Tim Minchin's brilliant & witty demolition of irrationality in all its many guises - with rolling text from me -all in the medium of a 9-minute beat poem. Audio from the QEH Dec 2008 show with kind permission from Tim Minchin.

Best of the Best Part 1
zhlédnutí 1,1KPřed 15 lety
All from my hospital ward, a sweded version of Top Gun - possibly the campest movie in history- but thoroughly enjoyable. Anyway here's my tribute- I was receiving treatment for leukaemia and living in hospital and this distracted from the pain a little. All edited on a powerbook G4 (it took ages) and shot with the props available (note oxygen mask) Continued in Part 2

    Brilliant. I can now see how to play these notes. I thought an explanation might be useful:- So taking one note as an example: G#. Marked as 8va (play a note an octave higher) and A.H. (Artificial Harmonic) (Tab: No 4 on 1st String). Bridget plays it using the Left hand to select fret 4, while the Right hand plays A.H. at an octave higher ie 4th fret above fret 12 ie fret 16. NB. This score is available in "The Classical Guitar Compendium" by Bridget Mermikedes

    It took some time before I became comfortable with it, but now I just, can't picture any nonense anymore. If asked, while actually being serious, I'll say that I am happy being a nothing. I don't need no person to tell me our lives are worth anything. I need to be able to live, have a troubled life, and be rewarded somehow during it. Hopefully, when I die, I die content. If there IS more after it, well, they can tell me then,- I don't deny God if he himself says he exist.

      MrEFC2009 what? He’s saying the opposite. Storm said we should turn to “natural remedies” like herbs cuz she’s a hippie and Tim Minchin is like medicine and “natural remedies” are the same thing - like Aspirin - which is made from plants

    @jamesm5534 Před 12 lety

    So um, i am at the present time partaking in my final year of high school, and while im no 'wizz' per-say at school I cant tell that your argument is structurally and logically irrelevant. Structurally; As you referred to 'Storm earlier in your argument you should be saying "Storm says, 'science is just how we're trained to look at reality" not "Tim says" Logically; "I am a tiny, insignificant, ignorant lump of carbon..." is in itself a statement allowing a claim to 'objectiveness." I win.

  • @J101191514
    @J101191514 Před 12 lety

    Disappointingly reactionary piece (although not without its funny bits) The pharmaceutical industry make drugs that are specifically designed to treat symptoms, not cause. They only want your money. They don't want to cure you. Because if you are cured, you don't give them any more money. Doctors are beholden to pharmaceutical companies too so this affects their prescriptions. Sorry, Tim. You have a bit of research to do.

    :) Sorry, no offense, only pure logic, because as I see, you still respect logic. "You can't be a skeptic and believe in god at the same time." Tim Minchin said this, too. (maybe not exact words, it was said during an interview) And this is true. You can't say that you don't believe in the green aliens, but this God thing is different. Or you can say, but it is illogical. But true, I have no problem with your beliefs, so don't take this as an offence. (I was raised as chatolic and I don't mind.)

    • @olliedylan1381

    • @olliedylan1381
      @olliedylan1381 Před 5 lety

      But he’s right. How can you be a skeptic and believe in God? If you’re a skeptic you need evidence to believe in a cause. Where is your evidence that God exists? The Bible? For all you know, I could have written it.

  • @thatshowlifeis
    @thatshowlifeis Před 12 lety

    Sorry to all the high-school rationalists, but Sir Tim comes off worse in this exchange. Storm destroys her claim to epistemic knowledge early on with her "You can't know anything, knowledge is merely opinion”." So she might as well shut up. But when Tim says "...science is just how we're trained to look at reality" and "I am a tiny, insignificant, ignorant lump of carbon..." - he's destroyed his claim to objective knowledge, and also to objective morality (so cut back on the moralizing, Tim).
