🔴Stair Tread Repair, Pasty Making and Green soap on softwood floors. (REDUX)
This is the re-listed version of a film from 2017 with a new sound track and a bit of extra recent footage about green soap for cleaning and treating softwood floors.
Quick repair to the edge of a tread on a Georgian (Ca1800) stair case in an ancient house (ca1420). Also some advice on pasty making from Dad. The wood used for the staircase is unknown, possibly Lime, Horse Chestnut or Sycamore. The repair is made with oak which is what was available in the shed. The colour treatment of the finished repair will be with the same wood stain used previously, but I am just doing the wood work in this film. This is repair, not restoration. It follows nevertheless the International Principles for the Preservation of Historic Timber Buildings. Minimum removal of original wood. Strong enough to be a safe repair. Easily Reversible for more thorough restoration at a later date.
The second bonus material is concerning green soap, the Traditional Scandinavian floor cleaner and surface treatment.

I will have to check, it is not large, smaller than both these filmed here. It is not offset to any noticeable degree. The bevel is probably over 20 degrees, it is not extremely thin bladed. To be more accurate I would have to make several measurements. But I think they are still available from Jon Dahlmo. www.dahlmo.no/bile.html

    • @LucasRichardStephens

The two repairs were done in a day so not a difficult repair really. It was a short visit which I spent mostly doing the repair while others drank tea and such. The pasty was very delicious, so it was not exactly unpaid....? I don't remember why I didn't take out the step, it was a few years ago now. There was a lot of woodworm I remember, though not active at that time. Maybe I was afraid it would explode into dust if I did too much poking. It needs more complete restoration probably, at some point. Thanks for watching Awldune, best wishes to you and your kin!

Hi, I am thinking of buying Captain 263 with a front loader, however from what I heard from many diferent sources is that even though they offer 500kg front loader for this tractor it cannot handle such weight. I mean the loader itself could handle it on a bigger tractor but due to the small weight and frame strenght the tractor itself can lift a lot less than 500kg. Can you please confirm where is the truth? Thank you very much!

    • @LucasRichardStephens
      @LucasRichardStephens Před 3 měsíci

My loader lifts 250kg and it easily lifts the back of the tractor off the ground when lifting say a log of about that weight, even with 250kilos on the back three-point lifter. It seems well suited to the size and strength of the tractor, I would not want a stronger lifter. I would have to load the back end with 500 kilos to use a lifter of that strength and that is the maximum lifting power of the three point system. I like the margin of strength the 250kilo loader seems to give, it is well suited to the size of the tractor. I have used the lifter for some digging and log lifting and it has not bent or distorted, or broken the frame, even used at the limit of the strength of the lifter. But I don't have any experience of comparison, so I could be wrong.

I am not an expert on what has been found in the way of clamps, from archaeological digs in Scandinavia. I doubt there is much, if anything left from the period. Like many tools there are perhaps finds from other contemporary cultures that might help as pointers as to what might have been used. There was a great deal of international/regional shared knowledge even at that time. We do use clamps from the living tradition that are lower tech than those shown in this film. Some of the wooden clamps we use are shown in other films on my channel.

I really wish I had a good excuse to buy a small tractor like this, they look like so much fun. I don't own enough land for it to make sense.

You could hire one to get the fun bit, but not be stuck with it when the novelty wares off.

Making that sail warp is very daunting. A lot can go wrong! Obviously the wooden ship is amazing too 😁

I found this video enlightening with how you guys do your notches on the corners and that you speak English that makes it really easy to follow you and the specifics of your trade also I noticed the roads to be a little narrow I wouldn't drive to fast with on coming vehicles in a snow storm that's for sure but thanks again for sharing your video.

I am baised in my opinion of course; Norwegian saddle notch (more spesifically Raulands Laft) with full linescribe, is the most durable and weather-tight system. We have many buildings that are 300years+ and some that are over 700 years old. Takes about two years to master (if you already know how to build a house). It is really good to learn the system before you start on your project, because the lowest timbers are the most prone to damage, so since they are done first, your have to get it right. You just can't learn as you go, and hope to build a house that will be durable. Any technical solution that is less than 60 years in use should be considered experimental. Most modern systems have turned out to not work as well as expected. Here in Norway, there has been a total revival of the really ancient techniques, including use moss in the air pocket. And a deep understanding of timber and how to choose the right trees for the job. Good luck with your journey!

Beautiful your interpretation of the old song, beautiful and such minimalistic but real tools knives. I try to understand the need of the inhabitants of the Scandinavian peninsula to always have a knife with them.

The axe was a viking multitool, the tool of choice even in war. I.e. The Huscarls and the Varangian guard who where called axe-bearers in Greek ( Pelekyphoroi).

Fascinating watching your build but what did the Vikings use for F clamps in their day? Watching those clamps set and reset over and over day after day ... How did they manage to build so many ships? They all seem so totally different and built in such a way as to seem like they would never stay afloat. No fairing of the hull other than the bowed lines...No flat bottoms... What made them decide that that was a great design for a boat? For such long voyages with so little creature comforts or cargo hauling facility.

We use clamps you might see in the other films of this series, that are made of wood and iron and could resemble more the ones the Vikings might have used. Those wooden ones are not suitable for this particular job however, and though we could have made clamps just for this task, we didn't. As for the shape and method of construction, I think it came about by a series of developments of previous boats of the region. In the North of Norway, boats are still built that stem directly from this boat building tradition and were used extensively in the fishing industry right up until the 1960's, though now they are more used by enthusiasts. no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordlandsb%C3%A5t
