7-Mud Mower Small Engine DIY power secrets- valve jobs!
I swapped a vertical to horizontal splash lube briggs back in 2010. I had bought a Cub Cadet 582 with a broken rod and used a very late, (I'm guessing around a 2002) vertical twin from a MTD lawn tractor. The MTD had very little use and was abandoned at the lawnmower shop I worked at sometime around 2005. I ended up selling the Cub to a guy I worked for at the time and he used it for about 6 years to cut his grass. Flash forward to 2021 and I ended up buying the Cub back. I know this is a long story, but I have been using the Cub up until this year when I started having serious blowby issues with one cylinder. Turns out the RH breather valve facing the flywheel came apart, (ie. the bakelite flapper broke). When I removed the breather the lifter valve spring area was HALF-FULL of oil! Turns out there was no way for the oil to return back down into the crankcase! There were two holes, but would only work in the vertical position not horizontal. I overlooked this when I assembled the engine. I have taken the engine apart and drilled two holes (one in each area) for the oil to go down. I hope to get the engine back together sometime next week. I was also getting a lot of smoke on startup, I hope this fixes the issue.
Yes sir that will definitely do it! Good catch!
Hi, I have a 9.9 hp I 2004 I want to upgrade to 15 hp, do you have a link to a Chinese page where they sell this carb ?
This is the same style I bought but not the same vendor, so check your measurements. Let me know the results! www.amazon.com/VIPIH-Carburetor-Replacement-Outboard-66M-14301-12-00/dp/B0CRQT858W/ref=sr_1_7?crid=1RHKW1VZC4ZG4&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.R7JcLnJsUlo_Wm6L_I4Blm0hwqS6yAax_po7v4NhqssGmCHulCe7do0w6AN3-J2R73jdIRpf30dodsruExXJ6kPRx-18HZVo6bA2_wHQ2CZAIOFBYiwoF9tIaCmVdV7Ey5nF7zqyWVQ8pnufK5brYjOlzwbfeg1yaf3KKvL8p0YOHcNNHzzxUhifbyjq1mHK1XW2vVZGHrYszWS_xy3uxsoVgNcNu3_hWIEnqJwO12WvfDGR0EhIq-e-pW7zS6nIU44iI6zknPUMylghaghNdh09SLc66PyRc3ken-RLRSc.jpGXi9RHYplu9fFME5MaVeby27vpaxL0YXYz4ZOiUyY&dib_tag=se&keywords=yamaha+f15+carb&qid=1716911166&sprefix=yamaha+f15+carb%2Caps%2C122&sr=8-7
That is a great setup, if I ever get around to redoing what I’ve got (bmx brake handle) I’ll try this. Thanks for the great information and video
when you gonna come ride with us?
@@captain_315 I’m hoping to be able to come to GER this fall or when the TTC is. But I don’t know. Depends on work, kids, etc. I’ve also got at least 3 boys with tractors now who wanna come too …
Been there done that use it to pull logs ..
Killer great info man!!! gonna apply it to my next build
trade ya for the 1486 good pieces of advice youve taught me😆
Awesome looking tractor thank you for the video
Great info, I have similar spring set up on the Towminator..
Awesome video dude I want to put a gas pedal on my gt6000 Sears Magnum I have one question to ask you do you know what a Sears Magnum gt6000 rear end oil would be my son got me this tractor so I'm putting Harbor Freight motor on it this is 13 horse to plow some snow or push some dirt thank you for the video
thanks for tuning in! Im not really sure what trans would be in a GT6000. If its a 633 style, plain old gear oil is fine.
Interesting!! I’m only one sub from 700!!!!!!!!!
Just subbed! This is awesome!
Thanks for joining in the fun!
Thanks for all the details! Great video.
This is a great series and wealth of knowledge your sharing captain, much appreciated! Quick question, do you prefer aluminum or cast iron intake manifolds for vertical shaft oppys? I have both. My thought is aluminum dissipates heat better and is easier to remove material from. Any pros for cast? Thanks!
Glad youre enjoying this! I dont have much experience with the vertical intakes, but can tell you the one piece cast iron ones have tiny passages and flow TERRIBLE. As for aluminum vs cast, the colder the intake is (within reason) the better, but go with flow over material by a long shot.
Captain, did you do any upgrades to the valve train? If you used different springs, what did you go with?
Yes sir, billet retainers and EC dual valve springs with the inner removed. Check with EC to be sure about fitment as its been a while haha.
@@captain_315 they don’t seem to be advertising one specifically for a model 42/46, but the do have the springs for an early model 28 AVS, which I think will fit?? I don’t know for sure though. Thought I’d ask someone who has been there! You wouldn’t happen to have a part number would you?
@@captain_315 also, any reason you removed the inners?
@@lafierte4087 They are the EC 270 springs, but you need to call to confirm and also get the correct retainers. They are listed as GX390 springs but are under the model 28-33 parts, pretty sure thats what I ran. We do a lot more off idle/low rpm stuff than flat out screaming, so I left the inners out to help the cam and lifters last. So far so good, year 3!
Captain if I’m planning on keeping it below 3800RPM do you think I can use the stock springs and retainers (maybe to exhaust -if I remember correctly those are the heavier ones)? EC doesn’t seem to make the billet retainers anymore. Or do you know if maybe I could use the EC springs with the stock retainers?
Your welcome my friend! It was great to finally meet you!
Likewise!!!!
Really great rig, held up to to a place that just abuses tractors. I will take a bent draglink and a lost spring eyelet as a win in my book!
Thanks Hot Lap! Just happy to be able to keep up with you guys now haha
Love this thing so much it’s a absolute animal, you went outside the box in almost every aspect and it really paid off!
