesix. Airoh have actually increased the size of the Visor on the Commander 2 and with the new Dual Axis mechanism, it is actually a very different visor. Unfortunately it won't fit the old commander but you are able to get a dark tint visor for those helmets. Thank you for watching our video and thanks for leaving me a comment. 👍
a great review and thanks for that. I started with the Meteor 350 and loved it. I now that the super Meteor 650 and love that too. The only reason I upgraded was the fact that here is Australia riding on motorways cant be avoided when travelling huge distances and the 650 is better for that.
We have the same issue in the western U.S. For example, to get from Reno, NV to the next town 35 mi. east and avoid the interstate completely, you need to go 60 mi. on a northern route or 80 miles on a southern one. An odyssey on a 90, an adventure on a 125 and a cautious day trip on the Meteor.
Hi Chris. I can imagine there are some huge distances you can travel in Australia and that would definitely be better on the 650. I haven't had a go on a 650 yet but I can imagine that it is just as comfortable as the 350. It is great to hear feed back from owners of these bikes, they definitely have a very strong following. Thank you for watching my video and thanks for leaving me a comment 👍
Hi Mark. We have lots of old road networks here in the UK, which are perfect for the 350. I am sure the 650 would be a much better bike for the U.S and it is probably still considered a small bike at that, over there. It is amazing to have you in the U.S and Chris in Australia leaving us comments on our video. It is very humbling and we are so appreciative of you both. Thank you for watching 👍
Your generation, what do you mean your generation? Either you're the youngest 55 year old I've ever seen or you're a late millennial talking about "O the things I've seen in my 34 years." which amounts to nothing.
Hi Mike. I definitely fall within the generation of the late 90's to early 2000 superbikes. I was 13 and reading Performance Bikes Magazine at School when the ZX7R was first release. Then by 2002, the year before the ZX7R went out of production, I was riding around on a 97 Triumph T595. If I was born in 1968, I would have been 29 when the ZX7R was released and 34 by the time it went out of production. Both generations cross over the 90's sports bike boom but at different ends of the era. I would have definitely enjoyed the earlier ZXR and FZR years though. Thank you for watching our video and thanks for leaving us a comment 👍
Was on that ride, bloody wet one! Fun day out tho
Hi Rich. Brilliant. Thank you for coming out on our ride out and we are really happy that you enjoyed it. Hopefully we'll see you again soon. Thanks 👍
100%!! Coming down from Teesside to do your ride outs is great fun, especially when Vida is leading the pack. 👍🏻👍🏻
That was brilliant phil captured the day perfectly. Nice job 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi CrazyLegs. Thank you. I really appreciate that. Looking forward to seeing you at the Wildbad Weekender. 👍
Great ride out. Forgot how cold it was until I watched this.
Hi TBFKA. Yes, I was concerned about how wet you were both getting on the ride over to the Yondermann. Not the best weather but it was a good day and I really appreciate you coming along regardless of the rain. Thank you 👍
How much coverage are you getting with that drop down sun visor? I'm in the market for an ADV helmet with a drop down sun visor but I've noticed on quite a few helmets the sun visors don't drop down far enough. They leave a large sun beam blasting you underneath the sun visor. It's a bit annoying and distracting.
You can still stick a finger through and scratch your cheek.😉 But a friend just mentioned that it’s much deeper than at his Shoei GT-Air 2.
@@Michbert0815 Good to hear!
Have one as a track bike , love it.
Ahhh, @@woefieart2288 . I know, I’ve seen your photos of it and it’s ace!! Huge appreciation of your artistic skill as well 👌. Phil, PaintNation/MyMoto
Good video but you still have to press the black arrow tab while you were getting the brass pin in position for the red dot. That’s the key.
Hi @@brandonlucas15 . You will only need to press the black switch in a second time if the brass peg doesn’t leave the channel at the same time as the side pods being released. Some mechanisms are a lot smoother than others and I have come across a few that need a second press to release the visor. Thank you for watching our video and thank you for leaving me a comment 👍
