What do you think about PH D in Statistics? For someone has a Master's degree in applied statistics.
@@zarazara99 I can’t say I’m sorry I have neither my masters or my PHD .. though from my pov I think it can make sense if you are trying to stay in research or academia… otherwise I recommend people to get a job in industry

Hello , is getting a statistics and data science degree in bachelor is a good option ? My dauther is taking BS in statistics major in Mathematics it is okey shes 2nd year this coming school year.
I am a graduate of BS Math, and I were to reset my bachelor's degree, I would take Statistics. I'm in love with the math (even though I don't feel it loves me back) lol 🤣 Even for me, Math stats really was the pain-"est" in the neck 🙃
Seriously, I genuinely found Cal 3 much easier than probability. I had an A in both Cal 3 and linear algebra, but when I took probability, I found it messy. When I tried to take statistics, I was completely lost. I absolutely had no idea what I was doing in the statistics class. Statistics doesn't look like math to me. All of those notations are very overwhelming. How can I learn stats well???? 🤔 I haven't found the logic in stats yet. It's just not that straightforward as calculus and linear algebra. I don't even know how to start an assignment question. What should I do????
I am a 3rd year pure math major and next summer i will be applying for internships. Id like to work in stats. Do you have any advise for me? We have barely any stats background. Just 2 courses
What do you mean by “work in stats”? Is there a specific role you are after?
@@ChristianGardner Thanks for your reply! My wish is to work in biostatistics and do clinical trials, but I'll consider different tracks depending on the job openings.

I can absolutely relate to filtering through things trying to decipher what you want and what you can make a career out of. It's kind of why I ended up on your video; I'm doing it now. The older I get the more I wish I'd done the same earlier, so kudos to you for being a bit indecisive and taking the "try it and see" approach first!! My BA is in English, and the plan was to become a secondary teacher. I ended up being bumped out during my Master's by my health. If I can manage to get scholarships, taking a few stats classes sounds like it would be a joy. I took intro to stats my first year in college and LOVED it; so much so I've been tutoring for that class for the last six years. I love English and the art of it but stats undeniably is my more exciting subject to tutor. It's such a fun math!
I'm about to go to college in my first year of Statistics! I will be watching your channel throughout my college journey 🙏
I wish you the best of luck, let me know what questions you have!
@@ChristianGardner What is your experience? Do students tend to find math (non-statistics math) tougher than statistics OR do they tend to find statistics more difficult than math?
@@scholarlyanalyst7700 though you need a strong math background for many courses, I’d say students tend to find the theoretical math the hardest since it is not as concrete as some statistics courses
@@ChristianGardner THANK YOU! Very much the consensus answer I was looking for (that helps my decision!). For me at least, statistics is so much more concrete (hence intuitive) than pure math. HOWEVER...I am not sure if you are aware of this, but it seems as though many people in pure math HATE statistics and find it more difficult. That's puzzling to me! I assume there must be such a thing as having an aptitude for specifically probability and statistics (which I think I have?). Of course, I have an aptitude for math in general but seem to really hate pure math. It feels borderline philosophy and I seem to have trouble "latching on", for lack of a better phrase! We all (you, me, and everyone in both fields) possess above average aptitude for math in general. BUT...I think that can be further parsed into people who have a higher aptitude for pure math than they have for probability and statistics (I am not in that camp!) versus those who have a stronger aptitude for probability and statistics than they do for pure math (my camp!). Of course, I am no expert and am merely speculating. What do you think? Any analyses? Agree? Disagree? What do you have to say about my speculative analysis of varying aptitudes (in your experience with yourself and other people?).
@@scholarlyanalyst7700 probability specifically is a different beast altogether.. personally I don’t think it is fair to say that you fall into either camp, especially since if your statistics curriculum falls into more of the theoretical side!
finally got someone talking about stats.....good to see ur video
Thanks for watching!
My advice as a statistics undergraduate student is: take every possible math class you can! If you can take courses such as real analysis, linear algebra, measure theory, etc., absolutely go for it! At first glance, it may seem useless for the job market, but the point of taking those classes is not the content itself, but the ability to learn how to think! Trust me, if you take a real analysis course and really study the subject, your mind will never be the same! You will learn to think much better and organize your thoughts. You can really notice the evolution in your mind after enduring the challenge of studying really difficult math to the point that, afterward, you will have the confidence and ability to learn really complicated things on your own. This is an ability that you can only gain, in my opinion, by taking the time to learn advanced and abstract math.
Amen 🙏🏼
I really worried that whether my statistics major would help me in getting any kind of jobs in IT sections as I didn't get my majors from any high valued Universities...Aslo I didn't applied for the internships program n I am about to get my degree completed...So can you please suggest me some ways to get back to data analytics or data scientist in any way around as I really wish to get into this field...So please help me...😢
Look at adjacent roles as well, I started out in “software testing” (technically my role was called a “operations analyst”) … so don’t only look for jobs in DA or DS … you should have self projects that can Atleast show off some of the skills you’ve picked up in your studies
I really love research and statistics was the only math I really loved back in 10th grade and was the only math subject I got a high grade on in Senior High School (97 - I’m from the Philippines btw), but I’m really stupid at other areas of math. I’m kinda worried I’ll fall behind and I don’t really know what to do. Do you think I should self study pre calculus and basic calculus?
I’m not sure what you mean? Do you mean self study those two in place of taking courses in them?
@@ChristianGardner I haven’t started college yet, and since I’m quite dumb at math, do you think it’s a good idea to study pre and basic calculus before the start of classes?
What testing would you need R and Tableau for?
What do you mean by testing?