Thanks buddy! Couldn't be happier with it
Nasty is a mean machine and when you’re on it you’re a whole different driver! When you hit the big flat rock on chadalack I was wondering if the N/As had you messed in the head or something, that was completely out of character for you!
Man I appreciate that!! So happy to be able to go where you guys go now. That flat rock was absolutely a ' dont think about it, just send it.' 😅
Great update! After watching the build videos it’s cool to know what works and what didn’t!
The experiments are half the fun, right? lol
Awesome update on nasty! I love it
Thank you my friend!!
Nasty was definitely a trail magnet even in the rip session I don't think I saw the front end come off the ground
Thanks bud, shes glued down!!
Seen some of the other guy's videos. Nasty was looking good! Always happy to see more of it in the future!
Thanks buddy!!
So I have a F9.9MSHC 4 stroke high thrust 6G9 group from 2004 and has the warm up solenoid on the top wax operation I believe OEM is discontinued and would wonder if I can use this one and if the solenoid simply mounts to the top of the ones you have on the table via the two screws on top? any direction is appreciated in advance. Cheers crowley and CPN also iboats are conflicting it is possible is carb would be different but work?
Wow I honestly have no idea, never messed with any with the solenoid. Sorry.
@@captain_315 No worries is not really a solenoid but a wax element when heated the pin closes of the choke circuit and its not failing but need a carb for it with one Thanks anyhow keep up the good videos
@@rexxx927 That is so cool, never heard of such a thing! We're never too old to learn. Thanks!
did you ever do the F9.9 F15 carb part 2?
I looked at the engines and the f15 seens to have larger cylinders or cc if i understand right, there is also quite bit of weight difrence. But from a cc to horse power calculator we should be able to get more out of the 9.9 :)
I'm not really experienced with outboards, just a lifelong engine guy. It appears the early 9.9s were 323cc, the later ones were 212 and the 15s were bigger. I have the earlier 323cc version, which was the same as the 15s. Hell, whatever it is, the little bugger woke up big time! lol
I want to build a 7 1/2 gauge train with one. Gas electric.
Thanks for sharing!!! Love it.
You got my attention I just subscribed to you I just got on Sears Magnum 6000 Motors got some scarring on the pistol walls I see you do some redoing the motors thank you for the video
Thanks for tuning in!
Looks awesome Cap'n315....
I do love the Massey Fergussen grills!! I have to find an opposed twin (vertical) the one with the pulley on the side not the bottom.....Like the one in Nasty....cut twice measure huh?
They are looking good buddy
Awesome machine, Captain!!! I'm a Wheelhorse nut and love all the work you do to those awesome machines. Hit & Miss....soooo COOL!!!!!!
Yes, me and my grandson have just like it ours is a 1967 Sear Serbin with the 10H.P Tecumseh we have the 3-piont hitch with ground plow and harrows. WE pulled it one time at the In Farmington Fair grandson took 1St. with it.
Wow those headers are wild, Nasty is absolutely unique. Looking forward to seeing it in action. Been thinking about getting a second build myself, one with a lot less stuff and work done to it so I can beat on it without worrying about it. Probably gonna go with a GT6000 or Sears with a 633 Great update video keep em coming we love it
thanks buddy!
Nice update! I'm just the opposite. Sears guy enjoying and loving a Wheel Horse. Great work as always!
Thanks buddy! Ol Bare is die hard Sears, but guess what hes been riding (and loving) lately? Horse 414-8😂
Torturing me with the long tubes and no sound demo👀 I got my 46 big bore block back for the shop, cylinders were honed for arc pistons so I can clearance everything. I also happened across a horizontal i/c pluss just need to save up cash for it😉
Thats gonna be awesome! Is it the true big bore block? SUPER hard to find!
Absolutely love it, i always love seeing a captain update!
Thanks buddy!
Appreciate the update ! Both machines are great but I’m pumped to see nasty out and about
Thanks buddy!
Header looks great!
Thanks!
Great update!! Nasty is looking awesome, can't wait to sit it in action......and well you know my thoughts on Sears.
Thanks Hotlap! I plan to treat the Sears with the same respect Sears guys give Wheel Horses. Very little.
So awesome to see your sears going! Looking forward to seeing it preform in person
Me too Junior!
Your doing one heck of a job on nasty! I can't wait to see it in person down at good-evening ranch!
Thanks!! Seeya there!
Love it brother can’t wait to ride
Thanks bubba!
Looking forward to meeting all you guys in October at ttc
I’ve never seen fiberglass done, man that’s actually pretty easy and cool!
Its actually fun to work with, just VERY messy.
Good stuff!
…”you don’t wanna grab a tool like your screwdriver to mix this stuff up”….😂 that’s usually the first thing a grab for when mixing stuff like this up 😂 aaannnddddd I have screwdrivers here and there with decades old Bondo, epoxy and resin on the shanks 😅 anyway, great video! Always enjoy watching!
Did you see what I used? Look close😂😂
Hahaha you used a screwdriver I didn’t even notice before 😄
Hahahaaaaaaa!
You survived the Lockdown! I hope you cleaned up all the empty beer cans! My better half doesn’t get my hobby either. I understand what you mean.
I do have quite the pull tab collection started hahaha
Love the video, nothing like a few days to yourself for shop/ garage time! Nasty is sure looking fine! Is the variator system staying in its stock form or are you gonna modify it any?
Thanks! Im keeping the variator for sure! I changed the clutch linkage to make the pedal travel smoother, narrowed up the pulleys so a 5/8 belt can be used, added an adjustable clutch spring mount, etc... fairly confident it'll work but its gonna take some tuning and adjustments.
looking good..love it
Good video buddy keep them coming
