How to make your own bonsai tree from ordinary nursery stock.
In this video, we want to show how you can create a bonsai tree from an ordinary looking plant at a garden center. Robert travels to a garden center in our area to shop for trees. He picks up several ordinary nursery stocks and explains how he would upgrade one into a bonsai tree. This is just ONE of many ways you can create a bonsai from nursery stock. Keep in mind, different trees, artists, climates, and cultures will have different techniques. Watch and find out tree what Robert chooses and what he does with it!

    It’s interesting to see the difference between how a certified arborist would prune this versus a bonsai specialist. This looks cool but I think this will stress the tree out quite a bit due to the amount of branches and foliage that was removed. Maybe not though

    • @AsiaPacificGarden
      @AsiaPacificGarden Před 3 dny

      Arborists use different techniques than bonsai artists. We often get scolded by arborists and you can find them in these comments. We have been pruning big trees bonsai style (niwaki) for 40 years and we have damaged zero of them. We really don't remove a lot of the big branches. In fact, those are the ones we want to keep because it shows the structure. Defoliating a maple causes zero harm and we have removed up to 80% before.

    • @austinoliver7463
      @austinoliver7463 Před 3 dny

      @@AsiaPacificGarden that’s surprising to hear. We are taught to not remove more than 30% of the canopy at a time and return to prune the tree every 2 or 3 years to lessen the stress on the tree. And that’s based on a lot of research done since the 80’s up to now. Maybe ornamental trees can handle more but I know most trees react poorly to more than 30%. But arboriculture and tree sciences are almost a pseudoscience so I guess there will always be exceptions to rules. Also, I am from the tn. I am from Tennessee where we have harsh summers. If we remove too much of the outer canopy, the larger inner branches will not have protection from the sun and get scorched and permanently damaged. so there are many factors to consider when deciding how much to remove from a japanese maple

    • @AsiaPacificGarden
      @AsiaPacificGarden Před 3 dny

      @@austinoliver7463 You're not wrong. It IS often taught to not remove more than 30%, but it's taught this way because 30% can be applied to EVERY tree. Would we apply the techniques shown in this video to a black pine or a red pine? Absolutely not. But for a maple? 100% safe. Certain trees can deviate outside of this 30% rule. We will continue to do updates on this tree to show that the tree is healthy and that our technique is safe. One of our more drastic pruning video where we trimmed back close to 80% of a maple has been done this way every year for 15 years now. Super healthy.

    The house I moved into has an established Japanese maple that looks like it is never really been pruned. I have no idea how to start shaping up the beautiful tree. This is the first video of yours I have watched, and if I’m understanding you correctly, you started pruning at the ends of the branches, removing the middle of the three. Is that what you did for the whole of the tree?

    • @AsiaPacificGarden
      @AsiaPacificGarden Před 5 dny

      @@robinmoore7202 yes, that is correct. But like Robert said in the video, clip back the three from further back and not a little bit at a time from the tip, because that'll take forever.
