It's ironic that nine years on, Jim Irsay is STILL disgracing himself. He's right up there w/ Jerry Jones for being just a terrible excuse for a human being.
Fran 🎉Bud coached the Winnipeg blue bombers not Edmonton ur awesome
Thank you. I audio taped Frans Last Game (audio only) with the vikes 1978. On cassette tape... on radio, Frans Last Game so says the tape. Hero...
Fran gives you a glimpse of what it was like to live through that horrible moment.
Bud Grant did everything a coach could do for the Vikings. Not his fault their Offensive Line from 1973-'76 (while very good at pass-blocking) was not good at run-blocking. It's wrong for Coach Grant to be criticized for those devastating Super Bowl losses (please pardon me for bringing the sore subject). The amount of age on those Viking teams, I know age did not stop QB Tarkenton from breaking and setting many passing records (particularly in 1975), however when looking at January 1974 &'75 for instance, 10 of the Vikings' 22 1st-stringers on offense & defense began their NFL careers in the early 1960s, well, sorry that's too much age. I am mentioning this to defend Coach Bud Grant who made the most out of what he had. I also don't think Vikings had a truly complete collection of pass-catching weapons until 1976, when so many of their other players were REALLY aging...and again, this was at a time when their Offensive Line was so good at pass-blocking but not even decent at run-blocking. I am just hearing and reading comments everywhere else on different videos criticizing Coach Bud Grant, so I am just typing all this to defend Coach Bud Grant. I still don't know if anyone has the slightest idea how incredible a coach he was. Bud Grant was the staple of the entire Minnesota organization and his forte was knowing personnel and utilizing it to its fullest. More than being a master strategist, he had a keen instinct for the game.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Respect sir!
Fran Tarkenton another man than I looked up to as a god as a child of 12yrs old and up what Fran did for me by sending me an autograph picture in 1978 I was on cloud nine , made a little boy with not much in his life so happy if you only knew when I got within 20yards of Fran I froze like a girl would do with Elvis because Fran coach Grant were my Elvis Thank You all for being so awesome if you only knew
Fran should have been on that NFL all-time top 10 QBs...
Mr Tarkenton you sir are my favorite player of all time the number 10 is my lucky number. I would love to meet you someday I’m from South Carolina have been a Vikings fan since 74 I was 5 years old you sir have always been my hero. Forgive me I love ya and never met ya. people should go watch that clip on you tube..... it was a great moment and i'm not even a viking fan great and very sad
Fran was great, but I was a Joe Kapp guy.
I want Frans helmet.
Yea u can be a scrambler but u gotta let a play develop..he would drop back for 1 sec then take off everytime...i actually felt sorry for his receivers
I remember him as a kid, seeing him scramble and passing the ball like an acrobat in the circus. Amazing athlete!!!
Tell'em Fran
Fran Tarkenton I have been a Minnesota Vikings fan since I was born in 1961. I started watching the Vikings when I was two years old. I hope I get to meet you someday and I hope that the present Minnesota Vikings team will invite you and Carl Eller, and Alan page and Jim Marshall and Paul Krause, and Chuck Foreman And all the surviving Minnesota Vikings that played in the playoffs and Super Bowls in the 1960s and 1970s so this team can learn from its mistakes and also to the most important of all coach Bud Grant I love all the Vikings from the 60s and 70s and even the early to mid 80s But after Bud Grant left, they were never the same again and after they built the Huberty Champa Metrodome in 1982 they have never been the same… I think the demise of the team was playing in a dome when they should’ve stayed outdoors like the Packers and the Bears I hope someday we get to meet. I have so much information to share with you. I love you like a brother and I hope you live over 100 years old because you are the best. Thank you for everything you taught me in life. Respectfully Submitted, JimmyUSAF 🇺🇸✈️🌎💜✝️🙏😇⭐️👍
This sounds so much like Stetson Bennett. They should make a movie about Stetson and Francis tarkenton they are so much alike
I have to 👍 agree. Almost the same height and weight
Fran is such a gentleman.
I met him when I was probably 8 or 9. I didn't realize who he was at the time. As I got older, I sure enjoyed watching him play though.
Fran, did Ray Nitschke ever catch you while Scrambling? I played golf with Ray in 1992 at the NMRI retailers meeting in Orlando, 2 months after Sam Walton passed away. We won the scramble and when met again that night to receive our awards, Ray Nitschke gave me a left shoulder chop shot that I remember to this day. Glad to have met and talk with Ray Nitschke for 18 holes of golf and dinner. He passed away in 1998 at age 61, way too young and way too early.
I was in the seventh grade and came down to study hall and was told by another student who happened to be a study hall supervisor that the President was killed. On Sunday went to Browns game playing the Cowboys and like Fran said the players going through the motions and the fans in the stands eerily silent.
What I remember about those Minnesota Vikings teams is they constantly beat the Detroit Lions. From 1968 the first meeting in 1974 the Vikings beat the Lions 13 straight times. Some games were blowouts; some games were close. The Vikings were like Kryptonite to the Lions.
I shot the remote for that segment back a zillion years ago. I remember his dad had a net in the garage and Tiger was hitting golf balls into the net. Who knew he would become so famous?
I remember watching this as a 12 year old when it aired. I didn't know a thing about golf but knew this kid was great. His mom did not look happy.

Bud was and is an awesome, classy guy, great coach. Too bad they don't make them like that any more.
Hopefully grants look alike koc can bring us a super 🏈 bowl ring and dedicated to bud Grant. Let's skol baby
Wood why add that S on his name? Father and mother did wrong. My opinion. 5-6-2022
Commissioner Rozelle's greatest rue was the assassination of President Kennedy. He still carried that major regret to his final days of his tenure as NFL Commissioner in which he should have canceled the games for that weekend of JFK's assassination. Great recollection Fran.
Fran the man. There was no one better.
I concur with you Fran. What Mr. Irsay failed to realize that he won a Superbowl with Peyton Manning while the other QBs after Johnny Unitas, didn't get any titles. Plus, he didn't realize that winning a SB title is not easy to do. Humbleness and class aren't the Irsays trademark. Robert Irsay was lucky to get the Baltimore Colts in a purchase trade with the late Carroll Rosenbloom in 1972. Rosenbloom owned the Rams till his death in 1979. Jim Irsay just didn't handle it gracefully.
Mr Tarkington. In my opinion by watching how you scrambled. You still made all those yards getting the ball to those receivers. you never gave up and I see that in your business field as you speak today. I listened to your old videos and it gives me motivation to do better for myself. Respect yourself.
Thank you Fran for looking into this matter. You really helped your team mates get Answer's. And I met Allen Page in My home town Minneapolis. Great man he also helped with the legal matters due to his education in the courts
Amen!!
A little over the top. But yeah Jim Irsay wanted more SBs with Peyton. And no his father didn't disgrace the game by moving the team to Indy. Teams do change cities. Namely the Browns moved to Baltimore. The Raiders, the Chargers, the Cardinals.
Thanks for the stories, Fran. Before now, the last one I heard you tell was on a conference call with Tarkenton Financial. Always enjoy them. Those were special times. I was a just a little kid growing up in MN but still remember all those teams vividly. Since you told the cold weather story again, I have to ask... do you think part of the reason for the lackluster performances in many of those Super Bowls had to do with not getting acclimated to hotter (and perhaps more humid) weather?
Wow! That’s the most powerful testimony I’ve ever heard on the matter.
Georgia “ drafted “ quarterbacks ??!!
Sir Francis, you’re still one of my favorite Giants of all time!
