I fell in love with jackboots a little over a year ago. I now have 3 pairs, two M39 and one now of the full-height M35's. (Nestof in Poland just recently put them out :) ). Bought my first pair while living in the Sierras in California, and hiked many mountain trails in them. Now I'm in West Yellowstone, Montana... I wear my jackboots for everyday use, I'm not a "reenactor" or anything. I love the tall, thick leather of the M35's, probably because I'm paranoid, lol... over the years, I've had close encounters with one timber rattler and two diamondbacks (one I almost stepped on barefoot), so the heavy leather is a comfort. And living in the mountains, the hobnails are wonderful on ice or that compacted snow you get on a well-use path.... I'm sure you know what I mean! Here's a letter I sent to the guys at Nestof (Nestof [dot] pl ).... I sent it before they arrived, and it only took a week from me ordering the boots until they arrive in Montana. And there was a weekend in there. I was shocked. Anyway, here's what I sent them. Some folks may like a few paragraphs down where I give some tips on walking in the things (yes, it's different. These aren't your daddy's Reeboks) "Hi Everyone! [Sorry for the English; I don't speak Polish and I don't trust machine translators] I really can't wait for this. I've been wanting taller boots, but the only available option was custom fitting, which was a bit expensive for me. If I like these M35's, and there are still some in stock in my size, expect another order :) This will be my third pair of jackboots from you. These boots are really the best I've ever owned, even with a few caveats. The hobnails have a tendency to fall out; I found some original 1940 surplus Wermacht hobnails, and I just fill the original hole with some leather glue and press the replacement in. I almost never lose one of those. Also, I had to have the heel irons replaced... I actually wore them out. Did I tell you I wear these for everyday use? I'm not a re-enactor. My first pairs were for stomping around in the forest in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, and now I stomp around in the forest in the Rockies in Montana. Anyway.... I found a great cobbler in Bozeman, Montana. Carter's Boots & Repair, [ cartersboots.com/ ] just west of Bozeman itself. These fellows had never even seen a jackboot before. I bought a pair of heel irons from At The Front [ www.atthefront.com/product-p/gbheeli.htm ], and they were a close (but not perfect) fit... and the guys at Carter's had them on in 20 minutes and only charged me $25 for the work. If any of your customers in Northwest America need some fixes done, I highly recommend them. The thing is, when they pulled the remains of the old broken heel-iron out, they found that the original ones were welded, not cast. The mounting flanges were welded to the loop of the actual iron, instead of the whole thing being cast as one piece. That was disappointing... but I'm not complaining! The boots are absolutely amazing for the price, even with the shipping charges. Replacing the irons when they break and a few hobnails is a small thing, compared to the quality of the workmanship from Fredericci and the great communication you at Nestof have with us customers. I look forward to many wonderful things in the mail from you in the future. :) Here's some advice for any other crazy people who wear these all the time.... When walking, try to lead with the ball of your foot, not the heel. Get in the habit of it. When your heel lands first, it's just a tiny bit of the heel-iron contacting the ground, and on certain surfaces, you'll slip. Smooth tiles, very large flagstones, things like that... be very careful. Rough concrete, cobblestones, the average asphalt pavement / sidewalk: No problem. On linoleum or wood floors, however, be careful. Set your foot straight down, and lift it straight up; don't shuffle your feet.... you can really damage the flooring with your hobnails. And no, they won't hurt carpeting at all. After a winter in the Sierra Nevada Mountains (at 5200', or 1600m elevation) and now another winter in Montana (6600 feet, or 2,030m elevation), I've walked on a lot of snow and ice in these things. And they are the best. The only thing I could think that would be better would be your Gebirgsjaeger boots, lol. [I'm saving up for them, you'll see, ha ha] Watch out for what we call 'black ice', ice that is perfectly smooth; you'll slip just like walking on smooth tiles. But if you slap the ball of your foot down, the hobnails will bite into the ice and you'll be fine walking on it... just take your time. Compacted snow, you know the kind: many people have walked the same path and it gets smooth on the surface? that regular snow boots slip on? Not a problem in jackboots. They bite right into it. If you follow the directions that Nestof gives, oil your boots well with linseed on the soles, and castor or mink on the uppers, followed by a good coat of lanolin (especially on the seams).... they're virtually waterproof. [no, you can't stand in a stream for half an hour.... but don't worry about stepping in slush]. Your heel irons WILL wear out, so be prepared to replace them. Find a good local cobbler who you trust, and be sure to get the right size irons (most cobblers won't just have them in stock, you'll have to get them yourself). Treat them well, and you'll be handing these boots down to your grandchildren. Another nice thing about them.... your European customers might not understand this... but between my jeans underneath and the thickness of the leather, I'm much less worried about rattlesnake bites when I'm "stomping around in the forest". Anyway, thanks for the amazing stuff. Dealing with your company makes me want to look at other Polish companies and products.... plus, I'm very conservative, and it seems that Poland is the last sane country in Europe, and the one former Eastern Bloc country that's figured out this whole "capitalism" thing. I love it, and it's good for both of us. Maybe I'll come visit someday, before the Lord takes me. If I do, I'll make a point of visiting you in Poznan. Some good skills there. If I can add some ideas? (some of which I was taught by an ex WSS veteran) When sewing - it is a VERY good idea to use a "sewing awl" - all but essential. It will make the hole for the thread bigger, but won't make a permanent hole in the leather. A lot of the holes in WW2 German leather items are made from BELOW - so for some projects, turn the item upside down to punch the holes - this gives a neater upper face, and a larger lower side, to make the buckle go in the hole easier. A lot of the leather fittings are also placed on the item "upside down" - with the better smooth (hair) face on the underside and the rough (flash) side facing up... Quite a lot of the leather parts would have been edge-dyed before assembly. It is also a good idea to treat the leather with mink oil or dubbing BEFORE assembly.
