Snowy SUP Paddle
zhlédnutí 31Před 2 lety
Things I worried about on this paddle considering all the snow and freezing temps: falling in, walking down the steep hill without slipping on ice while carrying the board, ice forming on the deck pad and making it slippery, falling in, did I mention falling in? Even though I never fall in!😅 Paddle: Hippostick Triple G Board: 404 Jump Leash: MetaLeash PaddleZoo.com
Deception Pass Challenge
zhlédnutí 498Před 2 lety
The importance of a good race organizer was on full display yesterday in the infamously moody Deception Pass. Just minutes before the first wave of racers left the beach, it was so flat and windless I considered using my tiny flat water rudder over my weed rudder. By the time my wave started, the wind and waves had already picked up a lot and I made it just over a mile (which took forever) befo...
Another Puget Sound Downwinder

We got to play on the Sound with the wind gusting to 40mph yesterday. Unfortunately our canoes didn’t all make it out of this adventure unscathed A rogue gust of wind from an unexpected direction when we were loading up tossed mine and Patrick’s boats around a bit. I got some small dents and he got some small punctures to go with the dents 😢 These are the risks we take for downwind though.

Rufus Run Pt. 2
zhlédnutí 31Před 2 lety
As the song suggests, this section of the river is on “another level” and very different from the conditions in the Part 1 video posted yesterday. The early part of the run had nice slow rollers. This part had some fast moving bombs 💣
Rufus Run, Part 1
zhlédnutí 28Před 3 lety
The day after the Gorge Downwind Champs race, we drove east to where the Columbia River Gorge becomes less green and more desert-like. We paddled 13 miles and I felt like it was one of the best downwinders I’d ever done. It started off with nice rollers that were easy to connect and stay on while we all cruised along together. That’s the part of the run this video covers.

    How did the cutout pattern get onto the piece before carving?

    • @MKearney
      @MKearney Před 11 měsíci

      I just drew it on there by hand with a pencil! Dark enough lead will show up nicely. Any marks left behind get removed when sponging it clean.

    SPOCC! How do you do this race with no support? How to carry enough food/water? Do you stop to rest, or is it non-stop?

    • @MKearney
      @MKearney Před rokem

      You just have to bring everything with you on your paddle craft that you might need. Technically you can stop and go to stores or restaurants along the way but they are few and hard to get to. It just has to be available to everyone else. So I didn’t stop because I wanted to compete and have a faster time and challenge myself. But you have 48 hours to complete it so you can stop to rest or even camp along the way if you want. But lots of us just paddle straight through non stop. I brought several camelbak bladders of water strapped down and a few PBJ sandwiches and some bars/gels etc.

      @@MKearney Thanks for the reply. My teammate is going to do it next year and I was just looking for more info. I might give it a go as well. Looks like top finishers are like...12-14hrs. Which is insane, but not as long as I thought it would be. Not like I can do it that fast, but gives some perspective on it. I literally thought you paddled for 48hrs straight.

    What? No video of 20+ rescues performed by USCG during an event allowed to start in conditions that were unsafe?

    • @MKearney
      @MKearney Před 2 lety

      Actually that’s not what happened. A lot of bad reporting was done about this event and very little fact checking. 15-20 people were assisted and brought back to shore. They were not in immediate danger. Some I talked to just accepted the ride back rather than deal with the conditions. But all of the boats that helped, including the coast guard, were there before the event started. Thanks to the organizers being prepared just in case. As the race started, it was flat and windless. And it was called off as soon as the police boat (already present before hand) recommended it. And much of the assistance wasn’t by the USCG because they had big cutters present. It was by smaller zodiac boats and a jet ski and safety kayak paddlers and the police boat. This was all planned for and safe.

      @ElSantoLuchador Před rokem

      When they say "rescue" they don't mean the type of rescue you see on TV. They mean an assist back to shore. Anyone who started the race is well prepared to capsize and perform a self rescue. It's the weather and the massive waves that made it hard to pass. Since resources were already in place they simply assisted them back to shore. Death was not imminent for anyone at any point.
