Road-Running Tornadoes
If caught in a tornado while driving, vehicles are very risky. If the tornado is visible, far away, and traffic is light, drive at right angles to its path to escape. If extreme winds or debris hit, park safely out of traffic lanes, stay in the car with your seatbelt on, head down below windows, and cover your head. Seek shelter in a sturdy building or underground. If safe, lie in a low area away from the car, covering your head. Avoid sheltering under bridges due to traffic hazards and limited protection.

In June of 1981 we had an F2 tornado go through Minneapolis and its suburbs. I lived in Southwest Minneapolis where at the time all the neighborhood streets were lined with giant Elm trees on both sides. I remember sensing the sudden calm on a windy day so I got up and looked out our front window. All of a sudden the wind started to blow hard and I looked to my left and thought those Elm trees were almost blown over. I looked to my right and the Elms were almost blown over a well. By the time I looked left again the Elms were on the ground and then the ones on the right were down. I never actually saw one Elm blow over as I was looking the wrong way each time. We had hundreds of Elms blown down for blocks. We lived on a corner house and the trees in our yard survived with no house damage but ever tree starting across the street for blocks went down with many falling on houses. The only fatality happened just a few blocks away when a tree fell over on a 20 year old man.

I live in Southern Louisiana. We don't experience tornadoes but hurricanes are always a threat. At least we have time to prepare and evacuate if necessary. Hurricanes are so destructive as most people know. I've never experienced a tornado in my 60 yrs of living down South. It's my worse nightmare. Katrina did a real number on us all down here. And the surrounding states. 😢

Humans have the curiosity of cats and we all know how the saying goes...I do however want to point out Clem's video at 6:24 . This is a 70+ year old man who simply thought his house could stand a direct hit by a tornado. Said so himself. I guess he just did not understood that sometimes tornados get so wrapped up and spin so violently they can peel the skin from your bones and bore 2 feet channels into the ground...And you don't even really need to be hit by the vortex to have your home torn apart. The wind being pulled into the vortex and expelled on the back side is all it takes sometimes. Whatever the case is, he didn't even leave the top floor of his home. He barely got away from the window. He lost his wife who was on the first floor when this beast struck his home directly. This has to be the most harrowing tornado footage of all time. There is stupid and then there is just not well informed...I believe Clem falls into the latter category..

Those people filming from a vehicle is crazy! I have major ptsd from being in a tornado when I was 13 years old while sitting at a red light. The car was literally bouncing up and down then a piece of debris was thrown into the windshield. My friends mom was in shock and I was screaming “floor it”. She finally did and I watched the tornado tearing up the town through the back windshield as we drove away. It was sunny and beautiful on the other end of town which blew my mind. We picked my friend and her dad up from the Chinese restaurant (we went to another restaurant bc we don’t like Chinese) they didn’t believe us until they seen the car and all the police/emergency management. This was before iPhones but if I had one it would’ve been killer footage.

Just before a tornado hit (about a mile away), the air became not just quiet, but dead--lacking in any vitality--like it had no ozone. It felt really wrong, sick. The clouds on the horizon were sickly green, and the circulating clouds above me were reddish purple.

You're not gonna save any lives with this ''information'' , just tell people to keep a clear distance.

I would think if your house was destroyed you'd be able to go past 'freakin'. That last guy waited until the last second. I think it would be neat if someone had a little dugout with a plexiglass dome and record the thing going right over the top of them. Strong latches, of course. Low angle dome, like a sturdy contact lens.

A high quality very sensitive AM radio plus a shortwave radio with SSB for tuning regional HAM radio communications can provide a lot of interesting and important information when everything else locally is dead. That happened to my area during and after hurricane Laura. I was the only person with information in my community. FM radio has gone national and there was absolutely nothing on the one FM station I could still hear which is hard to believe!
