3:00 so in 1899 they predicted we can put information directly into our brain. Only to have a billionaire predicting it again "for years to come".

They had advanced imaginations, but the innovations they foresaw were depicted as being delivered by late-1800s technologies. Whale-powered underwater activities - conceived in a time where an animal (horse) was still the primary driver of land transport
Imagine if you brought the Victorians back to see the modern world would it be interesting for them
It seems that, so often, when theorizing about the near future, people's first prediction is flying cars. Ask anyone on the street; "What do you think life will be like 50 years from now, in the year 2074?", and many will say that we will have flying cars. This is evident in many sci-fi movies set in the future and with these paintings (though they don't have flying "cars," people do still have personal flying machines). For instance, in the movie Back to the Future 2 (1989), they predicted that, in the year 2015, we would have flying cars; this, of course, was proven false. So, I am making a prediction: we will NEVER have flying cars.
These are the issues we face when we try to predict the future. Some predictions are correct, but we see them with our current fashion in mind. Those people back then thought that we would have automatic instruments, but we don't need them, we have the internet. The clothes are also different. They didn't know our fashion.
Music used to be about 'sticking it to the Man', and offending the establishment. It was about rebellion. 50's Rock n' Roll, 60's Garage, Psychedelic, Mod, 70's Glam Rock, Punk, New Wave, Disco, 80's New Romantics, Goth, Acid House, 90's Various Dance, Brit Pop. Even the early 00's had that 'pop punk' thing going on. Music now is all about being inoffensive, sugar coated, background music that people listen to while tidying the house, or driving from 'A' to 'B'. It's not composed to be sat down and listened to and analysed. It's like everything else made today - disposable. There's still great music out there being made, but it's unknown to the masses and will never be picked up by the radio listeners, as it has to be listened to.
I really hope that the mine was disarmed before the boy sat down on it.
As a 26 year old, I wish I had gotten to see life through this lens. The amount of opportunity and community that has been lost I believe through the technological “advancement” of the internet is so sad. It’s done so much harm to our psyches. We weren’t built to handle this endless amount of information and connectivity . It has its pros but so many cons. And economically everywhere is just the result of extreme lack of forethought and future planning for equality, years of greedy corporations and people who only care about themselves now they own all the money and us 99% get to complain about it to our algorithms and nothing changes. I hope I can buy a house one day but my rent goes up faster than our wages and I’d like to have a child yet my friends pay as much as their rent costs for childcare.
Hi Emma. You’ve put that very well indeed and I agree with you. You have headwinds against you that previous generations did not have and, to me, it seems so unfair. Don’t lose hope though, you’ll get there in the end and I wish you all the very best for a happy and prosperous future. Tez.
Imagination on steroids !! 😂
Very interesting. Imagination is the strength of human intellect. Thank you vry much wonderful video
What a great video!! Amazing that you’d just started your channel when you did this. Super well done!
Thanks Annie! I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to reply to this … sometimes I get a bit confused as to where a comment has landed and I can’t always find it again 🙈. It’s always so nice to read your comments, I’m very grateful to you. (And off-topic you made such a great point yesterday about the ‘Ben Franklin Effect!’). Thanks as always, Tez
@@verynearlyinteresting ❤️ YT makes conversations nearly impossible. You’re doing a great job! And thanks!
Even just 30 years ago we imagined to have a lot of cool things like flying cars and hover boards. No flying cars is understandable but can we at least get a hoverboard?
We could have progressed beyond these pics without the world wars
Brilliant stuff Tez. As a person with an interest in photography and History I found this video (forgive me ) Extremely interesting!
Hi John! Thanks so much as always for your lovely comment. I’m really pleased you found it interesting. Tez 😊
Another great video Tez, one of your best yet IMO, I too love old photographs, they provide a fascinating, if at times slightly eerie, glimpse into our past. More please!!!!
Hi Keith. That’s a good idea, I’ll definitely do another one at some point then. I’m glad you enjoyed it and, as always, thanks for your comment. Tez 😊

That’s nice of you to say, thank you. Tez
This narrator lacks imagination. That scene with the "chefs" in the kitchen with the machinery that "looks like a lab" was predicting processed food, which most food actually is these days. But more specifically, it reminded me of a Frostry machine at Wendy's. 😆 And the "rolling house" reminded me of those double decker tourist busses. And did police riot shields even exist at all in 1899? The fact that they predicted that along with police on motorcycles is pretty accurate. And the radium in the fireplace literally predicted nuclear power heating homes. That one was pretty spot on. This was literally four decades before nuclear fission was even a thing. Personally, I would've given at least partical credit to the barber scene for kinda-sorta-almost predicting electric clippers. 😆 Electric skateboards absolutely do exist. As do those one wheel things and segways which when looking at this through the eyes of 1899, the electric roller skates was also kinda predicting. But electric skateboards have been a thing probably since before 2000, so that one was definitely spot on. Also, the "aviation police" seem to be really out there and making traffic stops just like the road pirates of today. So while not necessarily pulling over flying cars, I seriously doubt the cops were pulling over horse and carriages so aggressively in 1899. Plus, they actually do use HELICOPTERS for a wide variety of policing, and especially for tracking high speed chases. So that one gets more than partial credit, it's actually pretty spot on.
Maybe I was a bit too harsh then 🙈😫
Thank you so much for these pictures. I look forward to seeing others. We are so lucky to live in a time where we don't have to guess what things looked like over 100 years ago.
Thank you … and you can be sure I’ll make others like it in the future as they really are fun to do. Thank you again, Tez
Speech to text technology existed before 2000 and Roomba was released in 2002.
It doesn’t make them like you more it just makes them more comfortable and relative to you
You can combat the anchor bias by imagining for yourself the opposite anchor.
If we had ai many of this would happen but every year people get more and more afraid of the future
I remember back in the early 1990s I came across a book that was published in 1993 which was a compilation of essays written at the 1893 World's Fair. At the World's Fair, they put out a question to various people from many backgrounds like scientists, teachers, economists, etc. stating what will the world be like in 100 years from now (1993)? Just like this video, it was interesting reading how some essays were way off and others were spot on. I remember one essay stating the main mode of transportation in 1993 will be hot air balloons. Another essay actually described television in detail. I remember that essay stating people in 1993 will be able to sit in the comfort of their own home watching an opera displayed in a box.
I thoroughly enjoyed looking at these old photos. Please do this again. Soon.
Thank you. Tez
Read “Looking Backward” by Edward Bellamy if you like an incredibly accurate set of predictions from that era. Plus it’s a great book

I always enjoy your videos but I found the music on this one to be much too loud and very irritating. Turning the volume down to where I found it tolerable made your narration almost inaudible.
Ok noted, sorry about that. Tez
