Is your Stance Hindering your Ability to Stride in Cross Country Skiing?
Many skiers develop a stance that is too upright or too spread out when they diagonal stride. The key to a good stride is to keep your feet under your body so that you can balance on 1 ski at a time. This will allow you to ski faster and more efficiently. Our On Line Fast Track programme for either classic or skate skiing is a cost effective and personalized way to improve your skiing . Are you a lopsided cross country skier?
zhlédnutí 1,1KPřed 4 měsíci
I often see skiers who are not symmetric in my On Line Fast Track Ski programme and also in my in person lessons. This is not surprising since we might balance better on one foot than the other or be stronger poling on one side than the other. But in most xc ski techniques we want to be symmetrical and so we need to be aware of any imbalances and begin to corrent them. You can get more info abo...

Could Snowfeet help your Cross Country Ski Skating?
zhlédnutí 806Před 5 měsíci
Snowfeet are a short ski that might help cross country skiers learn to put down and balance on a flat ski and with timing of the one skate or V2 skate. Many skiers have a great deal of difficulty with both of these issues and as a learning tool these Snowfeet might be useful. They are slow which means that new skiers won't find themselves going too fast and their short length makes them less in...

The diagonal stride is the main technique that many recreational skiers use when they cross country ski. But in fact to stride well means getting good weight shift from ski to ski. Good video. When I learned the pole exercise for downhill, they taught me to hold the pole to somewhat face the direction of the mountain, which he is doing here. Nice analysis and demonstration! I think that one thing contributing to the spread-out stance is when beginners see those phony posed pictures of classic skiers with the back foot way out behind and up in the air (like 1960s racers). They don't realize that this is just an instant in the stride (perhaps exaggerated for dramatic effect), and end up concentrating on the position of the back foot. But their balance isn't good enough to get on one foot so they end up in that awkward position.

    A wise man once said "If you can run, you can ski" -- czcams.com/video/bNupVJ6cxRc/video.html Slowing it down is great fun, but I think it's not an entirely fair way of thinking about that as a way to avoid needing the athleticism to ski fast. You and Doug are clearly athletic people, with well-developed classic technique and probably good balance. For dopes like me, I find it easier to have good form while going fast (obviously not so fast that my form falls apart), since balance is easier when I don't have to spend much time on any ski at any time. I'm not the racing type, I just want to enjoy some fun track or go touring somewhere interesting, so I like to go slow, but I find that going slow with good weight transfer is harder from a technique perspective. It's a lot easier to ride a bike at 15mph than 1.5mph, and sometimes it's easier to ski at a faster pace. Thanks so much for yet another awesome video. I'm glad Doug is getting to get out there and have some fun while he heals, and wish him a full recovery

    • @k2nicol
      @k2nicol Před 5 měsíci

    You mentioned the shuffle while in track. I know we are supposed to avoid shuffling at all costs (because it limits our strides and can cause bad habits), but is there any particular scenario where shuffling is ok? I notice when Im in deeper ungroomed snow its very difficult to get a good kick because Im cutting through snow, so Im shuffling, but when I retrace that same path I cut Im able to get good kick and glide. So is shuffling permissible in this scenario?

    • @k2nicol
      @k2nicol Před 5 měsíci

      You are absolutely right...there are many times when a shuffle is about the only way to go...deep snow, cold snow with little glide, etc ...but it is good to have good weight shift in your tool kit so that you can stride well when you want and then shuffle when conditions dictate.

      @gridstop-or6cb Před 5 měsíci

      I find that when I can manage some float if my weight is split between skis it's nice to shuffle, but when the snow is so deep I'm really trudging, a decent amount of weight transfer can actually help. It's isn't going to be pretty like Keith striding in groomed track, but I can get the tiniest glide to help me cut the track and occasionally even have the striding (and not just the other parts of the tour) be fun.

    Good tip. Any comments regarding binding position and balance for classic style skis? For instance, will your center of gravity shift excessively forward if your bindings are "too forward"? Thanks.

      These are skate skis so I leave mine set at 0. For classic you certainly have the option of moving the binding forward for more grip and back for better glide. I sometimes play with this but often find not much difference.

      I would think on nordic swap lines or Facebook marketplace...but I have not tried using either for skis

    On gentler inclines I'm able to almost run up a hill but either way I often revert to shuffling vs striding and I really feel my triceps when poling. So I don't think I'm using my upper body correctly. But meanwhile I will try focussing on the early tempo change. Thanks!

      Early tempo change gives you a running start on the hill
