Making A Massive Oak Table - Breadboards Done Right
I was lucky enough to be able to make this oak table with breadboard ends for a buddy of mine. I think it turned out great.

      It's mainly for aesthetics but I suppose it adds a little bit of help with keeping those corners tight.

    Nice box...and congrats on engagement!! One question...with that type of hinge, you still had to cut a relief in the box so it would open? I am about to make a ring box similar to this and thought these hinges allowed it to open without having to cut a relief?

    • @TheWoodenHobbyist
      @TheWoodenHobbyist Před měsícem

      No relief was needed, I only found that out after the fact lol they’re great hinges!

      @@TheWoodenHobbyist - Thanks! I actually just completed the box last night. I made two simultaneously in case I messed one up and I'm glad I did because I learned those hinges are tricky. I first tried the hinges on scrap wood and found I had to get it within 2mm of the edge of the box so it would clear when opened but when I did the first box, my bit wandered about 1.5-2mm on one of the hinges which made it wonky when I opened it. So I made a jig to get it exact on the second one and drilled the holes perfectly...lesson learned! These hinges are tricky but quite awesome when you get it right. Congrats again!

    • @TheWoodenHobbyist
      @TheWoodenHobbyist Před měsícem

      I’ve read recently most finishes are safe for kids once cured. I’d say as long as they don’t frequently chew on the wood, they’re fine. Kids toys, utensils, and clothing all have some form of plastic or polyurethane. Depending on your needs and if it’s a concern, I’d recommend doing further research before making a decision.

    Beautiful! Any videos on that router flattening process? I don't think I've ever seen that before and I'm wondering where the pitfalls are. Why use a sled if that works??

    • @TheWoodenHobbyist
      @TheWoodenHobbyist Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks! Well, every router sled needs something flat to reference. In this case, the bulk portion of the table was flat enough to reference. No videos on the process but I just chucked a 2 inch flattening bit in, then screwed the router to a piece of plywood with a hole cut on the edge.

    • @jeffreyjbyron
      @jeffreyjbyron Před 3 měsíci

      @@TheWoodenHobbyist What do you reference to begin? Do you just find the flattest part of the table and go from there? Seems like no matter what you'd either star or end with a section than can't be routed this way, but maybe I'm not entirely understanding the geometry of it. Appreciate the reply and great video. I'm a fan!

    • @TheWoodenHobbyist
      @TheWoodenHobbyist Před 3 měsíci

      @@jeffreyjbyron so the linear panel was flattened before hand (not shown in video) and I set the flattening bit just barely touch the surface. I don’t know if I would consider it flattening the breadboards as much as I would consider it “bringing them to thickness” The ultimate goal was the bring the breadboards flush with the main, linear panel.

    • @jeffreyjbyron
      @jeffreyjbyron Před 3 měsíci

      @@TheWoodenHobbyist I see. I'm trying to figure out ways to flatten giant redwood slabs (we have many in northern CA) that don't require a HUGE sled. With your method, I believe if I was able to get a portion of the table flattened with a sled, I could finish it without needing to build anything new.
