Hoya. With OLL parity. Still can't beat my 36.26 from 2019. Messed up the first two solves so the average was ruined right away; this was solve 5.

I branched out from just Vancouver. Actually this was a while ago I just didn't get around to posting it until now. 1 was easy/standard, though I second-guessed myself and lost a few points. 2 seems like it wouldn't be too hard with more time, but was tough in 10s; it was crazy how close I ended up. 3 I recognized Hastings Park, though it's not super recognizable from this view/angle. 4 was stu...

I finally get a (\leq 5)-move scramble, and I mess it up. It's hard to tell, but if you go frame-by-frame, it looks like I did the last move (not fully, but more than half) and then it undid itself upon hitting the table. Which is consistent with what I remember experiencing. I have a bad habit in short events of not using as much inspection as I should. I knew the LL would be oriented, but it ...

I still haven't gotten a perfect game on 10s NMPZ (no move, pan, or zoom), but here are some noteworthy individual guesses, spliced together from different games. Mostly generic-looking places that I either recognized (to some degree of confidence) or was not sure about but somehow got - mostly the former. I didn't include 'easy' locations with landmarks or street signs (for the most part). A f...

Most of my solves at home are sub-8, with several sub-7s. Haven't gone over 10min in over a year - besides my official solves :( Here, I messed up center memo twice and had to restart. Then I forgot the first wing image for nearly 4 minutes and I kept messing up my fingers when trying to deduce it by elimination. Twice as long as my PB. Can't complain much though since I've done very few solves...

    I have a question, how did you learn 3 style in the beginning? How long did it take you to learn it and become comfortable with it? How would you suggest going learning it?

    • @krmatthews
      @krmatthews Před 10 měsíci

      First I stuck with my existing buffer UBR and made up my own algs. Then I eventually switched to UFR and chose algs based on other people's lists, some generated comms, and my personal preferences. Then I started edges and immediately switched to UF, using the same strategy as I did for UFR. I wasn't progressing very fast, so I think it took a year or two to fully switch and be comfortable. If I dedicated more time then it definitely could have gone much faster. I would recommend first getting used to some new finger tricks, in particular involving slice moves. Then switch to UF/UFR and pick algs from fast people's lists. If you don't practice the finger tricks before picking algs, you'll probably avoid a lot of good algs, which is bad in the long term. Then stop doing full solves, and just drill execution for a few months (use a program to generate memo or something). Then go back to doing full solves. Otherwise you'll probably keep some bad habits, and be too tempted to revert to your old method if you don't immediately know a case.

      Idk lol, I'm on linux so I'm stuck with Kdenlive as far as I know, and it's kinda buggy. These videos were filmed in the same quality as all my other videos (my phone only has one quality setting option.)

      I've gone through several review systems over the years and you've critiqued most of them lol I've tried multiple times to speed up the first pass but it always ends in disaster :(

    • @GrahamSiggins

      @@krmatthews I guess I'm mainly concerned about things such as how you do the third and final pass of 1-5 like less than 10 minutes into the attempt lol. Maybe I've told you this before, idr, but I think it would help a ton if you could trace and review faster for most of the first 3 passes of cubes 1-25 or so (1-30 if you wanna be more prepared for moving into the 40+ range) and then fit in a 4th and final bulk review of that whole pack of cubes. You essentially have very few reviews overall, and they are all really soon after the last time youve seen those cubes, including your final pass of each cube, which seems like a recipe for disaster imo. I'm not sure what your average accuracy is like and how well you typically recall each thing/if theres a pattern at all with which cubes you tend to forget, but doing a bulk review like I mentioned I feel could be super helpful in evening out how well you recall everything as well as just making the memo way stronger overall

    • @GrahamSiggins
      @GrahamSiggins Před rokem

      Also, in reference to the description where you say if you go faster on the first pass, the second pass is way too long -- my advice would be to just also rush the second pass. Like, don't worry about it if it doesnt feel like its sticking yet. Cus increasing speed on all these first three passes will easily make enough space for a 4th pass where I think you will feel a lot more confident with recall on everything. And I also thing it will make your recall during exec a lot more consistent too, most likely

    • @krmatthews
      @krmatthews Před rokem

      I used to have a 4th pass (first for all cubes, then just for the earlier half), then I removed it. I typically feel very confident on the the third pass, and usually my recall is pretty good. But when there are issues it's usually with the first 10 cubes - I agree the long gap between the final review and exec is a potential issue, especially with more cubes. I've tried extending the gap between reviews, but I just forget things and every pass takes a long time. If I go fast on the first pass, there are too many occurrences of me creating a slightly different memo the second pass. Either from cycle breaking differently, or switching an action to an object, or using a different anchor in the room, etc. I don't really have much motivation to try switching to a fast first-pass again after all the previous failures, and I think it would be frustrating and not fun and discourage me from practicing (even if it's potentially 'optimal' in the long-term). I also don't know whether I'll continue practicing regularly enough to get much beyond the 40-cube range :( too many other things going on in life. But thanks for the advice, I'll consider making some adjustments after my next competition.

    How do you know where every street is that fast?

    • @krmatthews
      @krmatthews Před rokem

      In general, I've visited a lot of Vancouver (and some of Richmond) on foot or with my bike. And spent time looking at online maps. In this particular video: 1) You can see the Blenheim street sign, and a long road like this beside a gold course is pretty unique (there are 3 golf courses in Vancouver). 2) Was not very fast. From the house numbers, it was by 33rd Ave, and there is nowhere else on 33rd where the buildings look like this. 3) The Stanley Park seawall and the Lions Gate Bridge are extremely recognizable. The diagonal path branching off from the bike path confirms the exact location. 4) Also not fast at all. As mentioned in the description, I deduced the sign must say 1ST AVE and then found the only part of that street which has that mix of building types. 5) The street names are visible so it's pretty easy to find on the map. I knew where Minoru was, so it was just a matter of checking the length for the cross-street, which I missed on the first pass.