The US is doing exactly the same what they accuse China to do when it comes to data collection - just at a greater scale, collecting private information from users from all around the world - often violating their privacy laws. Imagine the rest of the world (>95% of all humanity) would ban social media and online platforms which belong to US based companies for exactly the same reason. CZcams / Google / X (Twitter) / Instagram / Facebook would immediately die out. The irony is pretty funny. And btw: TikTok is a 100% US company, not China. Their parent company is.
Hey bro i am doing my bachelor's degree in statistics so may i pursue a masters degree in data science or not pls tell me?
I can’t make that decision for your brother
After watching this, statistics doesn’t look like a good major at all. Statistician- Need higher education Financial analyst- Better suited for finance people Market researcher- Need background in finance Economist- Need advance degree plus not feasible with just a stat degree Database Administrator- More suitable for someone in CS. Now what are we left with? Data science, business analyst and software engineering. If someone wants to do data science and software engineering then why not just choose computer science that way you will have far more career prospects. So only good options after a stat degree is a business analyst? After watching few of your videos I can't seem to understand how you are so optimistic about this major while explaining the doomsday scenario.
These are not the only 10 jobs you can get, they were actually just 10 listed out on some career website so I ranked them. Data analyst, business analyst, ACTUARY, all great careers that a stats major can get with just an undergrad ..
You can literally get into almost anything with a statistics degree
Man, the intro to stats class I took sounds way more in depth. We did everything you mentioned plus frequency distributions, graphs, boxplots, scatterplots, histograms, central limit theorem, estimating population proportion and mean, inferences about two sample proportions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, basic probability, tests of correlation and regression, Z tables, T tables, R tables, coffee tables and every other friggin kind of tables. I had a pretty good teacher though. What's up professor Mehl!
We did all of this in our intro class tbh
@@ChristianGardner I always wondered what kinds of material would be taught in a higher division stats class. Do you have a video on this, or something similar?
@@My_trashtalking_account czcams.com/video/k-fPqMlP7QE/video.htmlsi=R-SlZj-FMC9rA4ZS
Which major is better suited for being a data scientist? Computer science or statistics?
Probably a combination of both but most likely a masters degree will be necessary
Hey! How old do you consider a statistics degree should be to be a good degree? Like how many years should a college have taught it in order for it to be considered a good degree
Oh man idk, I don’t think that matters but I’d check out the professors teaching the courses have a strong math background
This is actually a very basic applied stats curriculum. If you ever wanted to really dig into it and do research youd need real analysis, measure theory and a probability approach using it, maybe bayesian modeling, numerical analysis, differtial equations, a basic optimization sequence etc. If you could get through all that and retain decent amounts of it then youd be set. But without the theoretical backgrounds, what is even the point of doing stochastic processes? How do you know really what a markov chain and mcmc is? How do you really know when it is appropriate to deal with continuous time series data rather than discrete? It leaves too many holes, and consequently will leave you with a low ceiling. If you really want to make money and be a solid stats person you will almost certainly need a higher degree. Maybe in stats, operations research, computational math, something. A bachelor's usually isnt enough though. A bachelor's just isnt really enough unless youre coming out of stanford or MIT. Ive written publishable papers in undergrad on stats things (theory), and when you talk to people that really do the big lifting, its just a night and day difference. The gap there is so wide that you cant imagine. I mean dealing with copulas, multinomial logit choice models, information theory, game theory, multi goal objective functions, there really is so much more to stats than just applied stats. I just feel this video only included the basic procedual portions of stats and left out all of the really interesting higher level stuff. Like anyone can do anova and ARMA in python or R, but what can you quantify uncertainty on data where it isnt appropriate to leverage the CLT using frequtist approaches, or could you take the data and optimize processes/complex tasks with mutliple constraints? The subject is so much more than you had described.
He seems like such a nice and humble guy too! great to see and know, thanks!
Agreed! Adam was super cool! 😎 it was a pleasure to meet him
Just what I needed!!
I still recommend R over Python for Data Science. Machine Learning is an extension to Statistics so it is based on Statistics so You have to be fluent in Statistics so You must use Statistics so You must use R. Also, R by itself have tons of Machine Learning libraries, and for deep learning use an R interface.
There is way too much “must” in this comment, very successful and large companies and project have used both.. coming from an R guy myself
I learned this the hard way. I learned Machine Learning, then after several years I felt that I must go back and study Statistics properly.
Why R is a must? Because the Statistics you get in Python, is only the top of the Iceberg of the Statistics you get in R.
See guys ... for real data science, they look for Math and Statistics. They dont look for Python Scikit Learn TensorFlow code monkeys who spam useless Jupyter Notebooks.
I did get struck by lightning so i believe that stat.
