You’re making me look at everything and use it as an antenna.

Now that's a fun antenna Mr MUD! In essence, you've created a squeaky ~variable capacitor~ (hat style) at the top of your antenna which ultimately provides greater efficiency and bandwidth for your shortened vertical than inductive base loading. By moving the hat up and down the rod, you're changing the measurable capacitance to ground within your antenna system. In addition to physically moving the hat, adjustable capacitance can also be obtained by increasing the surface area of the 'hat'. You can do this by increasing the number of capacitive elements in the hat, or expanding the width of those same elements. I've been playing with hats for awhile and strongly prefer them over inductive loading, The mechanical issues of a hat at the top of a telescoping whip is a challenge - one which Chameleon just hinted that it will resolve with a new lightweight whip hat coming soon. Now that will be fun to see 😀73 KJ6ER

Nice catch! Years ago, when I was living in Seattle, I was active in the radio hobby on shortwave. One afternoon I heard a ham calling on the radio, specifically from his aero radio. That got my attention immediately, so I recorded his QSO's sent him a reception report which to my surprise he sent his QSL card confirming my report, it's one of my favorite QSL cards in my collection.

If you are mobiling in either a Tacoma or Tundra equipped with the adjustable cleats that travel in the rails along the inside of the fender tops, you can simply drill into the “meat” of one of the clamps and secure a 3/8x24 standard antenna threaded female coupling and there’s an excellent insulated mounting base for lightweight mobile antennas such as Hamsticks. Been running such an arrangement for 12 years now in our Tacoma with a cleat located as far to the rear as possible in the inside of the left fender wall. I found the shield of the coax feed line under one of the two bolts on the inside of the fender just in front of the edge of the tailgate. Be sure to use a burring tool to get down to bright steel under the head of the bolt on the stanchion for good electrical contact. If you don’t want to drill into one of the four cleats that come with the truck, you can by single ones from your local Toyota parts department for about 12 bucks each. Chris AJ1G Stonington CT

BTW, technically WA7FLY broke the law when he used the 737's flight deck radio to make a ham radio contact in a non-emergency over the continental US. I'm retired from Boeing and we researched this specifically. The regulations say that the airborne mobile must be independent of the ship's (FAA certified) radio. Not only is he using one of the flight deck radios, it is sharing the same antenna with the second flight deck HF. Some pilots have argued that it is legal if they are flying a foreign certified airplane over international waters. But, I'm not sure about that. I think it's a bit of a grey area. That said, I'd still put it in the log book ! ;-) 73 DE W7OG
